fragrant garlands for Sri Parthasarathi Emperuman - cardamom 2022

Cardamom   is a spice made from the seeds of several plants in the genera Elettaria and Amomum in the family Zingiberaceae.   They are recognized by their small seed pods: triangular in cross-section and spindle-shaped, with a thin, papery outer shell and small, black seeds; Elettaria pods are light green and smaller, while Amomum pods are larger and dark brown.  Cardamom has a strong, unique taste, with an intensely aromatic, resinous fragrance.   The first references to cardamom are found in Sumer, and in the Ayurvedic literatures of India.  Nowadays it is also cultivated in Guatemala, Malaysia, and Tanzania.  The German coffee planter Oscar Majus Klöffer introduced Indian cardamom to cultivation in Guatemala before World War I; by 2000, Guatemala had  become the biggest producer and exporter of cardamom in the world, followed by India.

 

The first e-auction of pesticide-free cardamom was held at the spices park at Puttady and Bodinayakanur recently.  In the auction, the maximum price quoted was ₹1,468 a kg and the average price ₹1,084. According to Spices Board of India officials, of the 11 lots arrived for the morning auction, the average price was ₹1,056.28 a kg while the maximum price quoted was ₹1,151. Of the 2,296.90 kg of cardamom, 1,832.30 kg was sold. The auction was held by South Indian Green Cardamom Company Ltd.  

The not so good news is - Indian cardamom is losing its aroma in the export market as the Guatemalan crop is flooding the Gulf region at lower prices. This has facilitated GCC countries to go for increased procurement of Guatemala cardamom which is currently selling at $5-12 per kg against the Indian price of $10-18, depending on the grades.
