Thiruvallikkeni Nampillai Sannathi ~ Thirukkannapuram sarruppadi 2020

Even under worst Corona times, our faith in Emperuman will save us.  Worship him and be rid of diseases.  Swami Nammalwar ordains us to go and surrender to the Lord Sowriraja Perumal at Thirukkannapuram and to those who fall at His feet, there would be no despair !  

Ask any proud resident of Thiruvallikkeni divyadesam – the address or significance of   Saraswathi Bhandaram – once the storehouse of knowledge, that had a great library of books (palm leaf manuscripts !) , that was purposefully built to be a Press for Sri Vaishnava literature (publication of granthams in Telegu) and ran as a manual printing press for many important books .. ..  most likely that people may not know ! but ask them where ‘komutti bungalow’ – is, you could easily be directed to the odd houses in an agraharam near Sri Peyalwar sannathi to the north of Sri Parthasarathi Swami temple. 

The pristine land of Kashmir nestled in the midst of Great Himalayas gets its name from Sage Kashyapa. Legend has it the central valley of Kashmir was once fully inundated making it a huge ocean-like lake. It was  Sage Kashyapa who drained the waters and made the valley hospitable.   The land got its name as Kashyapa-Mira which later came to be known as Kashmir.  This region  is the abode of Goddess Saraswati who appeared to  Sage Paulastya   in the form of a Swan.    The Sharada Peeth on the banks of Krishna Ganga river in Kashmir was the nodal centre of ancient Indian wisdom for centuries.  Swami Ramanujar along with Koorathazhwan went to Sri Bhandaram  at Kachmeeram for Bodhayana vriti – and later became Bashyakarar. 

 

On 28.11.2020 after completion of 9^th decad of Thiruvaimozhi in the ongoing uthsavam at Sri Nampillai sannathi, Thiruvallikkeni – Dr U.Ve. Mandayam Ananthanpillai Venkata Krishnan swami briefed the history of the place and its creators.  Way back in 1874, Saraswathi Bhandaram Committee was constituted  with Yogi Parthasarathy Iyengar as secretary.  With great efforts they collated  manuscripts of works on Visishtadvaita and published them in the Saraswathi Bhandaram Press,  located in what is Komutti bungalow now.  Yogi Parthasarathi Swami who was born in Karthigai Avittam in 1840 (it is his 180^th birth celebrations now – 3^rd sahstiabda poorthi) brought in knowledgeable resources of grantham and also those who learnt printing technology for publication of rare granthas in book form.  

 

Yogi Parthasarathi Iyengar hailed from mandya (Mandayam Iyengars) – of a lineage of great scholars who earlier had been appointed royal pandits of King Krishna Devaraya, later becoming Pradhans (Chief Ministers) under Mysore Wodeyar Kings. With Islamic invasion and rule of Hyder & Tipu Sultan – they moved out.  Tirumal Row came to Thiruvallikkeni ,  and Yogi was the grandson born in 1840.  He & his wife Yogi Singamma were instrumental in this Saraswathi Bandaram and later Ammaji mandir in Ayodhya, managed from the funds here.    It is recorded that the scholastic Yogi Parthasarathi Iyengar was suggested to represent Hinduism in World of Parliament of Religions but being very orthodox would not cross the sea.  

Sri Nampillai, in the Acharya paramparai is known for his scholastic excellence. He was the disciple of Sri Nanjeeyar and acharyar of Vadakku Thiruveethipillai. His commentary on Thiruvoimozhi known as Muppathu Aarayira(m)ppadi -  is considered as the best amongst the vyakyanams; considered equivalent to Thiruvoimozhi itself and  is celebrated as “Eedu” .

Saraswathi Bandaram committee hailing Acaryan Nampillai built a sannathi at this place  - later the  idol of Namperumal was also installed alongside.  This year beautiful Sri Ranganayaki thayar is also blessing us here.    In today’s celebrations it was ‘Sri Sowriraja Perumal – Thirukkannapuram’ thirukolam with rendering of Thiruvaimozhi Thirukkannapuram pasuram.

வேதநாவர்  விரும்பும்  திருக்கண்ணபுரத்து

ஆதியானை* அடைந்தார்க்கு    அல்லலில்லையே. 

