It’s easy to be swept away by their fragrance and appearance; these buds hold more power than a muse to our poetic whimsy. Practically speaking, they form the foundational food source for ecosystems around the world.

நாற்றம் ~ தமிழை சரியாக அறியாதவர்கள் முகம் சுளிக்கக்கூடும் ! இச்சொல் தற்காலத்தில் கெட்ட வாசனையை குறிக்கும் சொல்லாகப் பயன்படுத்தப்படுகிறது. உண்மையில்  நாற்றம் என்பது நறுமணத்தைக் குறிக்கும் வார்த்தை.  .

என்ற குறளில் மலரின் நறுமணத்தை, நாற்றம் என்ற சொல்லில்தான் வள்ளுவர் குறிப்பிடுகிறார். மலரப் போகின்ற மொட்டில் இருக்கும் மணம்போல இப்பெண்ணினது நகைமொக்குள் ஒரு குறிப்பு உண்டு என்பது பாடலின் பொருள். நறுமணத்தை குறிக்கும் வேறு சொற்கள், வாடை, நறுநாற்றம், வாசனை.

Blooming flowers are one of the most beautiful things you can see in nature.  Back home, flowers are considered important in our worship.  We offer flowers to our Gods. After 10 days of  Brahmothsavam, it is rest called ‘Vidayarri’ for Sri  Parthasarathi Perumal  - and after 10  days of rest, comes the florally bedecked ‘Pushpa Pallakku – the palanquin with flowers’.  The floral palanquin  looks beautiful and pervades goodness all around – treat to the eyes, ears and senses  of Bakthas.

பூக்கள் அழகானவை; நறுமணம் தர வல்லன.  பூக்களை அழகாக  தொடுத்து இறைவனுக்கு சாற்றி வழிபடுவது தொன்று தொட்டு உள்ள மரபு. ஒரு நாட்டில் அதிகமாக மலர்கள் காணப்படுவதனை வைத்தே அந்த நாட்டின் நீர்வளம், நில வளம், மக்களின் மனவளம், ஆகியவற்றை நன்கு உணரலாம். இதனைப் பழங்காலந்தொட்டு தமிழ்ப் புலவர்கள் தம் இலக்கியங்கள் வாயிலாகப்  உணர்த்தி வந்துள்ளனர்.   நீலம், நெய்தல், குவளை, ஆம்பல், அனிச்சம்; குறிஞ்சி;  வாகை;வகுளம் ; கோங்கம்; - என பல மலர்கள் உள்ளனவாம்.  இவை பல நாம் பார்த்ததில்லை அல்லது பார்த்தாலும் இதுதான் என விவரிக்க தெரியாது.  சிறுவயதில் பல இல்லங்களில் ஈர்குச்சியினால் தைக்கப்பட்ட மந்தாரை இலையை  சாப்பிட உபயோகித்து பார்த்துள்ளேன்.  சில தகவல்களின்படி, ஐரோப்பிய நாடுகளுக்கு மந்தாரை இலைகளை ஏற்றுமதி செய்கிறார்களாம்.   ஆங்கே மந்தாரை தட்டுகள் வழக்கத்தில் உள்ளனவாம் !!

நாம் பார்த்த அளவில் - மல்லிகை,  முல்லை,  செண்பகம், தாமரை, மகிழம், ரோஜா,  அல்லி, விருச்சி,  செங்காந்தள், சம்பங்கி, பச்சை சம்பங்கி;   போன்ற நறுமலர்கள் திருக்கோவில்களில் எம்பெருமானுக்கு சாற்றப்பெற்று வருகின்றன.

செல்கதிர் மாலையும் மயக்குமாலோ செக்கர்நன்மேகங்கள் சிதைக்குமாலோ**

புஷ்பங்கள்  பற்றிய பல குறிப்புகள் சங்க தமிழிலும் நமது திவ்யப்ப்ரபந்தத்திலும் உள்ளன. சுவாமி நம்மாழ்வார் "மல்லிகை கமழ்தென்றலீருமாலோ வண்குறிஞ்சியிசை"  எனும் போது -- மல்லிகையின் பரிமளத்தோடு கூடின தென்றலையும்; வண்குறிஞ்சி இசை என்னும்  இடத்தில் 'செவிக்கினிய குறிஞ்சிப் பண் இசையையும்' குறிக்கிறார்- குறிஞ்சி என்று ஒரு நிலப்பரப்பும்; குறிஞ்சி என்று அரிய பூவினமும் உண்டு.   பெரியாழ்வார்  - "வலங்காதின் மேல்தோன்றிப் பூவணிந்து மல்லிகை வனமாலை மெளவல் மாலை" என - மேல்தோன்றிப்பூ,  மல்லிகை, செங்காந்தள் பூ,  காட்டுமல்லிகை மாலை இவற்றை குறிக்கிறார். 

