Thiruvarangan Ula ~ Acharyar Pillai Ulagariyar and his efforts in saving Arangan

History is replete with poignant tales ~ nothing can be more heart-rending than the real story of Thiruvarangar and the devotees of Bhooloka Vaikundam running places to save the idol from Islamic invasion of 14^th century.  Thiruvarangan Ula ’ of Sri Venugopalan is a classic – when the invaders threaten to take over the beautiful holy island of Srirangam – the residents rise up to fight – they were not born fighters, neither had the physique but indomitable will to do everything for Thiruvarangar. The book chronicles the preparations, fight with Sultan’s maurading army sacrificing valuable lives, devadasis doing kainkaryam at Temple killing themselves ~ finally a small group of people deciding that Srirangam is no longer a safe place [not for themselves] but for the Perumal – protecting the moolavar by building wall and running away with the Num Perumal, Uthsava idol.

Sri Pillai Ulagariyar at Thiruvallikkeni

சிறுவயதில் படிக்கும்போதே நெகிழ்வித்த காவியம் ஸ்ரீவேணுகோபாலனின்  *திருவரங்கன் உலா * - உண்மை சம்பவத்தை உள்வாங்கி எழுதப்பட்டது.  பதினான்காம் நூற்றாண்டில் (1323 AD) டில்லி சுல்தான் உளுக்கான் (இன்னொரு பெயர் முகமது பின் துக்ளக்) ஒரு பெரிய படையை திரட்டிக்கொண்டு தென்னிந்தியாவை தாக்குகிறான்.  ஸ்ரீரங்கத்துக் கோவிலின் சொத்துக்களையும், செல்வங்களையும் கவர்ந்து,  திருவரங்கவாழ் மக்களுக்கு சொல்லொணா துயர் தருகிறான்.  ஸ்ரீரங்கம்வாசிகள், கோவிலில் இருக்கும் தேவதாசிகள், வேதாந்தாச்சார் மற்றும் பிள்ளை லோகாச்சாரியார் போன்றோர் பலர் சேர்ந்து அரங்கனை காப்பாற்ற பாடுபடுகின்றனர்.   உற்சவரின் அதி சௌந்தர்யமான திருமேனியை எடுத்துக் கொண்டு, பிள்ளை லோகாச்சாரியார்  சில வீரர்களுடன்,  சுல்தான் வீரர்கள் கண்களில் படாமல் ஸ்ரீரங்கத்திலிருந்து தப்பிக்கிறார். திருவரங்கன், ஸ்ரீரங்கத்திலிருந்து தொடங்கி அழகர் கோவில், மதுரை, எட்டயபுரம், ஆழ்வார் திருநகரி, நாகர்கோவில், திருவனந்தபுரம், கொல்லம், கோழிக்கோடு, சத்தியமங்கலம்  என சென்று, பின்னர் இருபது ஆண்டுகள் கழித்துக்  திருப்பதிக்கு செல்கிறார்.  உளுக்கான் படை மெதுவாக வலுவிழக்கிறது. விஜயநகர அரசாங்கம் பலம் பெற்று தென்னிந்தியாவை சுல்தான் ஆதிக்கத்திலிருந்து காப்பாற்றுகிறது. திருவரங்கன், திருப்பதியில் முப்பது ஆண்டுகள் பாதுகாப்பாக வைக்கப்பட்டு, பின்னர் ஸ்ரீரங்கம் திரும்புகிறார்.  50 ஆண்டுகள் திருவரங்கன் ஊரை விட்டு சென்ற துயர காவியமே 'திருவரங்கன் உலா'

Today (7.11.2016) is Aippasiyil Thiruvonam ~ a great commemorating the sarrumurai of Poigai Alwar and Acharyar ‘Pillai Ulagariyar’ – whose story I have tried to capsulate couple of times earlier.   For us Acharyars are most important – the Guru parampara emanated from the Holy feet of Sri Periya Perumal, Periya Pirattiar, Senai Muthalvar, Nammazhwar, Naathamunigal, Uyyakkondar, Manakkal Nambigal, Aalavanthar, Periya Nambi, Emperumaanar, Koorathazhwan, Mudaliandan, Embaar, Battar, Nanjeeyar, Nampillai,  Vadakku Thiruveethipillai, Pillai Logachariyar, Thiruvoimozhipillai, Maanavala Maamunigal.

Most of our preceptors lived peacefully extolling Emperuman, they have handed over to us treasure trove of bakthi literature – there was this tragic period when our Namperumal [Thiruvarangar] was in exile ~ close to 6 decades - (1323 to 1371 AD) – and great deal of credit goes to Acharyar Ulagariyar in protecting the Uthsava idol. 

In the year 1311 A.D and again in 1323 A.D, Muslim forces led by Malik Kafur and Ulugh Khan attacked the temple. In the first sack of Srirangam, all the golden gifts made to the temple were carried away but fortunately it did not affect the religious life at Srirangam.  There was to be another pillage whence the garrisoned Thiruvarangam fell in the hand of marauders. In the raid in 1331 AD,  Namperumal had to be moved to safety by a band of devotees headed by Pillai Lokacharyar – and in this period of 60 years, Arangan visited Madurai, Azhwar Thirunagari, Nagercoil, Thiruvananthapuram,  Quilon, Kozhikode, Sathyamangalam – and to Thirumala Tirupathi, first hidden in ravines of the Hill and then in the Temple – returned to glory in 1371 to the delight of all.

In the year 1205  on Thiruvonam in the month of Aippasi, was born Pillai Lokacharyar, (named after Swami Nampillai) – to  "Vadaku Thiruveedhi Pillai".  He had illustrious brother  Azhagiya Manavaala Perumal Naayanar. The most learned Acharyar Pillai Ulagariyar wrote 18 works that are known as "Ashtadasa Rahasyangal",  divided into three categories. The first category talks about Rahasya Thrayam containing 8 works; Thathva thrayam comprising 5 and another 5 that includes his magnum opus ‘ Srivacana booshanam’.  Swami Pillai lokacharyar delivered  discourses to his sishyas in "Kaatazhagiya Singar" mandapam in Srirangam.

In his Upadesa Rathna Maalai, Swami Manavala Maamunigal extols the works of Pillai Ulagariyar and states that only most learned  can understand the majestic Sri Vachana Bushanam, fewer still can practice. 

When the gruesome plundering occurred, Ulagariyar at his ripe old age (80+) took the vigraham of Thiruvarangan, proceeded towards Madurai.  At the outskirts, he protected Perumal at "Jyothishkudi" (near present day Aanaimalai)  in a cave and continued  thiruvaradhanam & all other rituals.   In protecting Arangan first from moghuls and then from robbers, in his old age, he fell ill and sadly passed away, but still ensured in organising youngsters to continue his avowed path of protection.  It is believed that he carried Thiruvarangan in the dense forest and in trying to reach a ravine, fell, but ensured that there was no harm to the divya vigraha. Injured in the process, he fell ill and finally breathed his last, reaching the abode of Sriman Narayana.