திவ்யமான வேதங்களை நன்கு கற்ற  வைதிகர்கள் விரும்பி வசிக்கும் இடமான - திருக்கண்ணபுரத்திலே  எழுந்ததருளியிருக்கிற  முழுமுதற்கடவுளான எம்பெருமானை  ஆச்ரயித்தவர்களுக்கு, எவ்வித துக்கமும் வாராது.   அவ்வெம்பெருமானின்  திருவடிகளை எப்போதும் ஸேவிக்குமளவில், நோய்கள் அறும்,  பாவங்கள் சேரமாட்டா !!  இவ்வளவு சிறப்பு வாய்ந்த திருக்கண்ணபுரத்து சௌரிராஜ பெருமாளை  அடைந்தவர்க்கு ஒரு குறையும் இருக்காது என்கிறார் சுவாமி நம்மாழ்வார்.

Kaisika Ekadasi - Kaisika Pun ... Thirukkurungudi divyadesam

Today 26.11.2020  is Karthigai Revathi ; day 7 of Kaliyan uthsavam ~ today is Ekadasi too – a very special one at that – “Kaisika Ekadasi”.  Sure you would have heard and admired that great song “Thirupparkadalil Palli kondaye – Sriman Narayana ” !!  

Ekadasi is an all important day ~  and today  assumes greater significance being  Kaisika Ekadasi.  On days of Ekadasi – fasting, worshipping Sriman Narayana and listening to religious discourses are all valued.  Upavavasa could mean ‘remaining by the side of the Lord’ – and on these days, we should eat only food that is offered to Perumal, medidate, recite and think of Sriman Narayana all the time.  I have been writing about “Kaisika Mahatmiyam” and the story of Nampaduvaan.  Of the many Ekadasis, the one occurring in the Shukla paksha of Karthigai month is very important.  Kaisika is ‘Punn’ [raga / tune] – the legend of Kaisika puranam is associated with Numpaduvan at Thirukurungudi – which I am posting in detail separately.  

கைசிகப் பண் பாடிய ஏகாதசி கைசிக ஏகாதசி.

ஏகாதசி என்பது சந்திரனின் இயக்கத்தை அடிப்படையாகக் கொண்ட காலக் கணிப்பு முறையில், 15 நாட்களுக்கு ஒரு முறை சுழற்சி முறையில் வரும்  ஒரு நாள்.    இந்த நாட்கள் பொதுவாகத் "திதி" என்னும் பெயரால் அழைக்கப்படுகின்றன. அமாவாசை நாளையும், பூரணை (பௌர்ணமி, முழு நிலவு) நாளையும் அடுத்து வரும் பதினோராவது திதி ஏகாதசி ஆகும். ஏகாதச எனும் வடமொழிச் சொல் பதினொன்று எனப் பொருள்படும்.   30 நாட்களைக் கொண்ட சந்திர மாதமொன்றில் அமாவாசைக்கு அடுத்த நாள் முதல் பூரணை ஈறாக உள்ள சுக்கில பட்சம் எனப்படும் வளர்பிறைக் காலத்தின் பதினோராம் நாளும், பூரணையை அடுத்து வரும் நாளிலிருந்து அமாவாசை முடிய உள்ள கிருட்ண பட்சம் எனப்படும்.    

நாம் அறிந்த உலகம் பொருளாதார மயமானது !!  - மக்கள் உழைப்பதும், பிழைப்பதும் ஏதோ ஒன்றைப் பெறுவதற்காகத்தான். ஆனால் பெறுவதே தருவதற்குத்தான் என்பதை உணர்த்தியவன் நம்பாடுவான் எனும் அரிய  பக்தன். பெருமாளைப் பண்களால்  பாடுவதே தனது பாக்கியமாகக் கருதியவன், வீணையும் கையுமாக அவன் பாடுவதைக் கேட்க காதுமடல் சாய்த்துக் காத்திருப்பார் பெருமாள். இந்த திவ்யசரிதை தான் கைசிக புராணம்.

