Heard of ‘Chrysopogonzizanioides’ and wonder what is has to do with a Temple related post, especially one on the last day of Brahmothsavam at Thiruvallikkeni - the  10th day – Sapthavaranam and siriyathiruther of Sri Azhagiya Singa Perumal Aani  brahmothsavam at Thiruvallikkeni divyadesam on 26.6.2o24.   The  brahmothsavam is a grand 10 day affair with Emperuman having purappadu in many vahanams including Sesha, Simha, Garuda, Hamsa, Hanumantha, Yaanai, Kuthirai and more .. thiruther (juggernaut) captures the eye of everyone. . ..  the uthsavam concludes with siriya thiruther known as Vettiver ther as this coolant is fixed on all sides of the ther.  Chariots have important mention in history as also in Ithihasa puranas.

 

Chariots of the Gods (German: Erinnerungen an die Zukunft, lit. 'memories of the future') a  West German documentary film directed by Harald Reinl hit the screens in 1970. It was  based on Erich von Däniken's book Chariots of the Gods ?, a pseudo-scientific book that theorized extraterrestrials impacted early human life and evolution. The film was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature. 

Cargo cult is a term used to denote various spiritual and political movements that arose among indigenous Melanesians following Western colonisation of the region in the late 19th century. Features common to most cargo cult groups include the presence of charismatic prophet figures foretelling an imminent cataclysm and/or a coming utopia for followers—a worldview known as millenarianism.  Claims made by these prophets varied greatly from movement to movement, with some predicting the return of the dead or an abundance of food.  Some movements sought to appease "ancestral spirits or other powerful beings" by either reviving ancestral traditions or adopting new rituals, such as ecstatic dancing or imitating the actions of colonists and military personnel. 

Chariots of the Gods? Unsolved Mysteries of the Past -  is a book written in 1968 by Erich von Däniken and translated from the original German by Michael Heron. It involves the hypothesis that the technologies and religions of many ancient civilizations were given to them by ancient astronauts who were welcomed as gods. 

The main thesis of Chariots of the Gods is that extraterrestrial beings influenced ancient technology. Von Däniken suggests that some ancient structures and artifacts appear to reflect more sophisticated technological knowledge than is known or presumed to have existed at the times they were manufactured. Von Däniken maintains that these artefacts were produced either by extraterrestrial visitors or by humans who learned the necessary knowledge from extraterrestrials. Such artifacts include the Egyptian pyramids, Stonehenge, and the Moai of Easter Island.  Further examples include an early world map known as the Piri Reis map, which von Däniken describes as showing Earth as it is seen from space,  and the Nazca Lines in Peru, which he suggests may have been constructed by humans as crude replicas of previous alien structures, as a way to call the aliens back to Earth.  He uses this same explanation to argue that cart ruts in Malta may have had extraterrestrial purposes along with similar lines in Australia, Saudi Arabia, and the Aral Sea. 

The book also suggests that ancient artwork throughout the world can be interpreted as depicting astronauts, air and space vehicles, extraterrestrials, and complex technology. Von Däniken describes elements that he believes are similar in the art of unrelated cultures.  Among the artwork he describes are ancient Japanese Dogū figurines (which he believes to resemble astronauts in spacesuits) and 3,000-year-old carvings in an Egyptian New Kingdom Temple that appear to depict helicopter-like machines. The book further suggests that the origins of many religions, including interpretations of the Old Testament of the Bible, are reactions to contact with an alien race. According to von Däniken, humans considered the technology of the aliens to be supernatural and the aliens themselves to be gods. Von Däniken asks if the oral and literal traditions of most religions contain references to visitors from stars and vehicles traveling through air and space. These, he says, should be interpreted as literal descriptions which have changed during the passage of time and become more obscure.

 

In our Puranas too there are references to Devas living outside the World as also to chariots, vimanas, flyers and more .. .. residents of vinnagaram are capable of performing much bigger deeds than humans, but our life revolves around Emperuman and the ultimate surrender unto Him.

 

Getting back to vettiver thiruther, it  is all about keeping the place cool .. .. both industrial refrigeration and air-conditioning are based on the same mechanism: a fluid, generally water or air, is cooled by evaporation of another fluid, called the refrigerant. The refrigerant circuit, comprising the compressor, evaporator, condenser and expansion device, is an integral part.  Air-conditioning is that process used to create and maintain certain temperature, relative humidity and air purity conditions in indoor spaces.  An air-conditioning system must be effective regardless of outside climatic conditions and involves control over four fundamental variables: air temperature, humidity, movement and quality.

