The name (though variously misspelt and mispronounced) has become viral – Mandus .. .. no it is cyclone Mandous. It all started off as a deep depression over the south Bay of Bengal last weekend has since intensified into Cyclone Mandous. It is moving nearly west-northwestward at a speed of 12 kmph for past 6 hours and is reported to be 390 km away from the coast of Karaikal and 480 km southwest of Chennai according to a release by the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD). As it continues to inch closer to the Indian mainland, IMD projects that it may make landfall between south Andhra-north Tamil Nadu coasts by Friday night/early Saturday.

This is hardly our first rodeo with cyclones — in fact, such cyclonic storms charge towards the Indian subcontinent annually. It is very windy out there, waves were on abnormal high and there have been rains .. .. rains that interrupted Thirupanazhwar sarrumurai purappadu on Karthigai day at Thiruvallikkeni.

இன்று ஸ்ரீவைணவ ஆலயங்களில் கார்த்திகை தீபத்திருநாள் சிறப்புற கொண்டாடப்பட்டது. இன்று திருப்பாணாழ்வார் சாற்றுமுறையும் கூட. சற்று பலமான தூறல் இருந்தபோதும் நம் ஸ்ரீபார்த்தசாரதி எம்பெருமான், ஆழ்வாருடன் கோபுரவாசல் தாண்டி எழுந்தருளி - திருக்கோவிலில் வாசலில் சொக்கப்பனை கொளுத்தப்பட்டது. திடீரென பனைஓலைகளான ஒரு உயரமான ஏற்பாட்டை கண்டு சிலருக்கு இது என்ன என்ற கேள்வி எழுந்து இருக்கலாம் !!

Those of us interested in Cricket would have observed for sure – ‘palm trees’. Palms are symbolically important in the Caribbean, appearing on the coats of arms of several Caribbean nations and on the flag of the West Indies cricket team. It is stated that there are about 191 genera and 2339 species of Arecaceae, the palm family. Ever imagined a beach without the beautiful palm tree? .. .. the air that we breathe and that surrounds us is full of millions of interesting compounds. Some of these compounds can be harmful to our health and some of them can affect things like weather and climate,” explains an atmospheric chemist at the University of Cambridge. The Arecaceae are a botanical family of perennial climbers, shrubs, acaules and trees commonly known as palm trees (owing to historical usage, the family is alternatively called Palmae.

கவையாகிக் கொம்பாகிக் காட்டகத்தே நிற்கும் நல்ல மரங்கள், மனிதகுலத்தின் வளர்ச்சியோடும் வாழ்க்கையோடும் பின்னி பிணைந்து இருப்பன. நெடிய மரங்கள் என்றாலே "பனையும் ! தென்னையும் !!". கவிச்சக்கரவர்த்தி கம்பர் தம் 'சடாயு உயிர் நீத்த படலத்தில்' :

நீண்டேன் மரம் போல, நின்று* ஒழிந்த புன் தொழிலேன்;

வேண்டேன், இம் மாமாயப்* புன் பிறவி வேண்டேனே! * மாண்டேனே அன்றோ !

ஜடாயு போரிட்ட இடத்தில் உள்ள தடயங்களை கண்டு ஸ்ரீஇராமபிரான் - இத்தகு செயல்களுக்குக் காரணமான நான்) இறந்தவனையே ஒத்தவனல்லவா? (அவ்வாறு இறக்காமல் இருப்பதற்குக் காரணம்); மறையோர் குறை முடிப்பான் – வேதத்தில் வல்ல முனிவர்களது குறைகளை நீக்குவதான; விரதம் பூண்டேன் - விரதத்தைக் கைக் கொண்டுள்ளேன்; அதனால் உயிர் பொறுப்பேன் - அதனால் உயிரை (உடலில்) கொண்டவனாகி; நீண்டேன் - வாழ் நாள் நீட்டிக்கப் பெற்றுள்ளேன்; மரம்போல நின்று .. .. .. என்பதாக !!

