Thiruvellarai Sri Pundareekakshar Thirukovil : ஆதிவெள்ளறை திவ்யதேசம்


சமீபத்தில் 24.5.2017 அன்று திருச்சியில் இருந்து துறையூர் போகும் வழியில் உள்ள திருவெள்ளறை திவ்யதேசம் சேவிக்கும் பாக்கியம் அமைந்தது. திருப் புண்டரீகாக்ஷ  பெருமாள்கோவில் ஒரு பெரிய அழகான கோவில்.  இக்கோயில், வெண்பாறைகளான (வெள்ளறை = வெண்பாறை) குன்றின் மேல் அமைந்துள்ளதால், இத்தலத்திற்கு வேதகிரி என்ற பெயரும் உண்டு. இத் திருத்தலம் ஸ்ரீரங்கம் கோயிலை விட பழமை வாய்ந்ததாகக் கருதப்படுவதால், ஆதிவெள்ளறை என்றும் அறியப்படுகிறது.  கோயில் கோட்டை போல் அமைக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது.




Here is something on temple – divyadesam of Thiruvellarai, situate around 25 kms away from Srirangam.  On the way to Thuraiyur from Trichy / Srirangam tollgate via mannachanallur.   This is a huge temple – much like a fortress.  A tall imposing unfinished gopuram is in the vanguard.  As some renovation work is on, now we have to enter the temple through eastern gate and behind the half gopuram,  there is another Gopuram and prakaram.  The exteriors of the fortress look so neat and clean, with flowering plants. In fact it is so one with nature that there were so many monkeys, parrots, cuckoos, and .. .. many peacocks too . 



There is Periya thiruvadi sannathi on the banks of Thirukulam before which dwajastham and ‘Nazhi kettan vasal’ exists. Once you enter the precincts, there are two gates coinciding with the movement of Sun known as ‘Utharanayanam’ and ‘Dakshinayanam’.  One of the gate is open alternately for 6 months cycle. This is a collaged photo taken on two different occasion and hence both are seen open !


The Lord here is Pundarikakshar in standing posture, also known as Senthamaraikkannan.  There are so many intricately carved figurines on the wall of the main sannathi.  There are thousands of devas.  Suryan and Chandiran are showering ven samaram.  Garudazhwar and Adhiseshasan are standing on either sides.  Markendeya maharishi and Booma devi are in sitting posture on either sides.  Perumal is beautiful Sri PundariKakshar (Senthamarai Kannan)   His consort is Pankajavalli.  Legend has it that this temple was constructed by Sibi Chakravarthi of Raghu vamsam, predating even Lord Rama. 

On the left side of the pond as you stand facing the dwajastham, there is thayar sannathi of Sengamalavalli Nachiyar.  Sri Chakrathazhwar in beautiful form is there in the next sannathi.  On the prakaram, there is Anjaneyar, a special form as his eyes are so special, would appear as He is seeing us directly.  Two acharyas – Uyyakkondar and Engalazhwaan were born  at this divyadesam. 

The Manavala Mamunigal sannathi on the outer precincts appears so neat and majestic.  Outside the temple, in front of the mottai gopuram is the sannathi of Emperumanar.

சமீபத்தில் மறுபடி திருவெள்ளறை திவ்யதேசம் சேவிக்கும் பாக்கியம் கிடைத்தது.   பிரம்மாண்டமான மதில்கள் உடைய கோட்டை போன்ற பெரிய கோவில்.  பிரகாரம் சுத்தமாகவும் மணம் கமழும் பூக்களை உடைய நந்தவனத்துடன் மிளிர்கிறது.  கோவில் வாசலில் ஒரு பெரிய மொட்டை கோபுரம் உள்ளது.  இங்கே புதுப்பிக்கும் பணி  நடைபெறுவதால், கிழக்கு கோபுரம் வழியாக உள்  செல்கிறோம்.  சுற்றி வந்து,  பாதி முடிந்த நிலையில் உள்ள  கோபுரத்தை தாண்டி உள்ளே செல்ல மற்றொரு கோபுரம், திருக்குளம், பலிபீடம் த்வஜஸ்தம்பம் ஆகியன உள்ளன.  இந்த பலி பீடத்திற்கு கூட விசேஷ திருமஞ்சனம் நடைபெறுமாம்.





