For Srivaishnavaites – divyadesams assume great significance as these are the places where our Great Azhwars visited and sung about the Lord. Equally important are the places associated with Azhwagal and Acharyargal….. around 50 kms away from the city of Chennai on the Bangalore Highway lies Sriperumpudur, the birthplace of Sri Ramanujar - after Sriperumpudur comes Sunkuvar Chathiram  - here one has to branch off  right and travel around 5-6 kms… to reach Madhuramangalam, the birth place of Embar.

இன்று 28.7.2023 ஸ்ரீவைணவ சமுதாயத்திற்கு ஓர் பேரிடி !! நம்மிடையே வாழும் எதிராஜனாகவே வாழ்ந்து வந்த எம்பார் ஜீயர் ஸ்வாமி திருநாடு அலங்கரித்த செய்தி ஆழ்ந்த வருத்தத்தை தந்துள்ளது. உய்ய ஒரே வழி  உடையவர் திருவடி என  ஸ்ரீவைஷ்ணவர்களுக்கு உயரிய தாரக மந்திரத்தை உரக்க சொல்லி பரப்பியவர்.

திருவரங்கத்து அமுதனார் தமது இராமானுச நூற்றந்தாதியில் :  

வைப்பாய வான் பொருளென்று * நல்லன்பர் மனத்தகத்தே

எப்போதும் வைக்கும் இராமானுசனை * 

என்று மங்களாசாசனம் செய்தார்.  கடின இடர்கள் எதிர்ப்படும்  ஆபத்துக் காலத்தில் உதவுவதற்காகச் சேர்த்து வைக்கப்பட்ட மிகவும் உயர்ந்த பெருமையுடைய தனம் எம்பெருமானார்.  வைத்தமாதியாக உள்ள இவரை மிகவும் உயர்ந்த தனம் என்று ஆழ்வான், எம்பார், முதலியாண்டான் போன்றோர் தங்கள் மனதில் வைத்தனர். உயர்ந்த இரத்தினக் கற்களைச் செப்புக் குடத்தில் வைப்பது போன்று இவர்கள் இவ்விதம் தங்கள் மனதில் உடையவரை வைத்தனர்.  

அவர்கள் போலவே ஸ்ரீவைஷ்ணவத்திற்கு தன் வாழ்வையே அர்ப்பணித்து அனைவருக்கும் உடையவர் தாளடிகளை அடைந்து உய்யும் உபாயத்தை பட்டி தொட்டி எங்கும் பரப்பியவர்.  எளிமையின் சிகரம். பண்பின் இமாலயம் என திகழ்ந்த ஒரு மாபெரும் ஆச்சார்யர்  இன்று நம்மிடம் இருந்து பிரிந்து திருநாடு ஏகினார்.  அவரது ஆன்மீகச் சிந்தனைகள் மிக  சிறப்பானவரி. எம்பெருமானார் சிந்தனைகளைப்  தன் வாழ்க்கை நெறிமுறையாய் இல்லம் தோறும் கொண்டு சென்ற உத்தமர்.   பூர்வாசிமரத்தில்  ஸ்ரீ உ.வே.குமாரவாடி இராமானுஜாசாரியார் என  'திருமால்' ஆன்மீகத் திங்கள் இதழ் சிறப்பாக நடத்தி, பின்னாளில் ராஜரிஷியாக வாழ்ந்து, இன்று எம்பெருமானார் இடத்தே சென்று சேர்ந்து விட்டார்.  அவரது ஆன்மிகத் தொண்டுகள் அவரை  பரத்துவ கைங்கர்யத்தில் ஈடுபடுத்தும் என்பதில் ஓர் மனநிறைவு எனினும் இன்று மிக வருத்தமாகவே உள்ளது  .   யாவர் பாலும்  பாகுபாடின்றி செலுத்தி வந்த பரிவும் பாசமும்  என்றென்றும் அவரை நினைவு கூற வைக்கிறது.

