Sri Andal thiruther - 2021 :

Thiruvallikkeni divaydesam is situate on the shores of Marina, on Bay of Bengal sea.  At first look, the Bay of Bengal seems a placid sea, but for the seasonal cyclones that disturb life in the littoral. It is almost a closed sea with  three countries bordering its northern reaches—Burma, Bangladesh and India. The northern waters of the Bay are also far from the main sea lines of communication in the Indian Ocean that connect the dynamic economies of East Asia with the traditional markets of Europe via the oil rich Gulf and rapidly growing Africa.  The largest bay in the world - 500 million people live on the coastal rim that surrounds it - is also the site of the majority of the deadliest tropical cyclones in world history.

According to a list maintained by Weather Underground, 26 of the 35 deadliest tropical cyclones in recorded have occurred here. Cyclone Amphan  was the latest,  perhaps not the last.  The worst places for storm surges, say meteorologists, tend to be shallow, concave bays where water, pushed by the strong winds of a tropical cyclone, gets concentrated or funnelled as the storm moves up the bay. The Bay of Bengal is a "textbook example of this type of geography", describes a  meteorologist    There are countries dependent on the Bay of Bengal in South Asia and Southeast Asia.

In ancient India, Bay of Bengal was known as Kalinga Sagar. Later during the British India, it came forth as the Bay of Bengal after the historic Bengal region, as the Port of Kolkata served as the gateway to the Crown rule in India.  The name of Bengal is derived from the ancient kingdom of Vanga, the earliest records of which date back to the Mahabharata epic in the first millennium BCE.  In epic Mahabaratha,  Anga, Vanga, and Kalinga are being  mentioned as close kingdoms in Bharata Varsha.   They had many holy places and sacred waters – Arjuna too visited the region during his pilgrimage.  The founders of Angas, Vangas, Kalingas, Pundras and Suhmas shared a common ancestry. They were all adopted sons of a king named Vali (Bali), born by a sage named Gautama Dirghatamas, who lived in Magadha close to the city of Girivraja.  Vanga was probably the center of the Gangaridai Empire mentioned by numerous Greco-Roman writers. The exact capital of ancient Vanga kingdom could not identified. After the rule of Gupta empire, ancient Bengal was divided into two independent states. They were the Gauda Kingdom and Vanga kingdom and archaeologists think that, Kotalipara in present-day Bangladesh was the capital of the independent Vanga kingdom.

Thiruppavai is the garland of 30 songs of faultless Sangam Tamil about  how the beautiful Moon like bejewelled maidens sang in praise of the Lord begetting boons – sung by Sri Andal, the daughter of Pattar Piran.  Those who sing these verses of Thiruppavai are bound to be joyous finding the eternal bliss as granted by Lord Sriman Narayana, the mighty and gracious Lord.

Today being the concluding day of Neeratta Uthsavsam, this morning it was Siriya thiruther at Thiruvallikkeni divyadesam.  Here are some photos of the purappadu and one can have darshan of Sri Andal in sitting posture, draped in a beautiful saree
