Sri Azhagiya Singar Sesha vahanam 2022

How scared are you of this reptile ? – most are.. .. though they are worshipped in many mythologies, people are generally scared and see them as dangerous.  Sometime back a friend of mine, spotted one while travelling in a train, as passengers gathered to hurt – he gently took it in his possession, caressed it, took some photos and when the train was traversing a woody area, smoothly left it in the wild – wonder what this is about !! ~  snake !

Kukulkan, is the name of a Mesoamerican serpent deity that was worshipped by the Yucatec Maya people of the Yucatán Peninsula before the Spanish Conquest of the Yucatán. The depiction of the Feathered Serpent is present in other cultures of Mesoamerica.

A few years back, Archaeologists in Guatemala unearthed two Maya tombs that “miraculously escaped” looters’ tunnels underneath two Maya pyramids, where researchers hope that jade-inlaid teeth, an inscribed human tibia and a puzzling sun-god pendant could give insight into the rule of ancient “snake kings”. The tombs were found at the ancient ruins of Holmul, 300 miles north of Guatemala City, and date back to about 650-700AD, the era of Maya dominance before their mysterious collapse a few centuries later. Inside one was a puzzling artifact of a Maya dynasty that archaeologists call the snake kings, after the snakehead emblem of their house – a family that ruled 100 miles to the north, far from the tombs found in Holmul.

The team’s epigrapher,  said that this is the first finding of a jade artifact with the name of a snake king. The inscription on the necklace, which holds a carved cormorant’s head that morphs into the image of a sun god, is unusual because it belongs to a king from an entirely different city: “Yuknoom Ti’ Chan, Holy king of Kaanul.” The king was a member of the snake dynasty, 100 miles from their ancient capital of Dzibanche, which stands in modern Mexico. “It looks a lot like Game of Thrones or medieval Europe,” Estrada-Belli said. The snake kings stretched their influence far to the south of that city, and warred with Tikal for power over smaller kingdoms such as Holmul, Naranjo and Xunantunich. “It’s all being debated, but this jewel tells us that the dynasty’s relationships were quite pervasive, and even a secondary kingdom like Holmul could have a direct relationship with the overlord.”

Recent discoveries have suggested internal conflicts among the snake kings, including something resembling a civil war. Tikal eventually managed to overthrow the snake kings, though only after it probably endured a puppet ruler of the snake kings, Estrada-Belli said. “It’s just an ebb and flow of power between these two great kingdoms.” The jewel, he added, suggests that the snake kings “kind of micromanaged” each area. “It fleshes out the structure of Maya kingdoms or complex societies, and their hegemony, if you don’t want to use the word empire.”

There are more than 3,000 species of snakes on the planet and they’re found everywhere except in Antarctica, Iceland, Ireland, Greenland, and New Zealand. About 600 species are venomous, and only about 200—seven percent—are able to kill or significantly wound a human.  Almost all snakes are covered in scales and as reptiles, they’re cold blooded and must regulate their body temperature externally. Scales serve several purposes: They trap moisture in arid climates and reduce friction as the snake moves.  Most snakes live on land, but there are about 70 species of snakes that live in the Indian and Pacific oceans. Sea snakes and their cousins, kraits, are some of the most venomous snakes that exist, but they pose little threat to humans because they’re shy, gentle, and their fangs are too short to do much damage.

Of those who render service to MahaVishnu, Ananthan – the Adi Sesha serves Him in the best possible manner that one could visualize.  He is with Him when He is moving, sitting and at Thirupparkadal, Emperuman is reclining on him.  The serpentine Ananthazhwaan is ever at the service of the Lord in every possible manner.

There is the illustrious lineage of Purvacharyargal – the hierarchy of Srivaishnava preceptors – through whom the glorious traditions passed by in generations.  Its happy culmination with Namperumal Himself becoming disciple of Acarya Mamunigal redounds the wisdom of our holy lineage.  Swami Emperumanar (Sri Ramanujar) and Mamunigal – both were incarnation of Adisesha.  Born as Nayanar, Mamunigal was an ocean of knowledge, yet learnt at the feet of his erudite father and others – the way Sri Rama and Sri Krishna did, during their stay on earth – through courses under great sages of their times like Vasistha, Viswamitra, Sandeepani .. ..

. Here is one of the verses of Boothathazhwar:

                                                                       ~  which would mean  :

The Lord who reclines on a cool serpent bed went about driving a chariot in war. He followed a deer and lost his Sita, and slept on the hard floor.  What an irony. though! who are prostrate and worship with most fragrant flowers,  the Lotus feet of the Lord reclining in the Milky Ocean,  will get the benefit of reaching that great Emperuman residing in Paramapadam  ~ the feat that is available to those bright sacred souls of Nithya suris, which is not even available to those like Indira and other devas.