Sri Ramanujar has the pride of place in the list of our Acharyars; he is hailed as Udayavar, Emperumanar, Bashyakarar, Ilayazhwaar, Yathirajar, Thiruppavai Jeeyar, Num Kovil annan,  amongst other names.   Of those who remained closest to Sri Ramanuja – Sri  Mudaliandan, Sri Koorathazhwan, Sri Embar,  Sri Ananthazhwan, Arulalaperumal Emperumanar, Kidambi Achaan, Thirukurugai Piraan Pillan, Thiruvarangathu Amuthanar and more. 

Today we grive the passing away of   His Holiness Sri Perumpudur Appan Parakala Ramanuja Embar Jeeyar Swami.   Swami had completed 99 years and was close to his century.   The 1^st peedapathi of this Embar Mutt was Sri Krishnan Swami who travelled wide and finally established a Mutt at Sriperumpudur known as Sri Perumpudur Embar Jeeyar Mutt.  The mutt was founded by him in 1834 CE.

HH Srimath Paramahamsethyadhi  Appan ParakAla EmbAr Jeeyar swamy, was popularly known as Kumaravadi Ramanujachariar in his purvasraman [i.e., before accepting sanyasam].  Swami  was a renowned scholar, known for his exceptional clarity and style of writing and deliverance of kalakshepams. Swami was fondly known as ‘Che Ra’ – was with Dinamani and ran Srivaishnava Sampradhaya magazine “Thirumal” – wrote many books and commentaries on granthams.     

Sri Embar Jeeyar Swami was very active throughout his life, visiting many divyadesams and other places  with exceptional regularity.  He presided over many vidwat sadas and propagated Srivaishnavaite doctrines.  Swami was present  on 22^nd Feb 2015 at the  961^st  Birth day celebrations of Thirumalai Ananthai Pillai at holy Thirumala; was present at Gangaikondan mantap during panchangam release in 2014 and in Sept. 2010,  the two Yathis – Sree Govinda Yathiraja Jeeyar Swami and  Sreemath Paramahamsa Appan Parakala Ramanuja Embaar Jeeyar Swami were present at our native village Mamandur [Dusi Mamandur approx 9 kms away from Kanchi after river Palaru].  

Right from his young days, Swami was a great Nationalist who conducted many vizhas for Nationalist movements and participated in freedom struggle too.  He was vociferous against the propaganda against Theism and organized meetings.  He coordinated with various Hindu organisations like VHP in propagating bakthi culture.  Ages ago, he spoke on same platforms alongside Kirupanantha variyar showcasing that there are no differences between Saivism and Vaishnavism and each tend to steer devotees towards bakthi cult.  For many years he ran Sivaishnava magazine Thirumal and was involved in books published by Lifco Krishnaswami sharma.  His book ‘Bhagawat Ramanuja’ released by  Kachi Swami Sri Prathivathi Bayankaram Annangarachar is a treasure trove of information.  Like Acarya Udayavar, he travelled to hundreds of villages propagating the teachings of Ramanujar.  

He was recognized with many titles and awards, foremost among them being the title ‘Thiru Naaveerudaiya Piran’ by Kachi swami, ‘Sara grahi’ by Karappangadu Swami; ‘Senthamizh Vethiyar’ title given by Barathi Kalai kazhagam, Sreevainava Maamani, and Sreevaishnavasimhan appreciated by Sri Sudarsanar Sree Krishnaswami Iyengar.   

Everyone of us who are in the habit of going to Temples at Sriperumpudur, Thiruvallikkeni, Mylapore, Kanchi and more – would have had the lifetime opportunity of seeing this Swami and speaking to him.  He was a very intelligent person with astounding knowledge in satsampradhaya, granthas and was equally at ease on every aspect of life.  Most important thing was his soulabyam in allowing people to get closer to him, his great memory in remembering people and blessing all the Srivaishnavas. 

I fall at the feet of the great Yathi who taught us the path of Swami Ramanujacharya. In his passing, Srivaishanavism has lost a doyen, a greart Acarya who reminded us the Great Ramanujacharya himself.