த்வஜஸ்தம்பத்தை  சேவித்து  உள்ளே  சென்றால்  பெருமாளின்  அழகான வரைபடம் உள்ளது.   பிரதட்சிணமாக சென்றால் 'தட்சிணாயனம் உத்திராயணம்' என இரண்டு வாசல்கள்.  வைகாசி மாதம் ஆதலால் உத்திராயண படிக்கட்டுகள் ஏறி மேலே சென்றால்   அழகான  நின்ற  திருக்கோலத்தில்  சேவை சாதிக்கும்  புண்டரீகாக்ஷன் - செந்தாமரைக்கண்ணன் பெருமாள் எழுந்து அருளி உள்ளார்.  நின்ற திருக்கோலத்தில் நெடிய   பெருமாள்  மார்கண்டேய மகரிஷிக்கும் பூமா தேவிக்கும் சேவை அருளும் பெருமாள்.  பெருமாளுக்கு சூரியசந்திரர்கள் வெண்சாமரம் வீச;  அருகில் கருட ஆழ்வாரும் ஆதிசேஷனும் நின்ற  திருக்கோலத்திலும் மார்கண்டேய மகரிஷியும் பூமாதேவியும் மண்டியிட்டு அமர்ந்தும்  பெருமாளை வணங்கிக்கொண்டு உள்ளனர்.    புண்டரீகாக்ஷ பெருமாள் உத்சவருடன்  பங்கஜவல்லி தாயார் உள்ளார்.  பெருமாள் சன்னதி அருகே வலது புறம் மிக அழகாக எல்லா ஆழ்வார்களும் மறு புறத்தில் ஆசார்யர்களும் எழுந்துஅருளி உள்ளனர்.



கீழே புஷ்கரிணிக்கு  இடது புறத்தில் தாயார் சன்னதி பெரியதாக  உள்ளது.   தாயார் செங்கமலவல்லி என்ற  திருநாமத்துடன்   தனிக்கோவில்  நாச்சியார் - அழகாக சேவை சாதிக்கிறார்.   சக்கரத்தாழ்வார், ஆண்டாள், உடையவர் ஆகியோருக்கு   தனிச்சன்னிதிகள் உள்ளன. இங்கு உள்ள சிறிய திருவடி ஆஞ்சநேயர் மிகவும் விசேஷம்.  மூலவரின் திருக்கண்கள் நம்மை நேரே நோக்குவது போல உள்ளன.  வெளிப்பிரகாரத்தில் நம் ஆசார்யர் மணவாள மாமுனிகள் சன்னதி புதுப்பொலிவுடன் திகழ்கிறது.  கோவிலுக்கு வெளியில் மொட்டை கோபுரத்துக்கு எதிரில் எம்பெருமானார் சன்னதி உள்ளது.






இந்த திவ்ய தேசத்தில் திவ்யகந்த, க்ஷீரபுஷ்கரிணிகள், மணிகர்ணிகா என்று ஏழு தீர்த்தங்கள் மதிலுக்குள்ளாகவே அமைந்துள்ளனவாம். பெரியாழ்வார் தனது பெரியாழ்வார் திருமொழியில் கண்ணனை காப்பிட அழைக்கும் பாசுரத்தில் "சதுரர்கள் வெள்ளறை நின்றாய்,  அந்தியம் போதிதுவாகும்  அழகனே! காப்பிட வாராய்" என  பத்து பாடல்கள்  மங்களாசாசனம்  செய்துள்ளார்.   திருமங்கை ஆழ்வார்  இத்திருத்தலத்தை பற்றி பத்து பாசுரங்கள் சிறப்பித்துள்ளார். ஐந்தாம் பத்து - மூன்றாம் திருமொழி - வென்றி மாமழுவேந்தி முன் மண்மிசை மன்னரை மூவெழுகால் கொன்ற தேவ ! ..................  தென்றல் மாமணம் கமழ்தர வரு திருவெள்ளறை நின்றானே !  பத்தாவது  பாடலில்   " மஞ்சுலா மணி மாடங்கள் சூழ் திருவெள்ளறை அதன் மேய ...............  எஞ்சலின்றி நின்று ஏத்த வல்லார் இமையோர்க்கு அரசு ஆவர்களே "  என மங்களாசாசனம் பண்ணி உள்ளார்.

