Kanda Sashti Kavacham ~ #Vetrivel #Veeravel - Muruga !!

In the beautiful land of Thiruvallikkeni stands the magnificent temple of Lord Sri Parthasarathi.  The temple pond Kairavini pushkarini once bloomed full of lily flowers, giving the land the name.

As we move a kilo meter or two away from this beautiful temple, there is another ancient temple dedicated to Lord Siva.  The temple known as Thiruvetteeswarar Temple, giving the name to the area known as ‘Thiruvatteeswararpet’ – and in its sannathi street lived  Mahamahopadhyaya Dakshinathya Kalanidhi Uthamadhanapuram Venkatasubbaiyer Swaminatha Iyer (1855-1942), popularly known as "Tamizh thaththaa" (the grand old man of Tamil).

The temple is thronged by deovtees seeking   remedy from the adverse aspects of planets Rahu and Ketu. The temple has three flag posts (Kodi Maram)  for Lord Shiva, Lord Shanmuga and Goddess  Ambica, worshipped as Shenbagambikai. It is said that Mahalakshmi worshipped Lord Shiva here to have the Hand of Lord Vishnu.   Vinayaka Perumal  has a separate shrine where devotees light lamps with coconut oil and coconut garlands.  Muruga Peruman, Shanmugar  graces from a separate shrine on the peacock vehicle. On every Sashti day – 6th day of either new moon or full moon days – pujas are conducted in the shrine with six flowers, six nivedhanas, six fruits by six priests performing the ‘Shatru Samhara Trisadha’ puja, a special event in the temple.

The temple by some accounts dates back to 7th century and even older.  This place was dense with Shenbaga trees and about 300 years ago, people observed a cow milking on its own daily and under the place was found a Siva linga, Swayumbu with a cut appearance.  During East India Co rule, in 1734 records shows exemption of taxes.

The legend of Arjuna and Lord Siva in disguise as a hunter,  vying for the shot at a swine emanated a battle and Arjuna without realizing it was Lord Siva struck leaving him bleeding.  Arjuna beseeched pardon and obtained Pasupathastra.   As Siva  granted darshan to Arjuna in the guise of a hunter, He is named Parthaprakara Linga and Tiruvetteeswarar.

During the Arthajama puja at night, only the Padam-feet of Lord Shiva are taken to Palli Arai (bed room) in Shiva temples. Here, Lord Shiva Himself is taken in. There is a separate idol for this purpose. This is placed in the Artha Mandap in the temple.  Navagraha puja for the nine planets is also  performed in the temple.

Here are some photos of the temple taken during Chithirai festival last year ~ also the vibrant Siva vadhya kuzhu and their devoted rendering.
