நாகமேந்து மேரு வெற்பை நாகமேந்து மண்ணினை ~ Semiotics, Symbology and more !!

 

In life, often we feel things are ‘Greek & Latin’ – in Sampradhayam there is so much of symbolism, our little or no understanding of symbolism keeps us away in understanding the glorious practices preached by our preceptors.

 

Leonardo Vetra, one of CERN's top physicists who have discovered how to create antimatter, is murdered, his chest branded with an ambigram of the word "Illuminati", an ancient anti-religious organization thought extinct.   Robert Langdon is specially flown in  !!  he  is a fictional character created by author Dan Brown for his Robert Langdon book series.  He is a Harvard University professor of Religious Iconology and "symbology" (a fictional field related to the study of historic symbols, which is not methodologically connected to the actual discipline of semiotics).  It really worth reading in understanding the ambigrams and other symbols and the various theories  that are buried inside. 

நமது சம்பிரதாயத்தில், நன்னூல்களில், ஆழ்வார் பாசுரங்களில், பண்டைய ஏடுகளில் பல குறியீடுகள், சின்னங்கள், சங்கேத குறியீடுகள், அடையாளங்கள், ஒளிந்த செய்திகள் என உள்ளன. கருடன், நாகங்கள், மேரு போன்ற மலைகள் நேரிடையாகவும், மறைத்தும் பல முக்கிய உண்மைகளை உணர்த்துகின்றன. 

It is above all a long meditation on the forms of religion and art of Greek antiquity. Twelve Gods and harmonizing the movements of daily life with the grand order of the universe.   Each city and every region of Greece had its own calendar. In Egyptian astronomical tradition there was another type of calendar where the beginning of the year was related to the heliacal rising of Spica. This harked back to a more ancient age, the Age of Gemini.  To the sound of the right invocation, the gods of ancient Greece come back to life over the distance of centuries. Born of the earth, of space, of the sea, and of the starry sky, they are still here among us, still alive. Among the inspiring ruins of the great temples, the sleeping gods are always ready to be revived. Nobly they advance, dance, engage in combat, or take their ease, sculpted on pediments and metopes, painted on vases and shields, stamped on fine coins that are as beautiful as medals. If one looks closely, one may see their movements. In lending an ear, one may hear their words. All of them, heroes and gods  by their forms, ornaments, and gestures, express their place in the orderly world  that the Greeks called cosmos. 

At the beginning of the historical period, the religious beliefs of all the inhabitants of what is now Europe and Asia Minor seem to have shared many common elements, in particular the cult of a great solar god. The origin of this cult is indistinguishable from the awakening of human consciousness. Almost everywhere the most highly evolved and complex forms of worship must have been superimposed on the subsisting remnants of prehistoric lunar/solar cults. 

Semiotics   is the systematic study of sign processes and the communication of meaning. In semiotics, a sign is defined as anything that communicates intentional and unintentional meaning or feelings to the sign's interpreter.  Ssemiotics — is the social science that studies the nature of meaning and 'meaning-making. ' This discipline is concerned with the symbolism conveyed by objects and words. At the most rudimentary level, meaning is a product of the interaction between a sign system and a de-coder.  Semiosis is any activity, conduct, or process that involves signs. Signs can be communicated through thought itself or through the senses.   

மேரு மலை நமது தொன்மவியல் புராணங்களிலும், காவியங்களிலும் குறிப்பிடப்படும் ஒரு சிறப்பான  மலை.  மகாமேரு என்றும் மந்திர மலை என்றும் இம்மலை அழைக்கப்பெறுகிறது.  தேவர்களும், அசுரர்களும் இணைந்து பாற்கடலை கடைவதற்கு இம்மலையை மத்தாக பயன்படுத்தினார்கள் என்கிறது கூர்ம புராணம். சகல வஸ்துக்களுக்கும் எம்பெருமான் அந்தர்யாமியாயிருந்து கொண்டு அனைத்துக்கும் ஆதாரமாகிறான். உலகத்தில் ஒன்றுக்கொன்று தாரகங்களாகத் தோற்றும் பதார்த்தங்கட்கும் இம்வெம்பெருமானே தாரகன்! பூமியானது ஆதிசேஷனாலும், திக்கஜங்களாலும் தாங்கப்படுகிறது.