Thiruvallikkeni Vasanthothsavam day 1 : 2017

George Macartney,  would often be  remembered for his observation following Britain's success in the Seven Years War and subsequent territorial expansion at the Treaty of Paris that Britain now controlled "a vast Empire, on which the sun never sets".   Macartney was the Governor of Madras  from 1781 to 1785. During his tenure as governor, renovation and strengthening of the walls of Fort St. George was commenced after the siege of Lally and completed in 1783.  He arrived at Madras shortly after the outbreak of England Holland war and he rendered all the assistance in his power for securing the capture of Sadras, Pulicat, Nagapattinam and other Dutch possessions on the Coromandel Coast.  According to James Mills, he set one of the finest examples of elevating a servant of the King to a high office in that country.  That is colonial  history of Madras  ~ to us things are far different ~ Triplicane existed far earlier than the formation of Madras and arrival of British and We eternally are servants to our lovely Lord Sriman Narayana.




Now is the time for Vasantha Uthsavam.    It would amaze one to understand the significance of each Uthsavam and the care with which our elders have designed them.  There are palaces [bungalows] specially built for providing rest to Perumal on different occasions ~ at Thiruvallikkeni, there is Thavana Uthsava Bungalow situated in Thulasinga Perumal Koil Street, Komutti Bungalow in Peyalwar Koil Street.  Of the many lanes and by-lanes, is Venkatrangam (Pillai) Street, running parallel to the Beach Road.  The future generation may not get to know that these gates for many decades opened to have the Lord enter a big spacious sprawling pleasant premises, replete with flower plants, little ponds, trees, a big well with steps for walking inside.  It was the ** Vasantha Uthsava Bungalow **  where Sri Parthasarathi would visit for Vasantha Uthsavam, Kodai Uthsavam, Vijayadasami, 5th day and 7th day of Brahmothsavam [of Sri Parthasarathi and Sri Azhagiya Singar] ~  have had darshan of Perumal inside the sprawling premises around which there was so much space. sadly, it  is no longer there……..






‘Vasantham ‘ is a season – a pleasant one at that.  Vasantham corresponds to Spring season.  While they have only 4 seasons in the West, we have six seasons.  Here it is Vasantha Ruthu also known as ‘Ilavenil’  ~ வசந்தம் என்பது பருவம். வசந்த ருது எனவும் இளவேனில் எனவும் பெயர் பெற்றது இது. சித்திரை. வைகாசி இரண்டையும் இளவேனில் என்பார்கள். வசந்தகாலம் எல்லோரும் ஆவலுடன் எதிர்பார்க்கும் பருவம். தளிர்க்கும், பூக்கும் தாவரங்கள்,பாடித் திரியும் பறவைகள் என கூர்ந்து நோக்கினால் மகிழ்ச்சியாகவும், வியப்பாகவும் இருக்கும் காலம் இது.

Spring is a season. We have seasons because the earth takes a year to move round the sun, which gives us light and warmth, and because the earth tilts at an angle of 23.5 degrees.  Spring is the season when one can see lots of flowers blossoming.

Elsewhere the Spring does not appear all that good for birds and animals.  Reports suggest that hunters in Illinois harvested a preliminary statewide total of 15,719 wild turkeys during the 2017 Spring Turkey Season,  then in US they moved from feathers to fur.  Fresh on the heels of the spring turkey season turns spring squirrel hunting.  Hunting otherwise means death-knell for the hapless birds and animals.

