Sri Andal Neeratta Uthsavam 2024 - foster child ! - “ஒருத்தி மகனாய் பிறந்து ஓரிரவில்"

How uncomfortable or difficult life can be ! – and when would one start experiencing difficulties.  Bhagwan Sree Krishna had difficulties aplenty – His birth occurred in the prison cell at Mathura and as it rained so heavily, Vasudeva took Him on his head and crossed Yamuna river that was in spates.  So a child not even a day’s old had to move from natural parents to foster parents ! – Fostering ..  ! what ?! – it is impossible to understand things having Western concepts in mind !

பக்தி காவியங்களிலே திருப்பாவை ஒரு உயர்ந்த இடத்தைக் கொண்டது.   ஆண்டாள் நீராட்ட உத்சவத்தில்  நான்காம் நாள் இன்று (10.1.2024)-  திருப்பாவையில், இன்றைய நாள் பாசுரம் -    

“ஒருத்தி மகனாய் பிறந்து ஓரிரவில் ஒருத்தி மகனாய் ஒளித்து வளர” !!

Elsewhere in USA,  Oregon’s child welfare agency has been in and out of court since 2019, defending against a class action lawsuit brought on behalf of every child in foster care in the state. The suit was filed by Disability Rights Oregon and the national advocacy group A Better Childhood. 

To understand the western concept I a simpler term,  a foster child is a minor placed in state custody. Foster children are placed with state-licensed adults that care for the child rather than a guardian or parent. Youth may enter the foster system for many reasons, but the most common include abuse, neglect, or being in an unsafe home environment.   The State-licensed adult, cares for the child in place of their parent or guardian. Children often enter the foster care system as a result of an unsafe or unstable home environment.   Other times, parents become unable to care for their children for reasons such as illness, death, or incarceration.  Sometimes as it happens in Western world, parents voluntarily relinquish their parental rights and place their child into foster care. 

Foster children might live in a group home, ward, or in a private home with a foster family.  Some  foster children are fortunate  to  ultimately reunite with their parent or guardian after the issues necessitating the child’s removal are resolved.  Not all are so lucky.   At first glance foster care and adoption may look very similar as in both the cases you are bringing the child home and nurturing him/her, but unlike adoption foster parents don’t have permanency and parental rights over their foster kid. 

பூர்ணாவதாரம் என்று புகழப்படுகின்ற  ஸ்ரீகிருஷ்ணரின் லீலைகளில் மயங்காதவர்கள் யார்? அங்கிங்கெனாதபடி எங்கும் நிறைந்திருக்கும் பரம்பொருளே மண்ணுலகோர் உய்வுறும் வண்ணம் தன் தனிப்பெருங்கருணையால் ஒரு மானிடக் குழந்தையாக தேவகிக்கும் வாசுதேவருக்கும் - கம்சன் சிறைதனிலே  அவதரித்தது  ஒரு அற்புதம் எனின், அன்று கொட்டும் மழையிலே, யமுனை ஆறு வழி விட, ஆதிசேஷன் குடை பிடிக்க, கோகுலம் சென்று  யசோதா நந்தகோபரிடம் வளர்ந்தது ஒரு அத்புதம். தேவகி, வசுதேவர், யசோதை, நந்தகோபர் என்று நால்வர் இயற்றிய தவத்துக்கு ஈடு இணையற்ற ஒரே யாதவ ரத்னமாக கண்ணன் பிறந்தான்.   கோதை பிரட்டி தனது திருப்பாவையிலே செப்பியது :  ஒருத்தி மகனாய் பிறந்து ஓரிரவில் ஒருத்தி மகனாய் ஒளித்து வளரத்தரிக்கிலானாகித் தான்தீங்கு நினைத்த கருத்தைப் பிழைப்பித்துக் கஞ்சன் வயிற்றில் நெருப்பென்ன நின்ற நெடுமாலே!

 Of the incarnations of Sriman Narayana,  His descent in human form as Krishna has been glorified as the most accessible and endearing.  Among the Azhwargal, Sri Goda devi [Kothai Piratti @ Andal] is unique and her immortal hymns of Thiruppavai and Nachiyar Thirumozhi, do stand out.  Thiruppavai is on ceremonial austerity [Pavai nonbu] and her singleminded devotion in service to the Lord  is explicitly abundant.  

During the month of Margazhi, Thiruppavai is recited and to each day is attributed one pasuram.  At Thiruvallikkeni divyadesam today [10^th  Jan 2024] is day 4 of Andal Neeratta Uthsavam.  Here is pasuram 25 of Thiruppavai : 

ஒருத்தி மகனாய்ப் பிறந்துஓர் இரவில்* ஒருத்தி மகனாய் ஒளித்து வளரத்*

தரிக்கிலான் ஆகித்தான் தீங்கு நினைந்த* கருத்தைப் பிழைப்பித்துக் கஞ்சன் வயிற்றில்*

நெருப்பென்ன நின்ற நெடுமாலே உன்னை* அருத்தித்து வந்தோம் பறைதருதியாகில்*

திருத்தக்க செல்வமும் சேவகமும் யாம்பாடி* வருத்தமும் தீர்ந்து மகிழ்ந்தேலோர் எம்பாவாய்.

Sri Andal praises the Lord who was born in anonymity as Devaki’s child and overnight moved out of incarceration to grow incognito as Yasodha’s child at Gokulam.  As He grew, he foiled the intent of depot Kamsa.  Andal with her group  pays obeisance  and beseeches upon that Lord to grant measureless wealth and blessed service to Him – the only thing which is capable to ending sorrow and providing eternal rejoice. 

Let us all pray to Goda Devi whose hymns offer us the right guidance and intent to look to the lotus feet of Lord.  Here are some photos taken during today’s morning purappadu.
