Thirumylai Kapali Kovil - Nandi

Today, 16th Jan 2023  ~ is a day of special significance. After Bhogi and Makara Sankranthi [Pongal], today is dedicated to the cattle,  popularly known as ‘Mattu Pongal’

 

A day celebrating the cattle, particularly cows and bulls that play a vital role,  working hard to help the farmers to raise crops on their fields.  The festival is an occasion when the fresh harvests from the fields are shared in the form of food and sweets not only with the community but also with animals and birds. 

Nandi also known as Nandikeshwara or Nandideva, is the bull,  vahana of the Lord Shiva. He is also the guardian deity of Kailash, the abode of Shiva. Almost all Shiva temples display stone-images of a seated Nandi, generally facing the main shrine. According to Saivite siddhantic tradition, he is considered as the chief guru of eight disciples of Nandinatha Sampradaya, namely, Sanaka, Sanatana, Sanandana, Sanatkumara, Tirumular, Vyagrapada, Patanjali, and Sivayoga Muni, who were sent in eight different directions, to spread the wisdom.

 

The Sanskrit word Nandi means :  happiness,  joy, and satisfaction, the properties of divine guardian of Shiva- Nandi. Nandi is worshipped  as the son of the sage Shilada. Shilada underwent severe penance to have a boon– a child with immortality and blessings of Lord Shiva, and received Nandi as his son.    

நந்தி -  சிவபெருமானின் தங்குமிடமான கயிலை மலை நுழைவாயிலை, பாதுகாக்கும் தெய்வம்.  இவர் வழக்கமாக ஒரு காளையாக சித்தரிக்கப்படுகிறார். இவர் சிவனுக்கு வாகனம். சைவ சித்தாந்த மரபின் படி, நந்திநாத சம்பிரதாயத்தின் எட்டு சீடர்களின் பிரதான குருவாக நந்தி தேவர் கருதப்படுகிறார்; சனகா, சனாதன, சனந்தனா, சனத்குமாரா, திருமூலர், வியாக்ரபாதா, பதஞ்சலி, மற்றும் சிவயோகா முனி ஆகிய எட்டு சீடர்களும் சைவ சமயத்தை பரப்புவதற்கு எட்டு வெவ்வேறு திசைகளில் அனுப்பப்பட்டனர். சைவ சமயத்தில் முதல் குருவாகவும் சிவனின் வாகனமாகவும் கருதப்படுபவர் திருநந்தி தேவர்.  ஆலயங்களில் சிவலிங்கத்தின் முன் நோக்கி நந்தி தேவரின் உருவம் அமைக்கப்பட்டிருக்கும்.  

நந்தியே சைவத்தின் மையம் என்பது சங்கப்பாடலான புறநானூற்றுக் கடவுள் வாழ்த்தாக அமைந்த பாடல். .  ஈசனை நோக்கி தவம்புரிந்த நந்தியம்பெருமான் இமய பர்வதமாக மலைவடிவம் பெற்று சிவனைத் தாங்கும் பெரும்பேறு பெற்றவர். நந்தி தேவர்  வெண்ணிறமுடையவர்.  ஈசனின் வாகனம். அதனாலேயே ஈசனை இடபக்கொடியோன் என்பார்கள்.
