Kainkaryam
to Emperuman – Sripatham at Thiruvallikkeni
It is an exponential World ripe with
opportunities, so many entertainment, and diversions to spend life
without worry !! – a group of 150+ people ! – devoted to sripatham kainkaryam.
All the philosophies, axioms and pearls of wisdom
– people talk about being good to others. We go to Temples, worship Emperuman, forget our
worries and are blissfully happy… .. in the midst of festivity in any
Temple, we worship Emperuman in various sarruppadi (alankarams). The aim
of life is to reach Him by serving Him and those who do kainkaryam to
Him. Srivaishnavaite way of life is singing paeans, chanting
divyaprabandham, doing service and having darshan at His various abodes.
Life in a divyadesam is always exciting ! ~ it
provides ample opportunities to be with Emperuman and do kainkaryam .. .. the
primary challenge is one of involvement and being with Lord for long hours.
A couple of decades ago, when those coming for rendering this service were becoming thinner, this group got more organized and formed Sri Thennacharya Sri Vaishnava Sripadham Thangigal Kainkarya Sabhai ~ now a registered association too. For the kainkaryabarars, like Sripadhamthangigal, involvement starts hours before the actual purappadu and ends much after Perumal’s vahanam descends at Vahana mantapam and Perumal returns to the Temple. Not all would know there is more … it is not only present, but – after the purappadu, the vahanam needs to go back to its place … and strategically, the vahanam for the next purappadu is readied – the evening purappadu would end in dead of night and the morning purappadu would start early morning and hence the work
Their kainkaryam is ‘nonpareil’ – exceptional
commitment, regularity of presence and their age. Narayanan mama is 74 and Sampath is into his
70s ! This duo has formulated, guided,
and have stood with the group of
youngsters for decades exhibiting exceptional devotion and commitment. They certainly have completed golden jubilee
(50 years) of kainkaryam and are marching to complete diamond !
Nani mama with his cheerful disposition will be
ever ready for Sripadham in every purappadu and also gives ample opportunity
and tips to every youngster teaching
them the nuances of having Emperuman on shoulders and walk straight in
unison. He hails from Ekkadu a small
hamlet near Thiruvallur divyadesam. For
long his family resided in Thavana uthsava bungalow. He retired from Integral Coach Factory and is
fully devoted to Temple now.
Have seen his father Ekkadu Ramaswami Iyengar do
great kainkaryam – active in Swami Manavalamamunigal sabha and did many
kainkaryam including sripathamthangi.
Infact right in his old age, have seen him work in Aavin milk booth in
Besant road, lifting milk crates (those days containing 20 milk bottles per
crate) with ease and throwing them into the carrying lorry. Nani mama is a true legend of
Triplicane.
The other person is Sampath, fondly Iyengar Sampathu. He also has a great lineage – his
grandfather Veeravalli Rajagopala Iyengar was born in 1899 and started
kainkaryam from 1913 when he was just into his teens. He became the Ameena (maniyakarar) of Sri
Parthasarathi swami temple in 1935 and served till 1968 when retired from
Maniyam post and for few more years did service voluntarily. His son - V. Rangamani Iyengar started kainkaryam from 1944, when he was just
15 and did sripatham kainkaryam – he worked in RMS (postal services). His son is V Sampathkumar who started
kainkaraym an year before my birth and is very regular sripatham thangi. In addition to this all the 3 have been hereditary trustee of Sri Rajagopala perumal
temple located at Manimangalam village
The service tradition continues as Sampath’s
two son are very regular in kainkaryam – his first son V Raghuraman is MCA
while second son V Madhusudhanan is CA
At Triplicane – though every one of them is
well educated - the passionate qualification
is kainkaryam – everything else is secondary. Poliga,
poliga, poliga such rich tradition. Fall at the feet of all Srivaishnavas doing such noble
kainkaryam and pray Emperuman that we respect such people all the time. Life lesson to be learnt is that one should
never boast of self as there are innumerable people with higher qualifications
who tirelessly render kainkaryam and do not project themselves in any manner.
