Thiruvallikkeni aka Triplicane
is a famed land… It is a place where religion, nationalistic fervour,
patriotism, sports, education and the individual dignity have interspersed for
the benefit of the State and the larger interests of the Nation. The place acquired
its name from the famed temple pond ‘Kairavini’ – the pond of lilies – thus
becoming ‘Thiru Allik Keni’ – the pond consisting of lily flowers. Our
lives dwell around the Great Sri Parthasarathi Swami Thirukovil which has
existed for thousands of years, sung by Sri PeyAzhwar,
Thirumazhisai Azhwar and Tirumangai Azhwar ~ with inscriptions of Pallava
King - Thanthi Varman dating (779-830).
Triplicane was the seat of
freedom struggle – Balagandhara Thilakar and very many patriotic leaders had
delivered powerful lectures in Triplicane (Thilakar thidal at Marina
beach) and inspired people in the freedom struggle. Mahakavi Subrahmanya
Bharathi lived in Triplicane and from this place freedom struggle
germinated. There are century old educational institutions ~ the
most famous Hindu High School, Presidency College, NK Thirumalachariyar Boys
and Girls High Schools being more prominent.
There are so may famous persons born in this holy place.
There are so many Mantaps
[marriage halls – some new – some century old !] – recent ones would be Sri
Raghavendra Kalyana Mantap; Terapanth bhavan – older ones are Triplicane Fund,
Ahobila Mutt, Yadugiri Yathiraja Mutt – and some like Blue house, Bommai
chathiram, Chenchu lakshmi kalyana mandapam that are no longer in existence.
Today was another interesting
day ~ (18th Sept 2016) – Sri Yadugiri Yathiraja Mutt at 46 East Tank
Square Street, Triplicane was renovated and had noothana samprokshnam – there
was Koil Thiruvaimozhi goshti too. This
is a branch of the mutt at Melukote (Thirunarayanapuram) – mutt having been
established by our great Acharyar Sri Ramanujar. Today His Holiness Srimad
Paramahamsa Sri Sri Yadugiri Yathiraja Narayana Ramanuja Jeeyar Swami blessed
us all with his visit. Here are some
photos taken this morning. Dr MA
Venkatakrishnan Swami is the head of the Committee that undertook
renovations. The hall is now
air-conditioned and boasts of modern amenities mingling with sampradhayam as it
houses sannathi for Perumal and Acharyars.
Auspicious functions like
marriages, upanayanams, seemantham, sasthiapthapoorthi are conducted in this
mantap ~ many of the Triplicanites could happily recall their home functions
having been conducted here. My parents’
marriage took place here on 7th Sept. 1959. Here are some photos taken this morning ~ the
last photo is goshti thuvakkam at Thirunarayanapuram, incidentally in front of
the Sri Yadugiri Yathiraja Mutt at Melukote.