பண்டைய தமிழகத்தில் வேந்தர்தம் குலமரபுச் சின்னங்களாக இருந்தவை மரங்கள். சேரன் (பனை), சோழன் (அத்தி), பாண்டியன் (வேம்பு) என ! . பனை புல்லினத்தைச் சேர்ந்த ஒரு தாவரப் பேரினம். பழங்காலத்து மொழி இலக்கண, இலக்கியங்கள் ஓலைப்படுத்தப்பட்டதனால் நமக்கு வந்து சேர்த்தன - அதில் முக்கிய பங்கு -பனை ஓலைக்கே!'. பனைகள் பொதுவாகப் பயிரிடப்படுவதில்லை, இயற்கையிலே தானாகவே வளர்ந்து பெருகுகின்றன. இளம் பனைகள் வடலி என்று அழைக்கப்படுகின்றன.

இன்று 8.12.2022 - கார்த்திகை தீப நன்னாள். திருப்பாணாழ்வார் சாற்றுமுறையும் கூட ! பல வருடங்களில், கார்த்திகை கலியன் சாற்றுமுறை அன்று வரும். திருவல்லிக்கேணியில் திருக்கார்த்திகை முதல் தைலக்காப்பு, மூலவர் சேவை கிடையாது, புறப்பாடுகளும் கிடையாது என்பதால் பாணர் சாற்றுமுறை திருக்கோவில் உள்ளேயே நடைபெறும். இவ்வருஷம் இன்று ஸ்ரீபார்த்தசாரதி எம்பெருமான் மற்றும் திருப்பாணாழ்வார் சாற்றுமுறை புறப்பாடு (மழை காரணமாக பெரிய வீதி புறப்பாடு நடைபெறவில்லை) - கோபுரவாசலை கடந்து 36 கால் மண்டபத்தில் எழுந்தருளி - தீமை எல்லாம் ஒழிய சொக்கப்பனை கொளுத்தப்பட்டது.

Today it was Thiruppanazhwar Sarrumurai and Thirukarthigai deepa uthsavam - the other significance of the purappadu was lighting of ‘chokkapanai’ - on Thirukarthigai day, in the open space in front of Sri Parthasarathi temple, suddenly palm leaf structure was spruced up.

இன்று திருக்கார்த்திகை தீபம். திருக்கோவில், சுற்றுக்கோவில் சன்னதிகள் அனைத்திலும் திருவிளக்கு ஏற்றப்படுகின்றது. ஒவ்வொரு திருக்கார்த்திகைக்கும் ஸ்ரீபார்த்தசாரதி புறப்பாடு உண்டு. நாம் சிறப்பாக கொண்டாடும் தொன்மையான திருவிழாக்களில் ஒன்று திருக்கார்த்திகை தீபம். இவ்விழாவில் விளக்குகள் ஏற்றப்பட்டு இனிய கொண்டாட்டங்கள் நடைபெறும். கார்த்திகை விளக்கீடு’ என இலக்கியங்கள் போற்றும் தீபத்திருவிழாவில், பனைமரங்களுக்கும் முக்கியத்துவம் உண்டு. பனை மரத்தை இலக்கியங்கள் - , `பூலோக கற்பகவிருட்சம்’ என்று போற்றுகின்றன.

கார்த்திகை புறப்பாட்டின் போது சொக்கப்பனை கொளுத்துதல் உண்டு. இது காய்ந்த பனை ஓலைகளால் ஆனது. இம்மரம் திருக்கார்த்திகை தினத்தில் ஆலயத்தின் முன்பெ வெட்டவெளியில் நடப்படும் - பனை ஓலைகளைப் பிணைத்துக் கட்டி, உயரமான கூம்பு போன்ற அமைப்பில் நடுவே பட்டாசு மத்தாப்புகளும் கூட இடம் பெறும். நகர்ப்புறத்தில் இதன் நடுவே தீபாவளி பட்டாசுகளையும் சொருகி வைப்பர். பனை, புல்லினத்தைச் சேர்ந்த ஒரு தாவரப் பேரினம். தமிழ்நாட்டின் தேசிய மரம் பனை. ஒரு தாவரத்தின் எல்லா பாகங்களும் பயன் தருவது பனைக்கு உள்ள சிறப்பு. பஞ்சங்களில் பனங்கிழங்கு உணவாக பயன் பட்டிருக்கிறது. பனைகள் பொதுவாகப் பயிரிடப்படுவதில்லை, இயற்கையிலே தானாகவே வளர்ந்து பெருகுகின்றன.