கைசிகம் என்பது ஒருவகைப் பண் ஆகும். வராக அவதாரத்தின்போது பூமாதேவிக்கு வராகப் பெருமாள் (எம்பெருமான் ஸ்ரீமன் நாரணன்) இதை அருளியதாக வராக புராணம் கூறுகிறது. வைகுண்ட ஏகாதசி முன்னர் வரும், கார்த்திகை மாத வளர்பிறை ஏகாதசி அன்று பாணர் குலதிலகம் நம்பாடுவான் கைசிகப் பண் இசையில் பாடியதால் இந்த ஏகாதசியை கைசிக ஏகாதசி என்றும் அழைப்பர்,. திருநெல்வேலி மாவட்டம் நாங்குநேரி அருகேயுள்ள திருக்குறுங்குடிக் கோயிலில் குடிகொண்டுள்ள நம்பிப்பெருமாள் மீது பக்திகொண்ட பாணர் குலத்தைச் சேர்ந்த நம்பாடுவார் என்ற பக்தரின் இறைப்பற்றைக் கூறுவதுதான் கைசிக புராணம். 

Western Ghats, very rich in bio-diversity,  is older than the Himalayan mountain range. The  forests of the wide ranging region include some of the best representatives of non-equatorial tropical evergreen forests in the world. A UNESCO World Heritage site, the Western Ghats has a significant impact on the monsoon weather pattern in the country.  At least 325 globally threatened (IUCN Red Data List) species occur in the Western Ghats. It possesses rich varieties of  flora and fauna and some of the critically endangered ones thrive here. Howsoever interesting it be otherwise, for us – this mountain range is most important to Srivaishnavaites for the great divyadesam  

 

It is “ThirukKurungudi” divyadesam  located on the  foot of the Mahendra Hill on the Western Ghat. From Chennai, one can take the Kanyakumari/Ananthapuri Express to Valliyur. From here, one can reach Thirukkurungkudi (10 km) in 20 minutes by boarding the Papanasam bound bus.   At this divine place, stands the most majestic Azhagiya Nambirayar Temple ~ sung by Periyazhwar,  Thirumazhisaippiran, Thirumangai Azhwar and Swami Nammazhwar.   The famous ‘Kaisika puranam’ is associated with this temple and is read on ‘shukla paksha’ dwadasi of the month of Karthigai, known as ‘Kaisika Dwadasi’ and enacted in drama form too .. .. ..  here is Swami Nammalwar’s pasuram on this divyadesam : 

எங்ஙனேயோ அன்னை மீர்காள்!   என்னை முனிவது நீர்?,

நங்கள்கோலத்   திருக்குறுங்குடி நம்பியை நான்  கண்டபின்,

சங்கினோடும் நேமியோடும் தாமரைக் கண்களொடும்,

செங்கனிவாய்   ஒன்றினொடும் செல்கின்றது  என்நெஞ்சமே.

 

நம்மாழ்வார் நாயகி பாவத்திலே  எம்பெருமானிடம் ஆழ்ந்த மையல் கொள்கிறார்.  அவர் உரைக்கும் வார்த்தை !  அன்னைமீர்களே !  நீங்கள் என்னை சீறுவது எதற்கு? சீறிப் பயனென்? வேறுமாகில் திருக்குறுங்குடி நம்பியின் வடிவழகைச் சீறுங்கோள்!  திருக்குறுங்குடிப் பெருமானை, அந்த வடிவழகிய நம்பியை  நான் ஸேவிக்கப் பெற்ற பின்பு, என் நெஞ்சமமானது, எப்படி பொருந்தி என்னிடம் இருக்கும் ?  நாம் அநுபவிப்பதற்குரிய சிறந்தவனான - சங்கு சங்கரங்களோடும்,  அழகிய தாமரை  போன்ற  திருக்கண்களோடும், சிவந்த கனிபோன்ற ஒப்பற்றதான அதரத்தோடும் உள்ள எம்பெருமானை நோக்கியே செல்கின்றது.  அவனிடம் சேர்த்தலே நம் அனைவருக்கும் உலப்பு - நம்மை செம்மைப்படுத்த வல்லது.

