Sri Mudaliandan Vanabojana Uthsavam at Singaperumal Kovil

Sri Ramanujar has the pride of place in the list of our Acharyars; he is hailed as Udayavar, Emperumanar, Bashyakarar, Ilayazhwaar, Yathirajar, Thiruppavai Jeeyar, Num Kovil annan,  amongst other names.   Our darsana Sthapakar, Sri Ramanujar rightly reverred as ‘Yathi Rajar’ ~ the king among yathis [hermits and sages, the greatest reformer he was, Ramanuja gave us many vedantic treatises - toured the entire Country, making the Srivaishnavatie tradition flourish in all his path.

Of those who remained closest to Sri Ramanuja – Sri  Mudaliandan, Sri Koorathazhwan, Sri Embar,  Sri Ananthazhwan, Arulalaperumal Emperumanar, Kidambi Achaan, Thirukurugai Piraan Pillan, Thiruvarangathu Amuthanar and more.  Sri Mudaliandan Swami is reverred as Trithandam and Sri Koorathazhwan as Thiruppavithram for Swami Ramanujar.    Sri Mudaliandan was born as Dasarathi and now hailed as ‘Yathiraja Paduka’ – thiruvadi of Bhagwat Ramanujar.

Thiruvallikkeni Karthigai Amavasai Purappadu 2014.

Today [22nd Nov 2014] is Amavasai and Karthigai  ‘Visakam’.  At Thiruvallikkeni divyadesam, there was grand purappadu of Sri Parthasarathi, photos of which are here.

After the purappadu there was ‘Thiruvirutham’ goshti at Nammalwar sannathi.

Thirumylai Sri Peyalwar purappadu with Sri Parthasarathi.

I had posted in detail on Muthal Azhwargal of our  Srivaishanva Tradition, and the mangalasasana purappadu of Sri Peyalwar from his place in Sri Adhi Kesava Perumal Thirukovil at Thirumayilai to Thiruvallikkeni.

Azhwar was received with ‘Thirukovil mariyathai’ of Sri Sadagopam in a pallakku accompanied by Senai Muthalvar.  Then Sri Peyalwar reached the thirukovil through Peyalwar kovil Street.  Inside the temple, Azhwar mangalasasanam took place in the Periya sannathi,  Vedavalli thayar, Gajendra Varadhar, Thelliya Singar and Andal sannathies.

In the evening of 18th Nov 2014, there was grand purappadu on the occasion of Ekadasi with Azhwar and Sri Parthasarathi.  Perumal perhaps was delighted with Sri Peyazhwar accompanying him – dazzled with so many thiruvabaranams (jewels) and unforgettable hair style (kondai) embellished by peacock feather (mayil peeli) – matched the description of Sri Periyalwar கருங்கண் தோகை மயிற்பீலியணிந்து கட்டி நன்குடுத்த பீதக வாடை; அருங்கலவுருவினாயர் பெருமான் ~ Periyazhwar describes Lord Krishna, the beautiful cowherd Lord as adorning the hairdo  with peacock feathers having dark centre spots, many jewels over his properly-worn  silken vestments.

It was delightful to have darshan of Perumal and here  are some photos taken during the purappadu at Thiruvallikkeni on 18th Nov 2014 – Ekadasi – Mylai Sri Peyalwar Mangalasasanam day.

Geethacharyan Magazine Nov. 2014 and my article on Dr MA Venkatakrishnan

You are looking at the Nov. 2014 issue of Geethacharyan that has Emperuman of Sri Vaikuntha Vinnagaram (Thiru Naangoor Divyadesangal) – Sri Vaikunda Natha Perumal.  Geethacharyan is a prominent sampradhaya magazine [Sri Vaishnava Sampradhaya book] started in the year 1978 and continuing in its own way for more than 36 years now.

Dr M.A. Venkatakrishnan Swami (Popularly MAV) is its editor. At Thiruvallikkeni divyadesam, sashtiapthapoorthi celebrations of   Methavimani, Gambhira Vakvarshi, Dr Mandayam Ananthanpillai Venkatakrishnan Swami was celebrated grandly –  On 24th Oct 2014, at Bharathiya Vidya Bhavan, the manivizha malar was released by : His Holiness Sri Paramahamsedhyathi Sriuperumpudur Appan Parakala Ramanuja Embar Jeeyar Swami and first copy received by Sri Mandayam Parthasarathi.  There was graceful  dance on ‘Siriya Thirumadal’  by Smt. Vyjayanthimala Bali.

I am elated to say that my article paying tributes to Dr MAV Swami – reminiscing our Santhai days when we learnt Naalayira Divyaprabandham from him – is published in the Nov. 2014 issue of Geethacharyan.

