Praying Sree Ramachandramurthi - "‘Jagadananda karraga’"

Even for beginners and novices, the most captivating of Carnatic is Thyagaraja keerthanas and of course Pancha Rathna keerthanas. Tyagaraja Aradhana is synonymous with the choral singing of the Ghana Raga Pancharatnam — the five songs being ‘Jagadanandakaraka’ (Nata), ‘Dudukugala’ (Gaula), ‘Sadhinchene’ (Arabhi), ‘Kanakanaruchira’ (Varali) and ‘Endaro Mahanubhavulu’ (Sri), all in Adi tala. The most famous of the group-singing sessions is the one that takes place at Tiruvaiyyaru during the Aradhana celebrations of the composer.

Saint Thiyagaraja wrote  Pancharatna kritis   in praise of  Lord   Rama. They are set to Adi Tala and each raga represents the mood of the song and the meaning of its lyrics. The Pancharatna kritis  are a set of five kritis (songs) in Carnatic classical music,  Sadguru Tyagaraja Swami  composed various pancharatnas, पन्चरत्न, to expound the almighty Lord to each of us. Of these, the ghana Pancharatna are the most popular. It begins with Jagadanandakaraka, set to Nattai, the raga that stands for veera rasa. Incidentially this is the first among the services to the Lord, during pooja and the song is the first among the pearls brought up from the depths of Ramasagara, 'Jagadanandakaraka' as the word says, glorifies Sri Rama as the giver of happiness to the worlds.

The creator of happiness throughout the world !

The beloved of Sita ! Victory be yours !

The inheritor of Suryavamsa ! King of Kings !

You are worshipped by the Devas ! You bestow good things !

Amidst the Devas, you are like the moon amidst the stars. You are flawless, like the Karpaga Vriksha for the Devas. You have a beautiful face. You say sweet words. You take care of the cows. You are the Lord of Goddesses Lakshmi. You are filled with happiness. You are ever youthful and you help your beloved.

In this song, Tyagaraja praises Ramachandra, one of the incarnations of Lord Sriman Narayana eulogizing  Ramachandra as one who is the cause of all bliss in the universe.  Read that the keerthanas were  used in the court of the Maratha king Sarabhoji who ruled in the 18th century.

Telegu tinseldom right from its origination has produced magnificent puranic films.  Sri Rama Rajyam (The Kingdom of Lord Rama) released in 2011 was directed by Bapu (in his last venture) who co-wrote the film with Mullapudi Venkata Ramana, and produced by Yalamanchali Saibabu. The film starred Nandamuri Balakrishna, Nayanthara, Akkineni Nageswara Rao, Srikanth, set to the music of Isaignani Ilaiyaraaja, which won him Nandi Award for Best Music Director. Sri Rama Rajyam is a remake of the 1963 blockbuster film Lava Kusa.  In this movie maestro  Illayaraja had 15 tracks.

Here is a mellifluous rendering of the Annamacharya sankeerthana by Balakrishna Prasad, Asthana vidwan of Thirumala Tirupathi Devasthanam. :
