Hindu temple dating back 1300 years unearthed in Pakistan

The Swat River  is a perennial river in the northern region of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Province, Pakistan. The river commences in the Kalam Valley of Swat Kohistan with the confluence of two main tributaries Ushu and Utrar (or Gabral) and runs downstream in a narrow gorge up to Baghdheri. The name Swat is derived from an old Sanskrit term, Suvāstu ("clear blue water"). This name of the river is attested in the Rigveda.

A Hindu temple, believed to have been constructed 1,300 years ago, has been discovered by Pakistani and Italian archaeological experts at a mountain in Swat district of northwest Pakistan.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, formerly known as the North-West Frontier Province (NWFP)  is one of the four provinces of Pakistan, located in the northwestern region of the country along the International border with Afghanistan. Peshawar  is the capital of the Pakistani province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and its largest city.   Peshawar is also the largest Pashtun-majority city in Pakistan Peshawar's recorded history dates back to at least 539 BCE, making it the oldest city in Pakistan and one of the oldest cities in South Asia.

As the center of the ancient Gandhara region, Peshawar became the capital of the Kushan Empire under the rule of Kanishka; and was home to the Kanishka stupa, which was among the tallest buildings in the ancient world.  Peshawar was then ruled by the Hephthalites, followed by the Hindu Shahis, before the arrival of Muslim empires. The city was an important trading centre during the Mughal era, before becoming part of the Afghan Durrani Empire in December 1747, and serving as the Afghan winter capital from 1776 until the capture of the city by the Sikh Empire in March 1823, who were then followed by the British in 1846.

Barikot is a town located in the middle course of Swat River in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province of Pakistan.  It is the entrance town to middle Swat valley.  Barikot is the ancient Bazira of Alexander the Great.  The Italian Archaeological Mission (renamed ISMEO), founded by Giuseppe Tucci has been excavating ruins of the ancient town of Bazira under Barikot since 1984. The expeditions in the 1980s and 90s discovered an Indo-Greek town from around the time of King Menander I in the 2nd century BC.   Beginning in 2011, an excavation in the south west corner of the site discovered several older settlements. One pre-Indo-Greek level was dated to the mid 3rd century BC or in the middle of the Mauryan era. Early Iron Age proto-urban layers were found, and dated to eleventh-eight centuries BC, archaeologists also found that the fortified urban settlement in Barikot (lower area and acropolis) was established around mid-first millennium BC.

The excavations have discovered a number of artifacts which document the daily life of the residents, including coins, pottery and weapons. Several large artifacts including, a large green-schist statue of Siddhartha Buddha riding his horse Kanthaka and a carving of a stupa with two lions, document the Buddhist history of Bazira.

A Hindu temple, believed to have been constructed 1,300 years ago, has been discovered by Pakistani and Italian archaeological experts at a mountain in Swat district of northwest Pakistan. The discovery was made during an excavation at Barikot Ghundai. Announcing the discovery on Thursday, Fazle Khaliq of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Department of Archaeology said that the temple discovered is of God Vishnu. It was built by the Hindus 1,300 years ago during the Hindu Shahi period, he said.

The Hindu Shahis or Kabul Shahis (850 1026 CE) was a Hindu dynasty that ruled the Kabul Valley (eastern Afghanistan), Gandhara (modern-day Pakistan), and present-day northwestern India. During their excavation, the archaeologists also found traces of cantonment and watchtowers near the temple site. The experts also found a water tank near the temple site which they believed used by the Hindus for bathing before worship. Khaliq said that the Swat district is home to thousand-year-old archaeology sites and the traces of the Hindu Shahi period have been found for the first time in the area. Dr Luka, the head of the Italian archaeological mission, said this the first temple of the Ghandhara civilisation discovered in the Swat district. Several worship places of Buddhism are also situated in the Swat district.