Swami Nammalwar says …. ‘the most pleasant fragrance of jasmine –wafting breeze,  ears receiving the pleasing kurinji music; Sun setting with beautiful red colours in the horizon – all attracting -  but more attracting was the pleasing sight of the fragrant palanquin made of flowers – for they were set for the most beautiful Allikkeni Emperuman ‘Sri Parthasarathi’.

Today (8^th May 2019) is the ‘Pushpa Pallakku – the palanquin with flowers’. Favourite memories are triggered by our sense of smell ~ flowers are admired for their beauty, exquisite shapes, spectrum of colours and more so for their fragrance. In our tradition, the decorative wreath of flowers woven together as garlands adorn God.  Flowers have their pride of place and are mentioned in our epics – in Divyaprabandham too.

பெரியாழ்வார் கண்ணனது குழந்தை பருவத்தை வரிசையாக அனுபவித்து, அவருக்கு :செண்பகம், மல்லிகை, பாதிரிப்பூ, தமனகம், மருவு, செங்கழுநீர், புன்னை, குருக்கத்தி,இருவாட்சி, கருமுகை - என பலபல மலர்களை அணிந்துகொள்ளுமாறு வேண்டி அழைக்கிறார்.  பல்வேறு மணங்களை தரும் மலர்களை எல்லாம் கொணர்ந்தேன்,இவைகளை இப்போதே சூடிக்கொள் என பிரார்த்திக்கிறார்.  

நம்மாழ்வார் தனது திருவாய்மொழி "திண்ணன் வீடு" என்கிற பத்தில் : "தேவும் எப்பொருளும் படைக்கப்*   பூவில் நான்முகனைப் படைத்த*   தேவன் எம்பெருமானுக்கு அல்லால்*     பூவும் பூசனையும் தகுமோ ?  -  என வினவுகிறார்.  தேவர்களையும் மற்றை எல்லாப் பொருள்களையும் உருவாக்குவதற்காக   நான்முகனை படைத்தவன். அத்தகைய தேவாதிதேவனான எம்பெருமானுக்கு  அல்லாமல் ஏனையோர்க்கு மலர்களும் மலர்களால் அர்ச்சித்து வணங்கும் வணக்கமும் தகுவன ஆகுமோ? ஆகா !!!! 

புஷ்பப் பல்லக்கு  என்பது வாசம் தரும் நல்ல  மலர்களால் ஆனது. திருவல்லிக்கேணியில் பிரம்மோத்சவம் கண்டு அருளிய எம்பெருமான்  'விடாயாற்றி' என இளைப்பாறுகிறார். இவ்வமயத்தில் இசைக்கச்சேரிகளும் திருக்கோவிலில் நடைபெறுகின்றன.  பிறகு மணம் தரும் மலர்களால் அலங்கரிக்கப்பட்டு சிறப்பாக வடிவமைக்கப்பட்ட 'புஷ்பப் பல்லக்கில்' புறப்பாடு கண்டு அருள்கிறார்.   பூக்கள் அணிவதற்கு ஏற்ற சகல சௌந்தர்ய ஸௌகுமார்யங்களையும் தகுதியையும், முதன்மையும் உடையவர் - ஸ்ரீமன் நாராயணன் மட்டுமே.

இன்று (8.5.2019) இரவு, ஸ்ரீ பார்த்தசாரதி  சீர்மையுடன் அமைக்கப்பட்டு மணந்த புஷ்பப்பல்லக்கில் புறப்பாடு கண்டு அருளினார்.    அவ்வமயம்  எடுக்கப்பட்ட சில படங்கள் இங்கே.                                                            அடியேன் : ஸ்ரீனிவாச தாசன்.
