Leap Year Swathi 2o24 - நறவேற்றான் பாகத்தான் பாற்கடலுளான்

இன்று 29.2.2024 மாசி ஸ்வாதி - திருவல்லிக்கேணி திவ்யதேசத்தில் ஸ்ரீதெள்ளியசிங்கர் சிறிய மாட வீதி புறப்பாடு கண்டருளினார்.  நறவு என்றால் என்ன தெரியுமா ?  நறவேற்றான்  என்ற சொல்லாடல் மூன்றாம் திருவந்தாதியில் வருகிறது !!

Today’s purappadu has an added significance as it is Leap Year Swathi !

 

Before the independence of India, he became Bombay's Home Minister and was later elected Chief Minister of Bombay state in 1952. Rising in Congress leadership, as a fierce nationalist with anti-corruption leanings, he was at odds with Prime Minister Nehru and his allies, and with Nehru's age and health failing, he was considered as a possible contender for the position of Prime Minister. In 1964 after prime minister's Nehru's death, he was outflanked in the leadership contest by the Nehru's protege, Lal Bahadur Shastri. He was invited but did not join the short lived Shastri cabinet.  In early 1966, the unexpected passing away of Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri after only 18 months in power made him  once again a contender for the top position. However, he was defeated by Nehru's daughter, Indira Gandhi, in the Congress party leadership election by a big margin.  Can you identify this politician who later became our Prime Minister too !!  

2024 is a leap year, meaning Thursday, Feb. 29 is a once-in-every-four-year event. It is an extra day !   During a leap year, which occurs every four years, leap day falls on Feb. 29, giving the shortest month of the year one added day. Since leap years typically happen every four years (although there are some exceptions), our last leap days were in 2020 and 2016, and the next leap year will happen in 2028.  

The amount of days it takes for the Earth to complete a full revolution around the Sun is not a whole number. The 365 days we experience is actually 365.242190 days, according to the National Air and Space Museum. Getting rid of those 0.242190 days adds up. That fraction allows seasons to correctly line up each year. If leap day was left off the calendar, the months during which we normally experience each season would eventually shift. This would impact other aspects of life, such as the growing and harvesting of crops. It is not all - years divisible by 100 but not 400 are skipped, meaning we skipped leap years in 1700, 1800 and 1900 but not 2000. The next leap year we'll skip is quite a ways away, in 2100.  

While Julius Caesar is often credited for originating leap days, he got the idea from the Egyptians. By the third-century BCE, Egyptians followed a solar calendar that spanned 365 days with a leap year every four years, National Geographic reports. In ancient Rome, their calendar varied and included a 23-day intercalary month called "Mercedonius." But it was not a standalone month. Mercedonius was added to February to account for the difference between the Roman year and solar year, according to the History Channel. 

 

'நறவு‘ என்று தேனுக்குப் பெயர்   நறவு என்ற பெயர்ச்சொல்லுக்கு : தேன், கள், நறை, மணம்,  என பல பொருட்கள் உண்டு.  சேரநாட்டில் நறவூர்  எனும்  ஊர், சேர அரசன் ஆடுகோட்பாட்டுச் சேரலாதனின் தலைநகர்.  இது கடலோரத்தில் இருந்த துறைமுகமும் ஆகும்.  

நரசிங்கவுருக்கொண்டு ஹிரண்யாஸுரனுடைய மார்பைப் பிளந்தவனும் சேஷசயனத்தில் திருக்கண் வளர்ந்தருள்பவனும் நான்கு வேதங்களாலும் பிரதிபாதிக்கப்படுபவனும் ஆன ஸ்ரீமந்நாரணனின் புகழ் பாடும் திருமயிலை ஸ்ரீபேயாழ்வார் பாசுரம் இங்கே :  

இவையவன் கோயில் இரணியன தாகம்,

அவைசெய் அரியுருவமானான், – செவி தெரியா

நாகத்தான் நால்வேதத்துள்ளான், நறவேற்றான்

பாகத்தான் பாற்கடலுளான்.  

ஹிரண்யாஸுரனுடைய மார்பை இரு பிளவாக்கி தன் பக்தனை காக்க   நரசிங்கமாகத் தோன்றினவனும், கண்ணையே செவியாகவுடையனாகையாலே தனிப்பட செவி தெரியாமலிருக்கிற ஆதிசேஷனைப் படுக்கையாக வுடையவனும், நான்கு வேதங்களுக்கும் பொருளாயிருப்பவனும்,  தேன்போன்ற கங்கையை ஏற்றுக் கொண்டவனான ருத்ரனைத் திருமேனியின் ஒரு பாகத்திலே உடையவனும், திருப்பாற்கடலில் பள்ளி கொள்பவனுமான  எம்பெருமானுடைய  திருக்கோவில்கள்  கீழ்ப்பாட்டில் சொன்ன திருப்பதிகளாம்.  கீழ்ப்பாட்டில் அநுஸந்தித்த திவ்யஸ்தலங்கள் ஆழ்வார் திருவுள்ளத்தைவிட்டுப் பேராமல் உள்ளதனால், இந்த பாசுரத்தில் அவற்றை நினைவு கூறுகிறார். நறவேற்றான் – ‘நறவு‘ என்று தேனுக்குப் பெயர், உவகையாகுபெயரால் கங்கையைச் சொல்லுகிறது.  

Feb. 29 is the rarest birthday someone could have. Still, at least 5 million people celebrate their birthday on leap day, according to the History Channel. Your odds of being born on Feb. 29 are one-in-1,461. The grand  politician detailed in para 2 is Morarji.  Morarji Ranchhodji Desai  was born on 29^th Feb 1896 and lived till 10/4/1995. He became the 4th Prime Minister of India between 1977 and 1979 leading the government formed by the Janata Party.
