People learn by
experience – sadly, 2020 seemingly has not taught people anything, going by
what is about to get repeated in 2021.
Decades ago, Madras was well prepared to face an air
raid from the Japanese during World War II. Air raid shelters were built,
sirens installed, slit trenches dug and pamphlets that told residents how to
stay safe pasted everywhere. Yet it is reported that when a Japanese plane finally bombed the city
on the night of October 11, 1943, no one knew about it for three days.
In Mar 2020,
‘a 21 day curfew’ was first announced by
Prime Minister of the Nation Shri Narendra Modiji. He spoke of the need of remaining at home,
not crossing the Lakshman Rekha. He urged
: stay at Home for your sake; everyone's sake, for the sake of our Nation. #StayHomeIndia, #NationalLockdown. It was to be a complete lockdown and He urged
that if India does not manage the
lockdown for these 21 days then India will be pushed back by 21 years. "It took 67 days for the first lakh
people to be infected from coronavirus. It only took 11 days for the next 1
lakh to be infected. Even more scary is the fact that it took only four days
for the figure to rise to 3 lakhs," said PM Modi at that time.
Delhi on Thursday reported
close to 7,500 coronavirus cases, a huge jump in the daily Covid-19 tally. For
two days in the trot, the city reported over 5,000 new infections. On
Wednesday, as many as 5,506 patient were found infected, while on Tuesday, the
number of new cases were 5,100. Breaking all records, India recorded a massive
surge of 131,893 Covid-19 cases in the last 24 hours.
In the wake of rising
COVID cases in the country, and in line with other states, the Tamil Nadu state
government has also now announced reintroduction of COVID-related restrictions.
Here are some of the restrictions :

Cinemas, theatres and
multiplexes, including those located inside malls, will be allowed to operate
with a maximum of 50 per cent capacity.
·
All shops, including
vegetable shops, provision stores, shopping malls and big showrooms, can remain
open only till 11 pm with a maximum of 50 per cent customer capacity at a time.
·
Restaurants, food courts and
tea shops will be permitted to function with 50 per cent capacity. Takeaways
are allowed till 11 pm.
·
Entertainment or amusement
parks, auditoriums, recreational clubs, assembly halls, zoological parks,
museums, and other similar places are permitted to function with 50 per cent
capacity by following SOPs.

All social, political,
academic, entertainment, sports, cultural and other functions are permitted in
closed spaces (indoor areas) with a ceiling of 200 persons. A total of 100
people will be allowed at weddings and 50 at funerals.
·
Stadiums and playgrounds can
conduct sports competitions. However, spectators are not allowed.
·
Film and serial shootings
have been permitted. However, the respective production establishment has been
instructed to ensure that artists and crew involved in the shoot undergo RT-PCR
tests and vaccination.

and shall be permitted only upto 8 PM. The
grim news is there perhaps would be no purappadu and the Emperumanar Uthsavam
starting tomorrow is most likely to be affected.
. …………. WE are the ones to blame for this situation, though one could still criticize the Govt for only restricting places of worship while allowing other things to happen – not forgetting the crowds that turned out at the Election rallies.