Pranams to my Guru who initiated us in to divine way.  Here is the article reproduced and a photo taken with Dr MAV on his Sashtiapthapoorthi day.

With great regards to him – S. Sampathkumar.

Thiruvallikkeni is grandly celebrating ‘Sashtiapthapoorthi’  of   Methavimani, Gambhira Vakvarshi, Dr Mandayam Ananthanpillai Venkatakrishnan Swami.  The continued kainkaryams rendered by Swami, his academic qualifications, his renditions to Srivaishnava sampradhayam, his publications of many granthams – we hail and fall in his feet.  The Sri Vaishna Sect now  holds him in very high esteem.
This coming from an ardent follower is slightly different  - this is more about the change he ushered in a generation, about his role in changing the attitude of a group of youngsters, making them feel confident, providing them in right earnest the rise to respectability.  The Triplicane of mid 1970s was different – MAV was a bubbly youngster, studying in college –  completing to become a lecturer in the same college (remember seeing him wearing spotless white shirt and white pant with stylish flowing cropped hair). We fondly watched him drive two wheelers fast – simply adored whatever he did.  At a time, when youngsters had all time for all material pleasure, MAV had different idea.  His days started early, his house was used to the fullest extent as he devoted time and energy for large group of school going kids. There were times when more than 100 such students assembled daily at his house around 05.45 am; people changed, the numbers did not dwindle. I was happy to be one among them alongside PS Lakshmi Narasimhan (Sekar), Murali, PR Ravi Sundar, S. Sundararajan, TA Bakthisaran, TA Govindachari, TA Sampathkumar, KS Venkatakrishnan (Govar), KS Gopalakrishnan (Rajathi), Veeraraghavan, Raman, Lakshmanan, Ramesh Govindan, Kesavan, Sadagopan, Pattabhi, Srivathsan .... to name a few.

Our school days started so piously attending ‘Divyaprabandha santhai’ at MAV house.  He was so considerate to all of us – a smile there and small gesture another day would provide us raptures.  He was a hero, a real role model. His teaching style was so affable (there used to be holidays not only for Brahmothsavams but also during the annual exams) – for he insisted that none of us should neglect studies.  He wanted us to excel in academics first and learn divyaprabandham also. He encouraged all of us – there were special prizes in the monthly tests, there were cash awards, uthariyams were getting distributed regularly. He took us to a few divyadesams too – taking care of us, as a mother would take care, taking care of food and stay and providing us opportunities to visit divyadesams, worship Emperuman and do goshti kainkaryam.  He groomed us teaching the works of Great Azhwargal, in between explaining the meaning of pasurams, thereby making us relish the pasurams.

The fact that all of us who learnt santhai from him are now in good positions in life is fully attributable to his methodology of ensuring that we studied well.  Managing such a large group of unruly students is tough – one may think, but a slight hard look from him was enough, for such was the respect that he commanded from all of us.  Most of us still would not dare to sit before or argue with him – as respect flows from our heart.  The summer would be at its height, and then it would torrentially pour – the place was good to accommodate and the person more than willing to share his resources and his time for our improvement.

He encouraged us to attend ‘Thiruveethi purappadu’ without fail and in Thiruvallikkeni, when one learns Sri Peyalwar’s Moondram Thiruvanthathi, one can attend so many goshtis.  We were first habituated to coming to Temple and partaking in goshtis; we did that as ordained by the master and the pride gained here, made us feel confident.  Our attitude in life changed and reflected the newly found respectability, rather forced on us by the untiring efforts of MAV.  If today, we can recite Divyaprabandham and know something about our Sampradhayam, of our Azhwargal and Acharyar, it is fully due to MAV’s resolve.  We saw our role model graduate from a student to a lecturer, starting a sampradhaya magazine (Geethacharyan), heading the Dept. of Vaishnavism in Madras University, delivering sampradhaya kalakshepams in the media.  We relished his style, understanding and clarity,  when he  spoke on various subjects including current affairs, politics and cricket besides his opulent knowledge gotten from voracious reading and effort.  Generally people find it difficult to adapt to changing times, MAV is abreast with modern technology, making use of electronic gadgets, making web presentations which makes us wonder all the time.

Years have passed by, Dr MAV is 60 now – and we have also become older – whatever wisdom and knowledge we picked up in the process, we all owe to his guidance, and we would ever remain grateful to him for all the good things in our life.

With great reverence to our Master – We, the students of MAV Swami
(PS Lakshmi Narasimhan, PR Ravi Sundar, S. Sundara Rajan and S. Sampathkumar)

Mylai Sri Peyalwar Mangalasasanam at Thiruvallikkeni

Among the 12 Azhwaars of Srivaishanva Tradition, Poigai Azhwar, Boothath Azhwar and Peyazhwar – were the ones to have descended on this Earth earlier.  They were contemporaries and are praised as “Muthal Azhwars (the first among the Azhwars).  Sri Peyalwar was born in a tank in Mylapore (thence known as Mylai Thiruvallikkeni).  His birthplace is in the present day Arundel Street in Mylapore closer to Mylai Madhaava Perumal Kovil.