கற்பகத் தருவான பனை மரம் கல்பதரு என்றழைக்கப்படுவது. தேவமரம் என்றும் அழைக்கப்படுவது. பனை மரத்தின் வேர் முதற்கொண்டு நுனி வரை அனைத்துப் பொருட்களும் மனித வாழ்க்கைக்கு உதவுகின்றன. வேறு எந்த மரத்திற்கும் இல்லாத சிறப்பு பனை மரத்திற்கு மட்டும் உண்டு. பனை ஓலை பச்சையாக இருந்தாலும் தீ பட்டவுடன் கொழுந்து விட்டு எரியும் தன்மை உடையது. பனை மரத்தினைப் போல, வாழ்க்கை முழுவதும் பிறருக்கு உதவியாக இருந்தால், ஸதேக முக்தி அதாவது இந்த வாழ்க்கையிலேயே சுவர்க்கத்தைக் கண்டு, முக்தியை அடைய முடியும் என்பதைக் காட்டுவதற்காகவே சொர்க்கப் பனை அல்லது சொக்கப்பனை அமைந்துள்ளது.

இவ்வருஷம் திருக்கோவிலுக்கு முன்பு உள்ள வெட்டவெளியில் 36 கால் மண்டபத்துக்கு, ஸ்ரீஆண்டாள் நீராட்ட மண்டபத்துக்கு இடையில் சொக்கப்பனை ஏற்பாடானது. திருக்கார்த்திகை புறப்பாட்டின் போது எடுக்கப்பட்ட "சொக்கப்பனை " படங்கள் இங்கே.

தீபத் திருவிழா அன்று திருவண்ணாமலை கோயிலில் பரணி தீபம் ஏற்றப்படும். அதைத் தொடர்ந்து மாலையில் மலை மீது மகாதீபம் ஏற்றுவார்கள். எல்லா வீடுகளிலும் அகல் விளக்குகளும், மாவிளக்கு தீபமும் ஏற்றி வழிபடுவார்கள். சில கிராமங்களில், கார்த்திகைத் திருநாளில் மகளிர் விளக்குகள் பல ஏற்றி வானத்து விண்மீன்கள் போல ஊரெங்கும் ஒளிரச் செய்வர். சிறுவர் சுளுந்தைச் சுற்றித் தீப்பொறிகள் சிதறும்படி செய்து மகிழ்வர்.

Read on the web that among the thousands of trees that dot Southern California’s landscape, perhaps none symbolizes the region more than the palm tree. With their stately trunks and thick, flowery masses of fronds, they liven up the urban scenery and offer a tropical atmosphere. But when not maintained properly, palm trees can also create a deadly fire hazard--literally exploding into flames in a matter of minutes, according to fire officials.

A couple of years ago, a fire started by a palm tree, snapped a power line devastated Lemon Heights, destroying 33 buildings and causing $3.5 million in damage. Back in 1982, a palm tree sparked one of the worst blazes in Southern California history, one that levelled 53 buildings in Anaheim, leaving 1,300 people homeless and causing $50 million in damage. That blaze was reportedly started by a wire from a city street light rubbing against an untrimmed palm tree, setting the fronds on fire and sending flames onto nearby roofs. The city eventually paid more than $12 million to insurance companies and property owners to settle claims from that blaze, which took more than 350 firefighters to combat.

In Tamil Nadu, every month, 1 litre of palmoil is given free in Ration shops. Palm oil is an edible vegetable oil derived from the mesocarp (reddish pulp) of the fruit of the oil palms, primarily the African oil palm Elaeis guineensis, and to a lesser extent from the American oil palm Elaeis oleifera and the maripa palm Attalea maripa. Palm oil is a common cooking ingredient in the tropical belt of Africa, Southeast Asia and parts of Brazil. Palm oil and palm olein originate from the same plant, a palm species known as E. Guineesis. Palmolein has different characteristics than the palm oil, most notably that it remains completely liquid at room temperature communities.

Chokkapanai symbolizes burning of bad behavior and unwanted elements ~ the lamps symbolize blossoming knowledge. திருக்கார்த்திகை சொக்கப்பனை தீ போல துன்பங்கள் ஓடட்டும் ! மக்கள் அனைவரின் வாழ்விலும் நன்மைகள் விளைந்து, நல்லனவும் இனியனவும் நடக்கட்டும்.