Canberra Arts Gallery returns stolen idol of Lord Narasimha

As Preserver of the Universe, the Hindu god Vishnu appears in one of his many forms whenever he is needed to restore order to the world. In this image, Vishnu is depicted as the cosmic monarch. He is flanked by his consort Lakshmi, goddess of prosperity and beauty, and Sarasvati, goddess of arts and learning. Lakshmi holds a flywhisk while Sarasvati plays a stringed musical instrument. Denoting his divine status, the crowned Vishnu is represented with four arms, standing on a lotus. In his hands he holds a conch shell representing the power of creation; a mace to intimidate those who oppose the truth; and a discus, the symbol of destruction and cosmic order. His fourth hand is extended in a gesture of charity. Vishnu’s powerful eyes encourage an important aspect of Hindu image worship—darshan (seeing)—when the divinity and devotee exchange eye contact. – Can you imagine this Idol’s origin and where it is kept now ???

Canberra is the capital of Australia. The city is located at the northern end of the Australian Capital Territory,  280 km (170 mi) south-west of Sydney, and 660 km (410 mi) north-east of Melbourne.  The National Gallery of Australia is the national art museum of Australia as well as the largest art museum in the country, holding more than 166,000 works of art. Established in 1967 by the Australian government as a national public art museum, it holds the nation’s most important and comprehensive collection of Asian art. Sculptures, textiles, paintings, prints and manuscripts, all of exceptional quality, are displayed in three main spaces dedicated to Art of the Indian subcontinent.  The Art of the Indian Subcontinent gallery houses a treasury of rare and valuable works of art spanning nearly two thousand years of creativity.

Times of India of date and other media report that the Nation  has regained possession of an idol from Tamil Nadu, estimated to be at least 1,045 years old, stolen and smuggled out by a cartel led by infamous idol trafficker Subhash Kapoor.  National Gallery of Australia (NGA), Canberra, returned the Narasimee idol -an artefact of priceless historicity but one that experts currently value at close to Rs 2 crore in the underground market -to India recently. Kapoor, currently facing trial and lodged in Trichy Central Prison for looting and smuggling ancient relics out of the country , sold the idol he took from Vriddhagirisvarar Temple, a shrine to Lord Shiva, in Vriddhachalam, a town around 200km south of Chennai, to the gallery in 2005 for $275,000 (the equivalent of Rs 1.49 crore at the time).

Inspector general of police, idol wing, A G Ponmanickavel described the idol as "a rare piece", even among the many exquisite artefacts in temples across the country.  Investigators with the state's CB-CID idol wing said Kapoor, who police believed operated a $100-million international smuggling racket, personally conducted a reconnaissance of the temple before commissioning a gang of thieves to loot the statue from the temple in 2002. The gang used cranes to lift the statue out of the temple, investigators said. "Kapoor's gang sold the artefact along with five other stone idols of Hindu deities from the temple in Vriddhachalam an investigating officer said. "The temple's caretakers did not report the offence to police immediately." The idol wing sleuths, with the assistance of the Australian Federal Police, are trying to trace a Pillayar idol, an Ishtashakthi idol, a Gnanasakthi idol and a Giriyasakthi idol, which Kapoor purloined at the same time as the Narasimee artefact.

"The artefacts, weighing a total of 210 kg, travelled a long distance," the officer said. "We believe the Narasimee idol went through at least three continents before ending up in its final destination." The officer said Kapoor hid the idol for some time at his Art of the Past gallery in Manhattan, New York. The idol wing police discovered that the Virudhachalam police had in 2013 registered a case pertaining to the theft of the Narasimee idol. Though the then joint commissioner of Tamil Nadu Hindu religious & charitable endowments (HR&CE) department reported the theft of only one idol, an Arthanareeswarar stone idol worth Rs 1.66 crore, idol wing sleuths found that five others idols were also missing from the temple.

"After stealing the ancient artefacts from the temple, the gang replaced them with fakes in connivance, we believe, with former caretakers of the temple," the investigating officer said. "The caretakers, now in Vriddhagirisvarar Temple in Virudhachalam, told investigators that they were unaware of the theft. They believed the idols in the temple were originals till the idol wing police traced the genuine Arthanareeswarar idol." "The gang used cranes to transport the idols to various vehicles from the temple, which is spread over several acres," he said. "Kapoor transported the idols to Chennai and then to Mumbai. He sent it to New York via Hong Kong and London."