 

Vettiver is a great coolant as also spreading fragrance.   ‘Vettiver Chapparam’… is embellished with mats of vettiver. The scientific name of  vettiver is  - ‘Chrysopogonzizanioides’, a type of grass of Poaceae family, native to India.  Also known as ‘khus’ Vettiver can grow up to 1.5 metres high and form clumps as wide. This Ther is known as ‘VettiverChapparam’ – for there used to be so many sheets made of this grass placed on the temple car.  One could feel the divine fragrance from a distance itself.

Today 21.6.2024 is International Yoga Day.  Yoga is an ancient physical, mental and spiritual practice that originated in India. The word ‘yoga’ derives from Sanskrit and means to join or to unite, symbolizing the union of body and consciousness. Today it is practiced in various forms around the world and continues to grow immensely  in popularity.  

Recognizing its universal appeal, on 11 December 2014, the United Nations proclaimed 21 June as the International Day of Yoga by resolution 69/131. This year marks the 10th International Day of Yoga with the theme “Yoga for Self and Society.” Yoga, a transformative practice, represents the harmony of mind and body, the balance between thought and action, and the unity of restraint and fulfillment. It integrates the body, mind, spirit, and soul, offering a holistic approach to health and well-being that brings peace to our hectic lives. Its power to transform is what we celebrate on this special day.  

Today 21 June 2024, 6:00 pm (EDT) at UN Headquarters, New York, 10th International Yoga Day event is being organized by the Permanent Mission of India to the UN in collaboration with the UN Secretariat, the event takes place in the North Lawn Area of UNHQ.

எம்பெருமான் ஸ்ரீமன் நாரணன் எடுத்த பல அவதாரங்களும் துஷ்ட நிக்ரஹ சிஷ்ட பரிபாலனத்துக்காக !   கணக்கற்ற அடியவர்கள் வேண்ட, எம்பெருமான்  தர்மத்தை நிலை நிறுத்தவும், சாது ஜனங்களைக் காக்கவும், ஏதேனும் ஒரு வடிவம் எடுத்து அவதரிக்கிறான்.  நரசிம்ம அவதாரத்தில்  ஒரே ஒரு பக்தனின் வேண்டுகோளுக்காக, கணக்கற்ற வடிவங்களில் எங்கும் பரந்து, எல்லா பொருட்களிலும், இடங்களிலும் கலந்தான். தன்னுடைய திருவடியைப் பற்றியவர்களை ஒருநாளும் கைவிடாத சிங்க முகம் படைத்தவன் திருவல்லிக்கேணியில் அழகிய சிங்கனாக, தெள்ளிய சிங்கனாக அருள் பாலிக்கின்றான். . 

அந்த அழகிய சிங்கனுக்கு இன்று திருவல்லிக்கேணியிலே சிம்ம வாஹனம்.  தங்க சிம்ம வாகனத்தில் புறப்பாடு கொண்டருளிய தெள்ளியசிங்கனின் அருள் மிகு தோற்றமும், சிங்கத்தின் முகமும், வாலும்.

At Thiruvallikkeni divaydesam – for Sri Parthasarathi & Sri Azhagiya Singar brahmothsavam – on day 2 morning would be the beautiful Sesha vahanam.   Today  (18.6.2024) being day 2 of Sri Thelliya Singar  Aani  brahmothsavam, there was grand purappadu of Sri Azhagiya Singar  in Sesha vahanam as Paramapatha Nathar. 

Of those who render service to MahaVishnu, Ananthan – the Adi Sesha serves Him in the best possible manner that one could visualize.  He is with Him when He is moving, sitting and at Thirupparkadal, Emperuman is reclining on him.  The serpentine Ananthazhwaan is ever at the service of the Lord in every possible manner.    

Snakes have coexisted with humans for millions of years. There are more than 3,000 species of snakes on the planet and they’re found everywhere except in Antarctica, Iceland, Ireland, Greenland, and New Zealand. About 600 species are venomous, and only about 200—seven percent—are able to kill or significantly wound a human.   The serpent, or snake, is one of the oldest and most widespread mythological symbols. The word is derived from Latin serpens, a crawling animal or snake.  Snake  worship has been prevalent in many cultures.