Today 18th Nov. 2014 is  Ekadasi day.  On all Ekadasis, there will be periya maada veethi purappadu of Sri Parthasarathi Swami at Thiruvallikkeni Divyadesam.  Today is more special. For over a decade now, annually Sri Peyalwar from Sri Adhi Kesava Perumal Devasthanam has been visiting Thiruvallikkeni for mangalasasanam of the Divyadesa perumal.

Sri Adhi Kesava Perumal Devasthanam better known as ‘Kesava Perumal Kovil’ is near Mylai Kapaleeswarar Temple and the Chithirai kulam belongs to this Temple.  Now the Peyalwar who graces the Mylai  Kesava Perumal temple –  visits Thiruvallikkeni in a grand procession.  Sri  Peyalwar is taken in a palanquin and nearer Triplicane [at the TP koil Street – Besant Road Junction] – the pallakku is opened enabling devotees have his darshan fully.  From there, Peyalwar is taken on a grand procession in Chinna mada veethi with ‘Moondram Thiruvanthathi’ goshti – from the Vahana mandapam, Azhwar enters Thirukovil in kaipalagai.

Sri Peyawlar has sung about Thiruvallikkeni temple in his ‘Moondram Thiruvanthati’ – he describes that at Thiruvallikkeni waves are white as milk and there are red pavazham and white pearls at the time of twilight and at that sandhya time he has the darshan of the Lord at Thiruvalllikeni:

நாமம் பலசொல்லி  நாராயணாவென்று,
நாமங்கையால் தொழுதும் நன்னெஞ்சே! - வா, மருவி
மண்ணுலகமுண்டுமிழ்ந்த வண்டறையும் தண்டுழாய்,
கண்ணனையே காண்க நங்கண்.

The purpose of our birth is to appreciate and pray Sriman Narayana with folded hands calling Him by His various names.  The mouth should chant His name, hands should remain folded in prayer, eyes should be fixed at His lotus feet – for all our parts to be engaged in prayers to Him will happen with support of heart – so our heart should be pure in bakthi towards Sriman Narayanan who wears the garland made of tulsi and the one who swallowed and remade this earth.   Let us  surrender to His feet and enjoy His great qualities, which will stand us in good stead.

Here are some photos taken during the purappadu at Thiruvallikkeni.

Thiruvallikkeni Sri Parthasarathi Rohini purappadu Nov 2014

Today,  9th Nov. 2014  is Rohini Nakshathiram.  At Thiruvallikkeni divyadesam, on  every Rohini day, Sri Parthasarathi will have chinna mada veethi purappadu.

In the Muthal Azhwargal anubhavam, when Poigai and Bootathazwargal lit lamps of Ocean and Affection respectively, Sri Peyalwar has darshan of Lord and starts Moondram Thiruvanthathi saying ‘Thiru Kanden Pon Meni kanden” … then goes on praising the Lord :

இன்றே கழல்கண்டேன் ஏழ்பிறப்பும் யானறுத்தேன்,
பொன்தோய் வரைமார்வில் பூந்துழாய், - அன்று
திருக்கண்டு கொண்ட திருமாலே, உன்னை
மருக்கண்டு கொண்டேன் மனம்.

In the words of Sri Peyalwar  - his hearts brims with love for the lotus feet of the Lord whose Chest resembles mountain and is glittering with gold ornaments – the very thoughts of adorable Lord would destroy our sins and destroy our seven births too.

Here are some photos taken during the purappadu………….….…

Thieves try to rob hundial at Thiruvadi Kovil, Thiruvallikkeni

The Greatest of Ithihasa purana ‘Sri Ramayanam’  is the undiluted history of the Greatest Person who descended on this Universe, on the banks of river Sarayu, in a prosperous country called ‘Koshala’.  In the immortal Ramayana, there are learning of life ….. ~ and there is also a great character – a warrior, mightily powerful, whose body was as hard as a diamond, whose speed equalled those of fastest flying eagles, who possessed great wisdom, who could organize a group of roaming ones, who can jump hundreds of miles, yet who remained at the feet of his Master, totally committed thinking of their welfare alone – unassuming, yet capable of telling the right things at the right moment – that is Pavana Puthra Hanuman – Aanjaneya, who is called ‘siriya thiruvadi’ – bearer of Lord Rama – who carried Rama on his shoulders during the war in which the demon was killed.

