Today 13th Sept 2021 is 28th day of Avani – partly Anusham (masa thirunakshathiram of Swami Nadhamunigal) and partly Kettai (masa thirunakshathiram of Thondaradipodi azhwar)
For many months now, World is living under the fear of Corona virus named as Covid 19 to ensure that it is no pointer to its place of origin – whether it is under control or not – there is no perfect answer ! – when will it end – there seemingly is no categorical answer. By now we are used to remaining at home, venturing out with mask (!), using sanitizers, liquids for cleaning thyself, dress and everything that we use - humanity perhaps has seen pandemics and killings by humans too .. !! – those who are preaching World now – are no apostles of peace for a century ago occurred dreaded World War that killed millions, followed by another.
World War I was a global war originating in Europe that lasted from 28 July 1914 to 11 November 1918. Contemporaneously known as the Great War, "the war to end all wars", led to the mobilisation of more than 70 million military personnel, including 60 million Europeans, making it one of the largest wars in history, and also one of the deadliest conflicts in history, with an estimated 8.5 million combatant deaths and 13 million civilian deaths as a direct result of the war. Resulting genocides and the related 1918 Spanish flu pandemic caused another 17–100 million deaths worldwide !!
The Battle of Grand Couronné from 4 to 13 Sept 1914, took place in France after the Battle of the Frontiers, at the beginning of the First World War. After the German victories of Sarrebourg and Morhange, pursuit by the German 6th Army (Crown Prince Rupprecht of Bavaria) and the 7th Army, took four days to regain contact with the French and attack to break through French defences on the Moselle. The German offensive began during the night of 3/4 September, against the fortifications of the Grand Couronné on either side of Nancy. Holger Herwig wrote that in September, the 6th Army suffered 28,957 casualties, with 6,687 men killed, despite half the army being en route to Belgium; most lost in the fighting at the Grand Couronné. The 7th Army suffered 31,887 casualties, of which 10,384 men killed. The German army never calculated a definitive casualty list for the fighting in Alsace and Lorraine but the Bavarian official historian Karl Deuringer made a guess of 60 per cent casualties, of which 15 per cent were killed, in the fifty infantry brigades which fought in the region, which would amount to 66,000 casualties, 17,000 killed !!
Reminiscing good things and falling at the feet of Emperuman – margazhi kettai is the star of Thondaradipodi Azhwar and Ani Anusham is the birth star of Sri Nathamunigal.
Sri Nadhamunigal was born in Anusha nakshatra of ‘Ani’ month at Sri Veeranarayanapuram [Kattumannar Kovil]. Sri Nathamuni went on a long pilgrimage that took him to Divya Desams like Mathura, Vrindhavan, and other holy places including Puri. Upon hearing some Srivaishnavaites reciting Thiruvaimozhi pasuram ‘Aaravamuthe’ ~ he followed its trail tracing it to the Thiru Kurugoor; with the divine blessings, collated Sri Nalayira Divyaprabandham and thence onwards these hymns are continually sung in Divyadesams and other Sri Vaishnavaite temples, Dravida Veda.
After him, the Guru
paramparai mantle passed on to Uyyakondar, Manakkal nimbi and thence to
Yamunacharyar @ Aalavandhar, the grandson of Natha Munigal. Nathamunigal
was also a great Bhakti Yogi and practiced the Yoga of eight accessories ( ashtAnga
yoga); he authored the treatise “Yoga Rahasya”. He was also an
exponent of divine music who initiated the ‘singing of divyaprabandham ~
now known as Arayar Sevai’. The seed
for illustrious Sri Vaishnava lore and system was sown by Sri Nathamuni,
germinated in Sri Yamunacharya, attained pinnacle of its glory in Sri Ramanuja
continues to flourish through Sri Vara Vara Muni and his successors.

இனிதாக வந்து மோதி அடிக்க, கொந்தளிக்கிற குளிர்ந்த கடல் போல
பரந்து விரிந்துள்ள திருக்காவேரியிலே தனியே வந்து கண்வளர்ந்தருளி செங்கோல் செலுத்துகிற
புண்டரீகாக்ஷனாய் [தாமரைக்கண்ணன்] எமக்கு தலைவனாய், கொவ்வைக்கனி போன்ற சிவந்த
வாயையுடையனான கண்ணபிரானை ஸேவிக்கப்பெற்ற (எனது) கண்களில் நின்றும் குளிர்ந்த
கண்ணநீர்த் துளிகள் பெருகாநின்றன. அத்தகைய சிறப்பான களிக்கைக்கு , பாக்கியமில்லாத
நான் என்ன பாவம் செய்தேன், ஏது செய்வேன்? என வினவுகிறார் ஆழ்வார்.
Let us
fall at the lotus feet of Sriman Narayana singing the verses of
Thondaradipodigal – which will ensure all goodness and
prosperity.
