Nammalwar Thiruvadi Thozhal 2021

Irapathu day 10 ~ Sarrumurai – Nammalwar Thiruvadi Thozhal  2021

O Dark expanse-of-space, and all that is in it!  You are the sky, the light, the Gods and everything else, You are the creator, protector,  first-cause of Gods and men.  Alas, you have left me to bear my burden alone  .. .. laments Swami Nammalwar in his Thiruvaimozhi 10th decad.  Here are some photos of purappadu of yester years.  The first one is of Swami Nammazhvar at Thirukachi – rest are of Thiruvallikkeni.

It is very peaceful and soothing to look at the vast expanse  of the sky – of the stars, moon and celestial objects and thinking how far the horizon is !  .. .. Parallax   is a displacement or difference in the apparent position of an object viewed along two different lines of sight, and is measured by the angle or semi-angle of inclination between those two lines. To measure large distances, such as the distance of a planet or a star from Earth, astronomers use the principle of parallax.

The sky (also sometimes called celestial dome) is everything that lies above the surface of the Earth, including the atmosphere and outer space.  In the field of astronomy, the sky is also called the celestial sphere. This is an abstract sphere, concentric to the Earth, on which the Sun, Moon, planets, and stars appear to be drifting. The celestial sphere is conventionally divided into designated areas called constellations.  An observer on the surface of the Earth can see  only a small part of the sky, which resembles a dome (sometimes called the sky bowl) appearing flatter during the day than at night.

The celestial sphere can be considered to be infinite in radius. This means any point within it, including that occupied by the observer, can be considered the center. It also means that all parallel lines, be they millimetres apart or across the Solar System from each other, will seem to intersect the sphere at a single point, analogous to the vanishing point of graphical perspective.

The horizon is the line that separates the Earth from the sky. There two main types of horizons—Earth-sky horizons and celestial horizons. Both Earth-sky and celestial horizons have different sub-types of horizons.   The geographic horizon is the apparent boundary between the Earth and sky. Mountains, trees, and other elevated features are not considered part of the geographic horizon. The sea-level horizon is the geographic horizon at sea level. One of the best places to see the sea-level horizon is a beach. The ocean and the sky provide a clean, flat line where the Earth seems to meet the sky.

Celestial horizons are used by astronomers. They are measurements of the position of the Earth relative to the rest of the sky. The astronomical horizon is the imaginary horizontal plane always at a 90-degree angle from the observer's zenith (the point directly above the observer). Astronomical horizons are great circles that surround the observer.  The true horizon is the imaginary plane that passes through the center of the Earth, perpendicular to its radius. From orbit, the true horizon is spherical, following the shape of the Earth.

~ and our Emperuman is beyond the Universe – creator of the Universe, capable of alleviating all pain and distress – HE is the eternal saviour.  Bow to Him, Surrender to HIM.

Today,  3rd Jan 2021 marks the culmination of Irapathu Uthsavam. The latter part of Adhyayana Uthsavam – ‘Irapathu’  sarrumurai is  performed today.  This grand fete is performed for Swami Nammalwar and the 10th day is very significant for the “Thiruvadi Thozhuthal”.   Today it is a bonanza : Irapathu Sarrumurai,   & Thiruvadi thozhal.  Last year it was Sankaranthi too ..

On all the days of Irapathu there was purappadu in the evening – and it is Swami Manavala Mamunigal’s ‘Upadesa Rathinamalai’ in the  goshti… On Sarrumurai day, Swami Nammazhwar could be worshipped in his Thirumeni without kavacham.   After thiruveedhi purappadu  (hope this too gets restored sooner) ,  inside the Temple occurs the  famed ‘Thiruvadi Thozhal; Swami Nammazhwar’s entry  of Mokshapuri after a great life on this earth   – as he himself sung வைகுந்தம் புகுவது மண்ணவர்   விதியே’ [vaikuntham puguvathu mannavar vithiye’] is enacted.

Swami Nammalwar’s Thiruvaimozhi is of vedic excellence, elucidating the desire of Jeeva in attaining the Supreme Lord.  Alwar has given us thousands of sweetest hymns in Tamil with which we can forever engage in praising the glory of Lord – and in case, you nurse any doubt of the sins, troubles, of death, illness and more – the solution is too simple !  :    all our ills, obstacles, fears, sins will simply vanish upon uttering the name Kesava.
