“Sunlight and Symmetry” – The Stone Colonnade of the Outer Prakaram!
In this beautiful sivasthalam around mid-noon,
there were none as doors had been closed and no darshan of deity – yet there
was divinity all around and this gave a stunning capture !!
Arulmigu Adi Kumbeswarar
Temple is a Paadal Petra Sthalam is closely associated
with the origin legend of Kumbakonam and the Mahamaham festival, it is both a
major pilgrimage destination and a landmark of South Indian temple
architecture. The temple is dedicated to
Lord Shiva as Adi Kumbeswarar, with Goddess Mangalambigai as the consort deity.
According to temple tradition, Shiva manifested here from the divine pot
(kumbha) containing the seeds of creation after the cosmic deluge, a legend
that is said to have given Kumbakonam its name. The temple traces its origins
to the Chola period and was later expanded by the Nayak rulers. Its towering
Dravidian-style gopurams, spacious corridors, and richly carved mandapams are
among its defining architectural features.
The devotional hymns
dedicated to Lord Kumbeswarar form a significant part of the Thevaram (the
first seven volumes of the Tirumurai) composed by the 7th-century saint poets
Thirugnanasambandar and Thirunavukkarasar (Appar) Pathigam: 3rd Thirumurai,
59th Pathigam : • Opening Verse: "Araviri Koadaniida..."
