Vernal Equinox - Thiruvallikkeni

திருக்கோவிலின் கோபுரத்தின் உள்ளே கதிரவனின் கதிர்கள்

A solar equinox is a moment in time when the Sun crosses the Earth's equator, which is to say, appears directly above the equator, rather than north or south of the equator. Systematically observing the sunrise, people discovered that it occurs between two extreme locations at the horizon and eventually noted the midpoint between the two. Later it was realized that this happens on a day when the duration of the day and the night are practically equal and the word "equinox" comes from Latin aequus, meaning "equal", and nox, meaning "night".

The March equinox is the vernal equinox - the equinox on the Earth when the subsolar point appears to leave the Southern Hemisphere and cross the celestial equator, heading northward as seen from Earth

At Thiruvallikkeni during March closer to Equinox one can observe Sun set through the various levels of Gopuram.  During Ekadasi purappadu tried capturing this phenomenon and when I realized my folly, simply followed master photographer MAPs  (MA Parthasarathi)

How worried are you about your health ?  - do you know this word that describes illness ?  -    Throughout civilization, illness to body has been a constant worry for humans.  People fear not only diseases but also their susceptibility to future illness ! and that way life is never peaceful. 

The good news is that according to a study published in The Lancet, the average global life expectancy has increased by over 6.2 years between 1990 and 2021!.  A research team   from the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) at the University of Washington attributed this increase over the last twenty years to various factors including a reduction in fatalities caused by diarrhea, lower respiratory infections, diabetes, kidney diseases, stroke and ischemic heart disease.  

Yet it is not so peaceful !!  - even though the world seems to have moved on from the Covid-19 pandemic, the World Health Organization (WHO) continues to warn of an upcoming disease outbreak, most likely to be caused by an unknown pathogen, simply labelled ‘Disease X’. One of the reasons for this forecast is how viruses have been evolving. In the past two decades alone, corona viruses, which once caused only common cold, have led to three major outbreaks—SARS, MERS and Covid-19. There are also a number of drug-resistant pathogens, especially bacteria, which are cropping up across the world.  Another global research found that the link between these unfavourable social determinants of health variables and cardiovascular disease risk factors varied widely among people in different subgroups.  However, the team researchers said that an association does not mean that social determinants of health directly caused the risk factor.

This year for Insurers though 31.3.2024 fell on Sunday, it was directed to be a Working day -  officials were busy finalizing business figures, trying to improve their business performances. To navigate the intricacies of taxation and fiscal year-end responsibilities, finance teams and other teams try to  implement efficient processes, leverage technology, and engage in strategic planning for the upcoming year.

Close on the heals of Financial year closing, today at  Thiruvallikkeni it was Punguni Thiruvonam ~ last thiruvonam – i.e., next one in Chithirai will be Brahmothsavam and hence Sri Parthasarathi had periya mada veethi purappadu.  It was Sri Peyalwar’s moonram thiruvanthi in the goshti.

கிருஷ்ணாவதாரத்தில் தன்னை விழுங்கிக் கொல்லுமாறு கம்ஸனாலே ஏவப்பட்டு பெரியகுதிரை வடிவங்கொண்டு வந்த கேசியென்னும் அஸுரனை வாய்ப்பிளந்தொழித்த கண்ணபிரானே நரகத்தில் நின்றும் நம்மைக் காத்தருள்வனென்கிறார் பேயாழ்வார். 'அமஞ்சூழ்ந்து' – அமமாவது நோய், மலையும் வீசும்பும் காற்றும் நோவுபடும்படாக, எனவே இவைற்றைத் திரஸ்கரித்து மேலாக விளங்குகின்ற குதிரை என்றதாம். 'துரகம்' – வடசொல், வேகமாகச் செல்வது என்று காரணக் குறி. இமஞ்சூழ் மலையும் இருவிசும்பும் காற்றும்,

அமஞ்சூழ்ந்து  அறவிளங்கித் தோன்றும், - நமஞ்சூழ்

நரகத்து தம்மை நணுகாமல் காப்பான்,

துரகத்தை வாய்பிளந்தான் தொட்டு. 

பனியாலே சூழப்பட்டிருக்கிற வெள்ளிப்பனி  இமயமலையையும், பெரிய ஆகாயத்தையும், வாயுவையும், அமம் சூழ்ந்து (பருமனாலும் உயர்த்தியாலும் வேகத்தாலும்) திரஸ்கரித்து, தெள்ளத்தெளிவாக விளங்கி  கண்ணெதிரே வந்து தோன்றின, குதிரைவடிவு கொண்டு வந்த கேசியென்னுமசுரனை, திருக்கையால் பற்றி - அந்த அரக்கன் தன்  வாயைக் கிழிந்துப்போட்ட பெருமான் ஸ்ரீமன் நாராயணன் , நம்மை, யமனைத் தலைவனாகக்கொண்ட நரகத்திலே புகவொட்டாமல் ரக்ஷித்தருள்வன் ! 

Sri Peyalwar guides that our protector is Sriman Narayana.  With his bare hands, He killed the mighty  Rakshas in disguise of horse  Kesi.  He who protected the mountains, the skies, the winds and all else within Himself will surely protect us from the travails at hell.