இந்தக் கைசிக புராண நாடகத்தை 500 ஆண்டுகளுக்கு முன்பே சங்கரக்கம்பர், நாராயணன், குறுங்குடி காந்தம்மாள் போன்றோர் நாடக வடிவில் இயற்றி நடித்து வந்தனராம்.  தமிழிசை மரபில் ‘கைசிகப் பண்’ என்றழைக்கப் படுவதே இன்றைய ‘பைரவி’ யாகும். (ஹிந்துஸ்தானி இசையில் ‘பைரவி என்றழைக்கப்படுவது கர்நாடக இசை யின் ‘தோடி’ ராகமாகும்).: ராகங்களும் திரைப்படப் பாடல்களும்  ~ அறந்தை மணியன் [லக்ஷ்மன் ஸ்ருதி இணையத்தில்]  ஸ்வாமி ஐயப்பன் படத்தில் பிரபலமான "திருப்பாற்கடலில் பள்ளி கொண்டாயே ! ஸ்ரீமன் நாராயணா" என்ற பாடல் இந்த பண்ணில் அமைந்துள்ளதாம்.   படம்: ஸ்வாமி ஐயப்பன்(1975);  பாடியவர்: கே ஜே யேசுதாஸ்;          இசையமைப்பாளர்: த.தேவராஜன்; பாடல் வரிகளை எழுதியவர் : கவியரசு  கண்ணதாசன்

HE is the eternal SAviour .. வண்ணமா மணிச்சோதி - கேசவன்தமர்

இவ்வுலக வாழ்வில், மனிதர்க்கு உரியதாயும் எப்போதும் நெருக்கமானதாகவும் இருப்பது எது : - அவர் தம் மனமே !!  -  செந்நாப்போதார் திருவள்ளுவரின் வாக்கு :  

தஞ்சம் தமரல்லர் ஏதிலார் தாமுடைய

நெஞ்சம் தமரல் வழி.

ஒருவர்க்கு தாம் உரிமையாகப் பெற்ற நெஞ்சமே உறவாகாதபோது அயலார் உறவில்லாதவராக இருப்பது எளிதேயாகும்.  தமர் என்ற தமிழ் சொல்லுக்கு பல அர்த்தம் உண்டு.  :  சுற்றத்தார், உறவினர், உறவோர், ; தமக்குவேண்டியோர்; தம்மவர்  ; சிறந்தார் ; பரிசனம் ; கருவியால் அமைத்த துளை ; துளையிடுங் கருவி. 

Frances H. Arnold, PhD, won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2018, which is kind of a big deal. It’s hard to become a Nobel Laureate in a scientific field without having contributed a lot to science and had many successes as a scientist.

Some voices raise during difficult situations – be if a cyclone like Nivar or like the Pandemic that the world is facing now.  Some would try to put forth arguments that if God were to be existent – why miseries for humans ? – why not poor people be saved from the fury of nature and diseases. Science (from the Latin word scientia, meaning "knowledge") is a systematic enterprise that builds and organizes knowledge in the form of testable explanations and predictions about the universe.  The evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins is probably the most famous contemporary proponent of this view, which has intellectual roots dating back at least to political theorist Karl Marx and psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud. In his book The God Delusion, Dawkins argued that religious faith is “persistent false belief held in the face of strong contradictory evidence”, and thus delusional. They would try to advance theories that only Science is right and that everything scientific is proven without ever realizing or admitting the fact the findings of Science do tend to change over the years and one proposition is rubbished in a few years !

This is no post to that religious beliefs  confer immunity from a disease or disaster but it is our belief that provides solace in tougher times.   For most people in the world, the answer seems obvious: Because it’s self-evident that God exists. From the point of view of the believer, the really puzzling question is how anyone could not believe. Now getting back to that Nobel laureate in Chemistry in 2018 – recognized by a powerful group of Scientists, tweeted a couple of years later,  that -   I am totally bummed to announce that we have retracted last year's paper on enzymatic synthesis of beta-lactams. The work has not been reproducible.  Frances H. Arnold, PhD, won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2018,  and in 2020 stated that it   is painful to admit, but important to do so. I apologize to all. I was a bit busy when this was submitted, and did not do my job well. What will happen to the findings, the postulation and the experiments based on that !! 

For us Srivaishnavaites, the eternal belief and faith is on Sriman Narayana, on doing kainkaryams to Him and reaching His lotus feet – accomplishing oneself to be His devotee, His near – “Kesavan Thamar”.

வண்ணமா  மணிச்சோதியை  அமரர்தலைமகனை,

கண்ணனை நெடுமாலைத்  தென்குருகூர்ச்சடகோபன்,

பண்ணிய  தமிழ்மாலை   ஆயிரத்துள்ளிவை பன்னிரண்டும்,

பண்ணில் பன்னிரு நாமப்பாட்டு    அண்ணல்தாள்   அணைவிக்குமே.

