Srirangapura Vihara - Sri Mannathar Purattasi Revathi purappadu 2022

“Sri Rangapura Vihara, Jaya Kodanda Ramavatara”, Most likely that you have heard this keerthana multiple times .. .. have you heard of Ramaswami Dikshithar.

An islet is a very small, often unnamed island. Most definitions are not precise, but some suggest that an islet has little or no vegetation and cannot support human habitation. It may be made of rock, sand and/or hard coral; may be permanent or tidal (i.e. surfaced reef or seamount); and may exist in the sea, lakes, rivers or any other sizeable bodies of water.  Whether an islet is considered a rock or not, it can have significant economic consequences under Article 121 of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, which stipulates that "Rocks which cannot sustain human habitation or economic life of their own shall have no exclusive economic zone or continental shelf." One long-term dispute over the status of such an islet was that of Snake Island (Black Sea).

Devotees come in large numbers to the Temple town of Srirangam for darshan of Sri Ranganathar.  Read that the temple  is now equipped with 300 steel benches and 30 wall-mount fans right from the entrance to its sanctum sanctorum.  Not sure, whether this would affect free movement and whether it would impede any purappadu and other rituals.  HR&CE which gets crores of revenue from this Temple, has however, taken the assistance of donors for these benches that reportedly costed Rs.11000/- each.   Further  15 wheelchairs and two battery cars are put to use and it is prayed that such facilities are properly taken care of and are to the help of devotees for longer time.   Also temple management should ensure that stray people and beggars do not remain seated in these benches  !!

this gem of a keerthana ‘Srirangapura vihara’ was  composed by Muthuswamy Dikshitar and made famous by the legendary voice of M.S.Subbulakshmi. The song is in praise of Sri Ranganatha of Srirangam, the primary deity of Vaishnavism.  O resident of the town called Ranga! Victory to you who incarnated as Rama, the famed owner of the bow Kodanda! Brave scion of the Raghu clan! Sings Deekshithar.

Anupallavi:

Angaja Janaka Deva Brndavana Saarangendra Varada Ramanta

Ramaswami Dikshita (1735–1817)[1] was a distinguished composer of Carnatic music and to him was born -  Muthuswami Dikshitar. He was a member of the courts of Amarasimha  and Tulaja II  of Thanjavur. Ramaswami Dikshitar was instructed in music and music theory by Melattur Veerabhadrayya and Venkata Vaidyanatha Dīkshitar, a grandson of Venkatamakhin, author of the Chaturdandiprakashika. His ragamalika using 108 ragas and talas is notable and the longest of its type.

Muthuswami Dikshitar (1776 – 1835), was a poet, singer and veena player, and a legendary composer of Indian classical music, one of the musical trinity of Carnatic music. Muthuswami Dikshitar was born in Tiruvarur near Thanjavur,   to a family that is traditionally traced back to Virinichipuram in the northern boundaries of the state.  His compositions, of which around 500 are commonly known, are noted for their elaborate and poetic descriptions of Gods  and temples and for capturing the essence of the raga forms through the vainika (veena) style that emphasises gamakas.  Muthuswami moved to the town of Manali, near Madras at the behest of Venkatakrishna Mudaliar, a local zamindar. The Dikshitar brothers accompanied the zamindar to Fort St. George nearby where they were introduced to Western orchestral music and the violin. An ascetic named Chidambaranatha Yogi then took Muthuswami under his wing and away to the city of  Benares.  Deekshithar was blessed by Tiruttani Murugar who  placed a piece of sugar candy in his mouth and commanded him to sing. This marked the beginning of his career in music and also led to him adopting the mudra, Guruguha, one of the many names of Murugan. His first composition was Śrināthādi guruguho jayati jayati in the raga Maya Malavagaula.   Muthuswami Dikshitar's brothers Chinnaswami  and Balaswami Dikshitar were also noted musicians.

"Rangapura Vihara" is a popular Carnatic song composed in Sanskrit by Muthuswami Dikshitar  and dedicated to Sri Ranganathaswamy of Srirangam. The title of the song means one who roams (vihara) in Srirangam (Rangapura). It details the exploits of the Lord Rama, whose family deity is Ranganatha of Srirangam. The song was rendered by M.S.Subbulakshmi, live at the United Nations.
