Praying Sree Rama - நகுமோமு கநலேநி நாஜாலி தெலிஸி

Remember seeing this Malayalam movie at Saffire theatre – and this particular was song was too impressive. 

The plot of the movie was :  Kalyani, daughter of a rich NRI residing in USA, is brought up in Madras by her father’s friend.  She falls in love and decides to marry against the wishes of her family but when her lover knows that she will not get the wealth, ditches her.  The father who is very ill, sends them to a tribal community .. .. Vishnu comes on scene, he is an  escaped convict awaiting death penalty.  Vishnu's past is shown in flashback - he was a freelance photographer who was married to a woman, a mute dancer. Suspecting a visitor at home, he attacks and accidentally kills his wife. He later knows that the suspect is actually her brother who is a naxalite. He tells Kalyani that he escaped prison to make money for the surgery of his child. 

In the climax, warden takes Vishnu to jail most probable to be executed and movie ends    with Vishnu and Kalyani waving goodbye.  The movie was released in Dec 1988 and ran so well that it broke many records in Malayalam cinema – the movie was a big commercial success too.

தியாகய்யர் மனமுருகி பாடிய இந்த கீர்த்தனையின் பொருள்  :  ஸ்ரீ ரகுவீரா!  என் ராமச்சந்திரமூர்த்தியே !  !  உனது புன்னகை தவழும் முகத்தைப் பார்க்க இயலாத என் மனத்துயரைத் தீர்க்கலாகாதா? கிரிதாரியே ! உன் சேவகர்கள் என்னைப் பற்றி அவதூறு சொல்ல மாட்டார்களே ! வெகு தூரம் வர வேண்டும் என்று சொல்லி கருடன் உனது கட்டளைக்கு இணங்கவில்லையா? பரமாத்மா! அகிலாண்டவா ! எவரிடம் முறையிடுவேன் ! தாமதம் செய்யாமல் இந்த அடிமையைக் காத்தருள்வாய் ! -  ஓ ராமா உடனே எழுந்தருளி என்னை காத்திடுவாய்.

The song is from the blockbuster ‘Chitram’   written and directed by Priyadarshan starring  Mohanlal, Ranjini, Nedumudi Venu, Poornam Viswanathan, and others.  Mohanlal won the Kerala State Film Award - Special Jury Award for his performance in this film.  The singer - Neyyattinkara Vasudevan  was a Carnatic music vocalist who was awarded Padmasree.  He was a  disciple of Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer and Ramnad Krishnan, he combined tradition and innovation in his widely acclaimed career.