 

In Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula, amidst the vast forests and archaeological sites, lies the awe-inspiring city of Chichén Itzá. This ancient Maya metropolis is renowned for its architecture, intricate mythology and reverence for Kukulkan, the feathered serpent god. A "vision serpent" in Maya culture, Kukulkan represented an important connection between the physical world and the spiritual world, and played a part in many of the people's social and religious traditions.  The god Kukulkan is an important figure in Maya history, dating back to pre-Hispanic Mesoamerica's classic period (250 to 900 C.E.). The Yucatec Maya attributed their living habits and agricultural practices to the benevolence of this god, among other deities. 

Kukulkan, also known as Quetzalcoatl among the Aztecs, was more than just a deity worshipped by the Maya peoples; he was a creator god, symbolizing the interconnectedness of life, the underworld and the sky. Maya mythology often depicts Kukulkan as a feathered serpent because snakes were symbols of life above and below the earth, while winged creatures were symbols of the sky. The cult of Kukulkan/Quetzalcoatl was the first Mesoamerican religion to transcend the old Classic Period linguistic and ethnic divisions.  This cult facilitated communication and peaceful trade among peoples of many different social and ethnic backgrounds.  Although the cult was originally centred on the ancient city of Chichen Itza in the modern Mexican state of Yucatán, it spread as far as the Guatemalan Highlands and northern Belize.

There is the illustrious lineage of Purvacharyargal – the hierarchy of Srivaishnava preceptors – through whom the glorious traditions passed by in generations.  Its happy culmination with Namperumal Himself becoming disciple of Acarya Mamunigal redounds the wisdom of our holy lineage.  Swami Emperumanar (Sri Ramanujar) and Mamunigal – both were incarnation of Adisesha.  Born as Nayanar, Mamunigal was an ocean of knowledge, yet learnt at the feet of his erudite father and others – the way Sri Rama and Sri Krishna did, during their stay on earth – through courses under great sages of their times like Vasistha, Viswamitra, Sandeepani .. ..  

திருப்பாற்கடலில் பள்ளி கொள்ளும் பெருமானுக்கு 'சேஷசாயி' என அழகான  திருநாமம். அந்த அரவணையானின் பாதங்களை    தொழுது ஏத்துபவர்கள் என்று  என்றும் குறைவிலர் !..  . Here is one of the verses of Boothathazhwar:        

ஞானத்தால் நன்குணர்ந்து நாரணன்றன் நாமங்கள்,

தானத்தால் மற்றவன் பேர் சாற்றினால், - வானத்து

அணியமரர்  ஆக்குவிக்கும் அஃதன்றே, நங்கள்

பணியமரர் கோமான் பரிசு. 

பூதத்தாழ்வாரின் இந்த வரிகள் ஆழ்வாரின் அனுபவத்தை நமக்கு உணர்த்த வல்லன.  மிக சாதாரணமாய் புரிந்து கொள்ள முயற்சித்தால் இப்பாசுரத்தின் அர்த்தம் இவ்வாறு ஆகுமாம் போலே  : 

எம்பெருமானுக்குப் பல்லாயிரத் திருநாமங்களுண்டு; அவற்றில், திருமேனி முதலியவற்றுக்கு வாசகமான திருநாமங்கள் என்று ஒரு வகுப்பும், விபூதி விஸ்தாரங்களுக்கு வாசகமான திருநாமங்கள் என்று மற்றொரு வகுப்பும் கொள்ளத் தக்கன.  ஸ்ரீவத்ஸவக்ஷா; புண்டரீகாக்ஷ:, பீதாம்பர:, சார்ங்கீ, சக்ரபாணி:-  இத்யாதி திருநாமங்கள் முந்தின வகுப்பைச் சேர்ந்தவை; லோகாத்யக்ஷ:, ஸுராத்யக்ஷ:, ஜகத்பதி : -  இத்யாதி திருநாமங்கள் பிந்தின வகுப்பைச் சேர்ந்தவை.  ஆக இவ்விரு வகுப்புகளையுந் திருவுள்ளம்பற்றி, முதலடியில் “நாரணன்றன் நாமங்கள்” என்றும், இரண்டாமடியில் “மற்றவன் பேர்” என்றும் அருளிச் செய்யப்பட்டுள்ளது.