 

நல்ல நிறமுடைய நீலமணியின் ஒளியையுடையனாய்,வட மதுரையிலே கண்ணனாக  திருவவதாரம் பண்ணின நம் ஸ்ரீமன் நாராயணன் தம்மை விரும்பிய ஆச்ரிதர் பக்கலில்  அளவு கடந்து செல்லுகின்ற வியாமோஹத்தை உடையவன்.   அத்தகைய சிறப்பு வாய்ந்த  எம்பெருமானைக் குறித்து தென் குருகூர்சடகோபன் ஸ்வாமி  நம்மாழ்வார்   நித்யஸூரி நிர்வாஹகனாய் அருளிச்செய்த தமிழ் மாலையாகிய இவ்வாயிரத்தினுள்ளும் பண்ணோடு கூடின  நாமப் பாட்டு இவை பன்னிரண்டும், ஸர்வேச்வரனுடைய  திருவடிகளை சேர்ப்பிக்கும்.

Praying Sri Mannathar - Lord of Thiruvarangam ~ : ஊரிலேன் காணியில்லை

திருவரங்கத்து உறையும் என் திருவரங்கனே  ! ~ உன்னையல்லால்

என்னை உய்விக்க வல்லவர் எவர்  உளர்  ??

காணி நிலம் வேண்டும் – பராசக்தி..  காணி நிலம் வேண்டும், - அங்கு

தூணில் அழகியதாய் – நன்மாடங்கள்  .. துய்ய நிறத்தினதாய் - 

                              முண்டாசு கவிஞன் சுப்பிரமணிய பாரதியாரின் பாடல் வரிகள்.  காணி என்பது நில அளவை .. .. சுமார் 57500 சதுர அடி ஒரு காணியாம்.  

Quite obvious that Mahakavi Subramanya Barathi refers not to a small piece of land, but to a land of his choice, of happiness – so what would make man happy!  

மண் ஆசை மனிதனை ஆட்டிப்படைத்துள்ளது.  பெரிய பெரிய சாம்ராஜ்யங்கள் மேலும் நிலத்தை கவரும் ஆசையில் சண்டையிட்டு மாண்டன.  அரசர்கள் படையெடுத்து பல தூரங்கள் சென்றனர்.  மாவீரன் அலெக்சாண்டர் இந்திய கண்டம் வரை வெற்றி கண்டவர் ஆனால் தனது ஊருக்கு திரும்பாமலே மறைந்தார்.  இந்தியாவை மௌரியர்கள், குப்தர்கள் என பலர் ஆண்டனர்.  தென்னகத்தில் சேர, சோழ, பாண்டிய, பல்லவ, புலிகேசி, சாளுக்கிய மன்னர்கள் ஆண்டனர்.   தெற்கே விஜயநகர சாம்ராஜ்ய சிதைவுக்குப் பின்னர் ஆங்காங்கே சிதறடிக்கப்பட்ட சிறுசிறு பகுதிகளை விஜயநகர சாம்ராஜ்யத்தின் சிதைவுக்கு முன்னர் நியமிக்கப்பட்ட ஆளுநர்களால் நிர்வகிக்கப்பட்டு வந்தது.  சிதறுண்ட 500-க்கும் மேற்பட்ட சிறுசிறு நிலப்பகுதிகளைச் சிற்றரசர்களும், ஜமீன்தாரர்களும், பாளையக்காரர்களும் ஆட்சிபுரிந்து வந்தனர். அவர்கள் எல்லாம் என்ன ஆனார்கள் ? - சிலருக்கு வரலாற்றில் சிறு இடம் உண்டு - பலரது சுவடே இல்லை.  இன்றைய சூழ்நிலையில்,  உலக நாடுகளில் வியத்தகு முன்னேற்றமடைந்துள்ள சில நாடுகள் முன்னேற்றப் பாதையில் மேலும் விரைந்து செல்கின்றன. இன்னும் சில நாடுகள் முன்னேற்றத்துக்கு வழிதெரியாமலும், வழிகாட்டுதலும் இல்லாமல், பசியால், பட்டினியால் தத்தளித்துக் கொண்டிருக்கின்றன.

