Karthigai Masapravesam 2024

November 16 is the 320th day of the year (321st in leap years) in the Gregorian calendar; 45 days remain until the end of the year.

Tiberius Julius Caesar Augustus - was Roman emperor from AD 14 until 37. He succeeded his stepfather Augustus, the first Roman emperor. Tiberius was born in Rome this day in 42 BC to Roman politician Tiberius Claudius Nero and his wife, Livia Drusilla. In 38 BC, Tiberius's mother divorced his father and married Augustus. Following the untimely deaths of Augustus's two grandsons and adopted heirs, Gaius and Lucius Caesar, Tiberius was designated Augustus's successor. Prior to this, Tiberius had proved himself an able diplomat, and one of the most successful Roman generals: his conquests of Pannonia, Dalmatia, Raetia, and (temporarily) parts of Germania laid the foundations for the empire's northern frontier.

Gustavus Adolphus (1594 – 1632), was King of Sweden from 1611 to 1632, and is credited with the rise of Sweden as a great European power.  During his reign, Sweden became one of the primary military forces in Europe during the Thirty Years' War, helping to determine the political and religious balance of power in Europe. He was formally and posthumously given the name Gustavus Adolphus the Great   by the Riksdag of the Estates in 1634.

The Battle of Lützen, fought on this day in  1632,  is considered one of the most important battles of the Thirty Years' War. Led by the Swedish king Gustavus Adolphus, an Allied army primarily composed of troops from Sweden, Saxony, and Hesse-Kassel, narrowly defeated an Imperial force under Albrecht von Wallenstein. Both sides suffered heavy casualties, with Gustavus himself among the dead.

The Holy Child of La Guardia is a folk saint in Spanish Roman Catholicism and the subject of a medieval blood libel in the town of La Guardia in the central Spanish province of Toledo (Castile–La Mancha). On this day in 1491 an auto-da-fé was held outside of Ávila that ended in the public execution of several Jews and conversos. The suspects had confessed under torture to murdering a child. Among the executed were Benito García, the converso who initially confessed to the murder.  However, no body was ever found and there is no evidence that a child disappeared or was killed; because of contradictory confessions, the court had trouble coherently depicting how events possibly took place.  The child's very existence is also disputed.

The Estonian Sovereignty Declaration, [Declaration on the Sovereignty of the Estonian SSR (Deklaratsioon Eesti NSV suveräänsusest)] , was issued on this day in 1988 during the Singing Revolution in then Soviet-occupied Estonia. The declaration asserted Estonia's sovereignty and the supremacy of the Estonian laws over the laws of the Soviet Union.  Estonia's newly elected parliament also laid claim to all natural resources: land, inland waters, forests, mineral deposits and to the means of industrial production, agriculture, construction, state banks, transportation, municipal services, etc. within Estonia's borders.

Icelandic Language Day is a festival celebrated on 16 November each year in Iceland to celebrate the Icelandic language. This date was chosen to coincide with the birthday of the Icelandic poet Jónas Hallgrímsson.

The International Day for Tolerance is an annual observance day declared by UNESCO in 1995 to generate public awareness of the dangers of intolerance. It is observed on 16 November. Every year various conferences and festivals are organized in the occasion of International Day for Tolerance. Among them, "Universal Tolerance Cartoon Festival" in Drammen, Norway which organized an International Cartoon Festival in 2013.

Sir John Ambrose Fleming FRS [1849-1945]   was an English electrical engineer and physicist who invented the first thermionic valve or vacuum tube, designed the radio transmitter with which the first transatlantic radio transmission was made, and also established the right-hand rule used in physics.  In mathematics and physics, the right-hand rule is a convention and a mnemonic, utilized to define the orientation of axes in three-dimensional space and to determine the direction of the cross product of two vectors, as well as to establish the direction of the force on a current-carrying conductor in a magnetic field. In 1904, working for the Marconi company to improve transatlantic radio reception, Fleming invented the first thermionic vacuum tube, the two-electrode diode, which he called the oscillation valve, for which he received a patent on this day in 1904. It became known as the Fleming valve. The Supreme Court of the United States later invalidated the patent because of an improper disclaimer and, additionally, maintained the technology in the patent was known art when filed.  This invention of the vacuum tube is often considered to have been the beginning of electronics.  Fleming's diode was used in radio receivers and radars for many decades afterwards, until it was superseded by solid state electronic technology more than 50 years later.

Nothing of the above may greatly enthuse us – today 16th Nov. 2024 (Sat) heralds the birth of Karthigai month – the month whence we will celebrate Thirukarthigai deepam and sarrumurai vaibhavams of Thirumangai Mannan & Thiruppanazhwar.

Today at Thiruvallikkeni divyadesam, Sri Parthasarathi perumal had siriya mada veethi purappadu on the occasion of Karthigai masapirappu. Here are some photos of the purappadu.

Karthigai Rohini purappadu 2024 ~ கறவா மடநாகு

ஆவினம் தெரியும் !  .. ..

To us Cow is holy -  Cow is the foster mother of the human race. Right from very ancient times, the thoughts of humanity  turned to this kindly and beneficent creature as one of the chief sustaining forces of human life.