 

ஸ்ரீவைணவத்தில் நாகத்துக்கும் சிறப்பான இடமுண்டு. திருப்பாற்கடலில் எம்பெருமான் சயனித்து இருக்க ஆசனமாக இருப்பது அனந்தன்.  எம்பெருமான் ஸ்ரீமன் நாரணன் - "நாகமேந்துமாகன்”!    தேவர்களும் அசுரர்களும் பாற்கடல் கடைந்தபோது பெரும்  மந்தார மலையை மத்தாகவும்,   வாசுகி பாம்பினை கயிறாகவும் கொண்டு கடைய முடிவெடுத்தார்கள். ’ஒளிக்குவியல் போன்று பிரகாசிப்பது  மேரு மலை.  . அதன் சிகரங்களில் விழும் தங்கம் போன்ற சூரிய ஒளியை அது பிரதிபலித்தது.  தங்கத்தால் அலங்கரிக்கப்பட்டதும்  மிக அழகானதுமான அதில் தேவர்களும், கந்தர்வர்களும் உலவுவர். பாவங்கள் நிறைந்த மனிதர்களால் அந்த மலையை நெருங்கக்கூட முடியாது.  பயங்கரமான விலங்குகள் அந்த மலையின் சாரலில் அலைந்து கொண்டிருந்தன.  அது பல மூலிகைகளால் மணம்  கமழ்வதாக  விளங்கியது. அது சொர்க்கத்தை முத்தமிடுவது போன்ற உயரத்துடன், மலைகளிலேயே முதன்மையானதாக விளங்கியது.  அந்த மலை மரங்களாலும், அருவிகளாலும் திகழ்ந்து,  இனிய குரலில் மெல்லிசை பாடும் பறவைகளை எதிரொலித்துக்கொண்டு இருந்தது. தேவர்கள் அந்த மலையின் சிகரத்திலே ரத்தினங்களால் அலங்கரிக்கப்பட்ட ஒரு சபையிலே அமர்ந்திருந்தனர்.  திருமழிசைப்பிரான் தமது திருச்சந்த விருத்த பாசுரத்தில் : 

நாகமேந்து மேரு வெற்பை நாகமேந்து மண்ணினை

நாகமேந்து மாகமாக மாகமேந்து வார்புனல்

மாகமேந்து மங்குல் தீயொர் வாயுவைந்து அமைந்துகாத்து

ஏகமேந்தி நின் நீர்மை நின்கணே  இயன்றதே

 

என அருளிச்செய்கிறார். திருவனந்தாழ்வனாலே தரிக்கப்பட்ட திருமேனியையுடைய எம்பெருமானே!  ஸவர்க்கலோகத்தை தரிக்கிற மேரு பர்வதத்தையும், திருவனந்தாழ்வான்  மற்றும்  திக்கஜங்களாலே  தரிக்கப்பட்ட பூமியையும்,  பரம பதத்தையும், ஆகாசத்தாலே தரிக்கப்பட்ட சிறந்தகங்களையும், ஆகாசத்தாலே தரிக்கப்பட்ட மேக மண்டலத்தையும் ஐம் பூதங்களாம் பஞ்சவ்ருத்தி ப்ராணங்களையும் உருவாக்கி,  ரக்ஷித்தருளி  எல்லாவற்றையும்  ஒரு வஸ்துவே தரித்துக்கொண்டு நிற்கிறதென்று  உபநிஷத்தக்களில்) சொல்லப்பட்டுள்ள ஸ்வபாவம் உம்மிடத்தில் தான் உள்ளது !  அத்தகைய சிறந்த மேனியனை வணங்கி அடிபணிவதே எல்லா பிணிக்கும் மருந்து என அறுதியிடுகின்றார் பக்திசாரர்.