 

இது உலக இயல்பு .. இன்னமும் கொஞ்சம் காணலாம், பிரபஞ்சத்தில் வேறு எங்கேனும் உயிர்நிலை உள்ளனவா ?   செவ்வாய் கிரகத்தில் உள்ள கேல் பள்ளத்தாக்கு வழியாக 400 கோடி ஆண்டுகளுக்கு முன்னர் வெள்ளம் வழிந்தோடியதாக ஓர் ஆராய்ச்சியின் மூலம் தெரியவந்துள்ளது. தண்ணீர் இருந்ததன் அடிப்படையில் அக்கிரகத்தில் உயிர்கள் இருந்திருக்கலாம் எனவும் தெரியவருகிறது.  அமெரிக்க விண்வெளி ஆய்வு நிறுவனமான நாசா  செவ்வாய் கிரகத்துக்கு கியூரியாசிட்டி என்ற விண்கலத்தை அனுப்பியது. அந்த விண்கலத்தின் ரோவர் (சுற்று வாகனம்) சேகரித்த தரவுகளை அமெரிக்காவில் உள்ள கார்னெல் பல்கலைக்கழகத்தைச் சேர்ந்த விஞ்ஞானிகள் ஆய்வு செய்தனர். இந்த ஆய்வின் அடிப்படையில், ஒரு விண்கல்லின் தாக்கத்தால் ஏற்பட்ட வெப்பம் காரணமாக, செவ்வாயின் தரைப்பரப்பில் இருந்த உறைந்த பனி உருகி, அங்குள்ள "கேல்' என்ற பள்ளத்தாக்கு வழியாக பிரம்மாண்டமான வெள்ளம் வழிந்தோடியிருக்கலாம் எனவும், 400 கோடி ஆண்டுகளுக்கு முன்னதாக இந்நிகழ்வு ஏற்பட்டிருக்கலாம் எனவும் தெரியவந்துள்ளது. இவ்வெள்ளம் அங்கே பேரழிவை ஏற்படுத்தி இருக்கலாம் !!  

For a Srivaishnavaite, the requirements are simple but specific.  One need not be materialistically rich, one need not possess properties in abundance but should reside in a divyadesam like Thirumala, Thiruvarangam, Thirukachi, Thiruvananthapuram, Thirukurungudi, Thiruvallikkeni or a place associated with our Acaryas like Thirunarayanapuram.  When one owns a measurable piece of land in a place associated with Emperuman, at least for some other purpose, one would be forced to visit the place quite often and have darshan of Emperuman under that pretext.  If one is associated with those doing kainkaryam at various divyadesams, the possibilities of darshan of Emperuman increases manifold.    

 

Today 26.11.2020 is Revathi in the month of Karthigai – in normal days, there would have been chinna mada veethi purappadu of Sri Ranganathar for every Revathi nakshathiram. At Thiruvallikkeni, there is separate sannathi of Sri Vedavalli thayar and Srimannadhar (Sri Ranganathar).  Vedavalli grew up in the ashram of Bhrigu maharishi at Brindharanyam and was married to Sri Ranganathar on Suddha makha dwadasi  (Feb – Mar).  Other than  monthly purappadu on REvathi nakshathiram,  there occurs 5 day Pallava uthsavam that  culminates on Punguni uthiram day.  Today is  ‘Kaisika Ekadasi’ too – there would be grand purappadu of Sri Parthasarathi perumal on this day. Sadly, the ways of the changing World has made it that there is no purappadu.

பாரில்நின் பாதமூலம் பற்றிலேன் பரம மூர்த்தி

காரொளி வண்ணனே என் கண்ணனே கதறுகின்றேன்

ஆருளர்க் களைகணம்மா அரங்கமா நகருளானே.

 

Thondaradipodi Azhwar in his emotive address to Lord Ranganatha laments his misfortune of not having born in divyadesams; has no relatives, nothing to claim for and have acquaintance with the place of the Lord.  Oh Lord of dark radiance, I have not even secured your feet – I scream and call your names and there can be none other that the Great Lord of Thiruvarangam ~ Lord Ranganatha who owns the Universe and resides at Srirangam (described as ‘Arangamaanagar’) who can protect me…