Cattle (Bos taurus) are large, domesticated, bovid ungulates widely kept as livestock. They are prominent modern members of the subfamily Bovinae and the most widespread species of the genus Bos. Mature female cattle are called cows and mature male cattle are bulls.  Domestic cattle belong to the genus Bos and the species taurus and indicus. All British and European cattle breeds, such as Angus, Hereford, Holstein, Shorthorn and Simmental, belong to the taurus species. The humped cattle of tropical countries, such as Brahman and Africander, belong to the indicus species. They are also called Zebu or "eared" breeds.

India’s cow’s milk (Kshira) is considered wholesome for all living creatures. It is sweet, oily, cooling, lactation-promoting, refreshing, restorative, strengthening, and Medhya (a nervine tonic). It is sedative, purifying, thirst-quenching, and promotes good digestion. Cow’s milk has ten properties: Madhura (sweet), Sheeta (cooling), Mridu (soft), Snigdha (oily), Bahala (viscous), Shlakshna (smooth), Pichchila (sticky), Guru (heavy), Manda (slow), and Prasanna (pure). These same qualities are found in Ojas, which is described in Ayurveda as a vital substance that maintains strength and immunity in the body. Therefore, cow’s milk increases Ojas and is said to be the foremost among vitalizers and rejuvenators.

Bos taurus (European cattle) descended from the Auroch that lived in Northern Europe. They were domesticated as early in the Neolithic age and have been kept as livestock ever since. Dairy farming has been part of agriculture for thousands of years. Dairy cows are bred specifically to produce large quantities of milk.

Wonder how and when they sleep ?  - the  average sleep time of a domestic cow is about 4 hours a day. Cattle do have a stay apparatus, but do not sleep standing up; they lie down to sleep deeply.  The stay apparatus is an arrangement of muscles, tendons, and ligaments that work together so that an animal can remain standing with virtually no muscular effort. It is best known as the mechanism by which horses can enter a light sleep while still standing up.  The effect is that an animal can distribute its weight on three limbs while resting a fourth in a flexed, non-weight-bearing position. The animal can periodically shift its weight to rest a different leg, and thus all limbs are able to be individually rested, reducing overall wear and tear. The relatively slim legs of certain large mammals, such as horses and cows, would be subject to dangerous levels of fatigue if not for the stay apparatus.

Astral Vulture Crimson Plumage ~ கருட சேவை.

Genshin Impact fans have plenty to look forward to with the proposed  release of Version 5.2 on Nov 20, 2024. There are four powerful weapons added in this update, with one being offered for free, and it will depend on flagship events for the other three. These weapons would  redefine character builds, hosting great potent effects and tailored bonuses both for signature users and flexible team compositions.

One among them is : ‘Astral Vulture's Crimson Plumage (5-Star Bow)’ - tailored for Chasca, Anemo characters make good combinations with it, to trigger Swirl reactions.  Genshin Impact is a 2020 action role-playing video game.  The game features an anime-style open world environment and an action-based battle system using elemental magic and character-switching. A free-to-play game monetized through gacha game mechanics, Genshin Impact is updated regularly using the games as a service model; it was originally released for Android, iOS, PlayStation 4, and Windows, followed by PlayStation   with an Xbox Series X/S version coming in November 2024.

Genshin Impact takes place in the fantasy world of Teyvat, home to seven nations, each of which is tied to a different element and ruled by a different God (archon). The story follows the Traveller, an interstellar adventurer who, at the start of the game, is separated from their twin sibling after the two land in Teyvat. Thereafter, the Traveller journeys across the nations of Teyvat in search of the lost sibling, accompanied by their guide, Paimon. Along the way, the two befriend myriad individuals, become involved in the affairs of its nations, and begin to unravel the mysteries of the land.

Physical appearance is the main way most birders identify different bird species, and understanding the differences between bird plumages is critical for proper identification. Plumage maturation in many birds  is an important clue to temporal patterns in their complex social system.   Plumage,  is the collective feathered covering of a bird. It provides protection, insulation, and adornment and also helps streamline and soften body contours, reducing friction in air and water.

Of the many, Breeding plumage,  is the most brilliant, colorful plumage for many bird species, and it is displayed during the courtship season when birds are trying to attract mates. It is most often the males that develop bold breeding plumage, and these feathers may involve extraordinary colors or unusual shapes such as long streamers.

Plumage (from Latin pluma 'feather') is a layer of feathers that covers a bird and the pattern, colour, and arrangement of those feathers. The pattern and colours of plumage differ between species and subspecies and may vary with age classes. Within species, there can be different colour morphs. The placement of feathers on a bird is not haphazard but rather emerges in organized, overlapping rows and groups, and these feather tracts are known by standardized names.

This evening MA Narasimhan showed me a rare Garuda vahana vigraham of  from his collection – the rare Seva of  Perumal with Ubayanachimar on Garuda vahanam, was enthralling and the plumage of the Garuda was exceptionally attractive.  Thanks to Mr MA Narasimhan for showing this artifact and allowing it to be photographed.