At Thiruvallikkeni divyadesam – there is a sannathi for Aanjaneyar right in front of the sannathi of Lord Rama and he has purappadu with Perumal and Nammalwar during Irapathu Uthsavam on Hanumath Jayanthi day.  There is another temple of  Hanuman situate at East Tank Square Street, on the banks of Kairavini pushkarini, adjacent to which Sri Vanamamalai Mutt is located.

This temple (under Sri Parthasarathi Swami devasthanam) is in news for wrong reasons as reported in the Hindu and Dinamalar of date.  It is stated that thieves attempted to break open the temple hundial on Friday night – the crime reportedly came to light when the staff at the sannithi opened the main door in the morning.  The side door where bakthas do pradakshinam was found open and hundial damaged. The temple officials have lodged complaint with Ice House Police Station – finger prints were taken from the spot.  Police suspect that thieves must have gained entry through the rear side of the temple and reportedly had instructed the temple authorities to install CCtv.  The extent of loss is not reported – sad that security has been breached, criminals have gained access inside a locked temple.

Harikatha exponent Sri Embar Kasthuri Iyengar

Harikatha is a form of Hindu religious discourse in the format of storytelling tuned to music and laced with moral values. Harikatha usually deals with the stories from the Indian epics like Ramayana and Mahabharata or the life of saints.  It aims  to educate the people on the literary and religious values.   In some ways in Ramayana age itself, this existed and Naradha muni propagated; the epic Hero Rama’s sons Lava Kusha sang the ithihasam Ramayana as learnt from Sage Valmiki.  Harikatha owes its existence to Andhra Pradesh and is still prevalent in most parts as an age-old tradition.

There are only few exponents in this classical art. Sri TN Seshagopalan, the famed vocalist  was recently conferred ‘Harikatha Choodamani’ Award by Sri Krishna Gana Sabha. Earlier recipients of this award  are Kalyanapuram Aravamudhachariar and Thanjavur Kamala Murthy.

For generations, Harikatha exponents have conjectured everything from the effortless, spontaneous outpourings to mystic compositions of Puranic yore, bringing them to life in Harikatha. The art of imparting good values and spreading religious beliefs through the means of story telling has existed from time immemorial, in almost all ancient civilizations of the world. For us the greatest Ithihasa purana - Valmiki’s Ramayana is structured as the narrative of the sons of Rama, Kusha and Lava, at their father’s court. Most importantly the twins are described as having sung the work. The unique art of Harikatha sprung to prominence a couple of centuries ago. It was well sustained and supported by many kings – prominent among them being the Maratha kingdom of Thanjavur.

In recent times, the most famous among Harikatha exponents have been Sri Embar Vijayaragavachariar and Sri TS Balakrishna Sastrigal.  There is now youngster in their footsteps – Sri Embar Kasthuri Iyengar hailing from Thiruvali Thirunagari.

At Thiruvallikkeni divyadesam, sashtiapthapoorthi celebrations of   Methavimani, Gambhira Vakvarshi, Dr Mandayam Ananthanpillai Venkatakrishnan Swami was celebrated grandly. The first phase lined up great scholars performing kalakshepams at Nampillai sannathi at Thiruvallikkeni.   It is reaching a crescendo and on Sri Jayanthi day  with  – ‘Krishna Ganam’ by Padma Bushan, Sangeetha Kalanidhi, Vainika Gayaka Shiromani, Harikatha Choodamani  Madurai TN Seshagopalan.

On 22nd Sept. 2014,  it was Harikatha kalakshepam by Sri Embar Kasthuri at Sri Parthasarathi Swami Thirukovil.  Sri Kasthuri enthralled the audience by his devoted uninhibited style of story telling, singing, jathi – permeated with bakthi rasa.  Here are some photos taken on the occasion.

Thiruvallikkeni Sri Peyalwar Sarrumurai - Evening purappadu 2014

I have posted about Muthal Azhwargal anubhavam and the birth of Sri Peyalwar in a well in Mylapore (thence known as Mylai Thiruvallikkeni).   2nd Nov 2014 was ‘Sadhayam in the month of Aippasi’ ~ the sarrumurai of Sri Peyalwar.  In the morning Sri Parthasarathi swami had purappadu to Peyalwar sannathi, had thirumanjanam and in the evening – it rained once again,  there purappaud of Sri Peyazhwar with Sri Parthasarathi happened rapidly in the mada veethis without Perumal taking the offerings on the Streets.

For us, the lotus(red) eyed Sriman Narayana Himself is the medicine; its innate healing power; the Sweet Nectar – the power of wellbeing as well.  He is one who made the Universe, swallowed, remade,  and went on to measure it, by seeking a gift of three feet of land …..  and to Him we offer obeisance.