Kapoor fabricated forged provenances for the Narasimee idol and sold it in what he presented as a bona fide deal to National Gallery of Australia in Canberra. Police earlier arrested suspects in the theft of the idols, Oomai Durai and Anna Durai. They admitted to stealing the idols from the temple and transporting them to Mumbai. Other suspects, Nachu alias Lakshmi Narasimhan, and two antique dealers from Mumbai, Vallabh Prakash and Aditi Prakash, took part in the heist. Narasimhan helped make the fake idols that the gang replaced the originals with.  Investigators will produce the idol before a Virudhachalam judicial magistrate's court and keep it at Nageswararswamy Temple, an icon centre, in Kumbakonam.

The Vishnu idol of dimensions - 162.5 h x 80.0 w x 34.0 d cm that you saw at the start of the post dates to Pala dynasty (8th-early 12th centuries).  It is lying in Canberra Arts Gallery and details put up takes it to  Shialdi village, Dhaka, Bangladesh where it was bought by Dr David Nalin, 1967 or 1968; sold  through art dealer Peter Marks, New York - to the National Gallery of Australia, Canberra, 1989 for USD 675,000

There are pristine Temple all over India in many villages – most  temples attract huge crowds and devotees are contributing lakhs of Rupees to Temples…….. but  the money does not go to God or to the Temple or for any activity connected with religious purpose !!     The idols were sculpted intricately not for being admired for their beauty but were ‘the ones meant for worship’ in the big temples decorated by them…………… sadly some are not in their designated places. Some are lying as showpieces in Art galleries; some whether recovered or even taken away from the temples are kept in some other Temples in a nearby bigger city.    The Govt Dept would conveniently say that it is not safe to keep the idols – the HRCE & Govt which takes away the revenue does not feel the need to protect.  The primary purpose of divinity of the idol is not kept when it is kept in display elsewhere without the routine rituals.  Sadly, it  does not augur well for the Temple or the agama sastras. It pains.

Thiruvallikkeni Vaikasi Amavasai purappadu 2017 : வீதியார வருவானை, கண்டோமே

Today 25th May 2o17 is Vaikasi Amavasai.  Moon attracts ~  it waxes and wanes, can it be wonderful and biggest on a day when it is not to be seen ?

In astronomy, new moon is the first phase of the Moon, when it orbits are  not seen from the Earth;  the moment when the Moon and the Sun have the same ecliptical longitude.  The Moon is not visible  at this time except when it is seen in silhouette during a solar eclipse when it is illuminated by earthshine.  A lunation or synodic month is the mean (average) time from one new moon to the next. The average length of a lunation is 29.530588 days (or 29 days, 12 hours, 44 minutes, and 3 seconds).

In recent years, the year’s largest supermoon has been a full moon.  But not in 2017. The moon is  new today,  on May 25, and it’ll swing to lunar perigee – and be closest to Earth for all of 2017 – about a quarter day later.  Earthsky.org writes that there is no comparably close alignment of a full moon with lunar perigee this year. So – for the first time since the year 2009 – it’ll be a new moon (not a full moon) that presents the year’s closest and largest supermoon.

We say “largest” despite the fact that we won’t see this moon. We can’t see it because every new moon travels across the sky with the sun during the day.  Astronomers sometimes call the year’s nearest perigee moon a proxigee moon. The 2017 proxigee, or closest perigee, moon will lie 357,207 km (221,958 miles) away. That gives 2017 another first since 2009. It’ll be the first time since 2009 that the centers of the Earth and moon will not come closer than 357,000 km (221,830 miles).

Acharyar Ramanuja at Thiruper Nagar (Koviladi / Appakudathan) divyadesam


Feb 2017  provided me an opportunity to visit this serene Divyadesam nearer Thiruvarangam  ~ the “Kovil” – for all Sri Vaishnavaites.

