Allikkeni Purattasi Rohini 2024 -

This is not Moon but mother Earth !!  (pic credit – NASA - nssdc.gsfc.nasa.gov/imgcat) The crew of Apollo 17 took this photograph of Earth in December 1972 while their spacecraft was traveling between the Earth and the Moon. The orange-red deserts of Africa and Saudi Arabia stand in stark contrast to the deep blue of the oceans and the white of both clouds and snow-covered Antarctica.

The planet that we live known as Earth -  is the third planet from the Sun and the only astronomical object known to harbour life. This is enabled by Earth being an ocean world, the only one in the Solar System sustaining liquid surface water. Almost all of Earth's water is contained in its global ocean, covering 70.8% of Earth's crust. The remaining 29.2% of Earth's crust is land, most of which is located in the form of continental landmasses within Earth's land hemisphere. Most of Earth's land is somewhat humid and covered by vegetation, while large sheets of ice at Earth's polar deserts retain more water than Earth's groundwater, lakes, rivers and atmospheric water combined.

Jörð   is the personification of earth and a goddess in Norse mythology. She is the mother of the thunder god Thor and   partner of Odin. Jörð is attested in Danish history Gesta Danorum, composed in the 12th century by Danish historian Saxo Grammaticus. All of the planets, except for Earth, were named after Greek and Roman Gods and Godesses. The name Earth is an English/German name which simply means the ground.

Earth is the fifth largest planet in the solar system.  Though the sheer size of Earth in metaphorical terms is immeasurable to humanity, the planet's physical size can indeed be calculated.  Earth's widest point is the equator, which runs across the planet's center at zero degrees latitude. This is because Earth is not a perfect sphere; it has a prominence across its center called the equatorial bulge. According to NASA, Earth's radius at the equator is 3,963 miles (6,378 kilometers), while the radius at the poles is 3,950 miles (6,356 km).

Therefore, the diameter of Earth through its center is 7,926 miles (12,756 km). The equatorial circumference of Earth is 24,901 miles (40,075 km). Its diameter (the distance from one side to the other through Earth's center) is 7,926 miles (about 12,756 kilometers).

Today, scientists measure Earth by improving on a method developed by Greek polymath, Eratosthenes, around 250 B.C. Eratosthenes used trigonometry to determine the distance between Aswan and Alexandria by measuring the position of the sun at the same time in both locations. He used this calculation and basic geometry, building on Aristotle's earlier ideas, to calculate the circumference of Earth to within 1% accuracy — staggering for over 2,000 years ago!

This practice formed the basis of geodesy, the science of measuring Earth's size and fundamental properties, such as its geometric shape, its orientation in space, and its gravity field. Pythagoras (570-500 BC) and Aristotle (384-322 BC) had proposed that the Earth was a sphere.  Eratosthenes (276-194 BC) was working as chief librarian at the renowned library in Alexandria, Egypt. He stumbled across interesting reports detailing observations of the sun made by travelers from Syene (Aswan, Egypt). Eratosthenes realized the Sun had to be directly overhead Syene, or at its zenith, on solstice  day. He also knew the Sun was 7 degrees away from the zenith at Alexandria on the solstice (which happens to be about 1/50th of the circumference of a circle). Using simple geometry, Eratosthenes then showed that this implied that the distance from Alexandria to Syene was 1/50th of the Earth’s circumference.

Peyalwar is clear in his advice to the heart : Lord Sriman Narayana is the manifestation of the unlimited earth, vast expanse of sky, the air that circulates, the fire that can take everything and the boundless of sea – we need to do nothing but follow and fall at the lotus feet of Sriman Narayana, who holds the Chakra, that can save the Universe.