The Chola King  Karikala has a rich legend and anecdotal significance in Sangam literature.  The Kallanai [literally one made of huge stones] ~ the Grand Anicut, is an ancient dam built on the Kaveri River. It is located about 20 km from Tiruchirapalli. Reported to have been built around 2ndCentury by the Chozha king, it stands as a proud exhibit as Chola engineering skills.  The purpose of the Kallanai was to divert the waters of the Kaveri across the fertile delta region for irrigation via canals.  Certainly much water has flown under the dam built as a barrier using unhewn stones by the King who is praised to have irrigated 69000 acres of land – the British in later period changed its structure and it looks much different now, sadly not much of water flowing due to conflict with the neighbour.

இனியன அமுது செய்விக்கையில் சிறந்தது ஆக  உரைப்பது "அப்பம்" எனும் பிரசாதம்.

Appam [Neyyappam] is a delicacy -  it is a  rice pancakes fried in ghee. A batter of pouring consistency is made of rice flour and jaggery.  Cardamom and dried ginger are added for flavour.  There is a legend  associating the temple with this prasadam.  There are many ways of reaching this Divyadesam ~ from Thiruvaiyaru ~ from Thiru Anbil and from Srirangam via the famous Grand Anicut.

In one way of grouping significant temples there is the ‘Pancharanga Kshetrams’  five sacred temples dedicated to Lord Ranganatha situate on the banks of the Kaveri River.  Srirangapatnam is  called the Adi Ranga [could be in the order of its location in the route of Kaveri and not to be the oldest or in antiquity];  the great Thiruvarangam;  Sri  Parimala Ranganatha Perumal Temple [Thiru Inthalur / Mayavaram / Mayiladuthurai] ; Sri Sarangapani temple at Kumbakonam and this one on the banks of kaveri variously known as ‘Koviladi / Appakudathan’ and in divyaprabantham denoted as “Thirupper Nagar”.

The Moolavar of this Sthalam is Appakkudathaan. He is also called as "Appalaa Ranganathan". Prathyaksham for Ubamannyu and Parasarar(Bhattar). Moolavar in Kidantha Kolam [reclining posture]  and in bhujanga sayanam facing west direction. Thayar is “Kamalavalli Nachiyar” – the sannathi also situate on the elevated portion.. The temple itself  is built on an elevated structure and approached through a fleet of steps. The Rajagopuram (the main gateway) has three tiers and the temple has a precinct around the sanctum.  



From the times of the King fulfilling His wish and earning the blessing, the Lord here is offered ‘Nei appam’ everyday and popularly called “Appakudathan”…. The pot to contain the prasadam is near the hand of the Lord in reclining posture [and not being held in hand as described in some books].  It is stated that the temple has inscriptions from the 18th year of the regime of Aditya Chola.

The temple is  considered as the mukthi stalam [providing salvation].  Sri Periyazhwar, Thirumangai Azhwar, Thirumazhi alwar and Swami Nammalwar have sung praising the Lord at this divyadesam.  The Sanathana Krishnar idol here is believed as preceptor of boon to those who seek to have progeny.

கையிலங்காழி சங்கன் கருமுகில் திருநிறத்தன்,*

பையரவணையான் நாமம் பரவி நான் ய்ந்தவாறே**

                     திருக்கையிலே  திருவாழி திருச்சங்கையுடையவனும்; காளமேகம் போன்ற திருநிறத்தை உடையவனும்; பொய் என்பதே அறியாத மெய்யனும்; தனது திருவடிகளிலே பணிவர்களை,  நித்ய கைங்கரிய நிஷ்டராக ஆக்கிக் கொள்பவனும் ~ ஆன பெருமான் திருவனந்தாழ்வானைப் படுக்கையாக கொண்டு உறையும் திவ்யதேசங்களில் முக்கியமானது திருவரங்கத்துக்கு அருகிலேயே உள்ள "கோவிலடி ~ அப்பக்குடத்தான் எனும் "திருப்பேர்நகர்" திவ்யதேசம். மலர்ந்த தாமரைகளை உடைய நீர்நிலையும் அடர்ந்த சோலைகளையும் உடைய திருப்பேர்நகரானது திவ்யநாமத்தை உச்சரிக்கும் நம் அனைவருக்கும் எல்லா வளங்களும் கிட்டும் என திருமங்கைமன்னன் அறுதி இட்டு உரைக்கிறார்.
