Aani Thiruvathirai - Swami Ramanujar Thirunakshathiram 2022

 ‘Ananthah sarasi dhere  Ramye  Bhoothapurivare’ – on the bank of Ananthasaras the temple pushkarini, is the temple of Sri Adhi Kesavar.   Boothapuri, better known now as Sri Perumpudur is the most divine place for us –  the place where our Greatest Acharyar “Emperumanaar, Bashyakarar” the reincarnation of Aadi Sesha and Sri Lakshmanar was born,  in the year 1017  to Kesava Somayaji and Gandhimathi couples.   Ilayavalwar as he was known at birth, Ramanujar was born in the year of grace of Pingala corresponding to year 939 of Salivahana era  and lived for a period of 120 years.   He was named Illayazhwar [denoting Lakshmana] by his uncle Srisaila Purnar foreseeing his wisdom, infinity and eternity.   

Our Srivaishnavism hails Ubhaya Vedanta – there are philosophies restricted to having their scriptures in either Sanskrit or Tamil ~ Sri Vaishnavism has Sanskrit and dravida vedantha in equal parlance. .. .. and we have the noblest of preceptors  - Swami Ramanujar – the King of all hermits guiding us the path.   Our darsana Sthapakar, Sri Ramanujar rightly reverred as ‘Yathi Rajar’ ~ the king among yathis [hermits and sages, the greatest reformer he was, Ramanuja gave us many vedantic treatises - toured the entire Country, making the Srivaishnavatie tradition flourish in all his path.     Worshipping Sri Ramanujar will cure us of all sins.  

Our Acaryar Swami Manavala Mamunigal was so attached to the feet of Sri Ramanujar and here is a verse from his Yathiraja Vimsati – which according to our learned vidwans came in to being as a result of the request of Swami Manavala Maminigal’s acharyan to compose a sthOthra grantham on Sri Ramanujar, when Mamunigal was a  grahasthar and had the name of Azhagiya MaNavALa NaayanAr.   These twenty verses constitute one of the most beautiful appeals to RaamAnujA for conferring his anugraham.

नित्यं यतीन्द्र तव दिव्यवपुस्स्म्रुतौ मे सक्तम् मनो भवतु वाग्गुणकीर्तनेSसौ

What is life ?  - how to make a living ?? – ever wondered on these ? – is there life outside our Planet earth ??  

The United States Supreme Court on Friday (June 24) overturned by a 6-3 majority ‘Roe v. Wade’, the court’s landmark 1973 judgment – interested in knowing, what was that about !!  

Often we hear about – ‘work-life balance’. Striking the perfect work-life balance is a daunting task for many of us, but it seems residents of Oslo have found the solution. According to a recent survey by software company Kisi, the capital of Norway is the best city in the world for a healthy work-life balance. The city clinched the very top spot from its second-place ranking last year. The list included 100 cities around the world where residents can achieve a healthy work-life balance. The cities on the list were ranked on multiple factors including work intensity, institutional support, legislation, and livability, in the current context of rampant inflation and fallout from the pandemic and Russia-Ukraine War. Under work intensity, factors like remote jobs, overworked population, minimum vacations offered days, vacations taken days, unemployment, multiple jobholders, inflation, and paid parental leave days were also considered.  

Life, is the  condition that distinguishes organisms from inorganic objects and dead organisms.  By some definition, ‘Living species’ are the one that are not  extinct.  

Life is a characteristic that distinguishes physical entities that have biological processes, such as signaling and self-sustaining processes, from those that do not, either because such functions have ceased (they have died) or because they never had such functions and are classified as inanimate.  Biology is the science that studies life.  

More than 15 months after landing in Jezero Crater on Mars, NASA’s Perseverance rover has finally begun its hunt for ancient life in earnest. On 28 May, Perseverance ground a 5-centimetre-wide circular patch into a rock at the base of what was once a river delta in the crater. This delta formed billions of years ago, when a long-vanished river deposited layers of sediment into Jezero, and it is the main reason that NASA sent the rover there. On Earth, river sediment is usually teeming with life. Way back in Aug 1996, reporters, photographers and television camera operators surged into NASA headquarters in Washington, D.C. The crowd focused not on the row of seated scientists in NASA’s auditorium but on a small, clear plastic box on the table in front of them. Inside the box was a velvet pillow, and nestled on it like a crown jewel was a rock—from Mars. The scientists announced that they’d found signs of life inside the meteorite.  The rock, the researchers explained, had formed 4.5 billion years ago on Mars, where it remained until 16 million years ago, when it was launched into space, probably by the impact of an asteroid.  

Despite Schopf’s note of skepticism, the NASA announcement was trumpeted worldwide. “Mars lived, rock shows Meteorite holds evidence of life on another world,” said the New York Times. “Fossil from the red planet may prove that we are not alone,” declared The Independent of London.   If all goes as planned, a new generation of rovers will arrive on Mars within the next decade. These missions will incorporate cutting-edge biotechnology designed to detect individual molecules made by Martian organisms, either living or long dead.  

Moving away from life in other planets, back in Mother Earth, the  United States Supreme Court on Friday (June 24) overturned by a 6-3 majority ‘Roe v. The decision — an early draft of which was scooped by ‘Politico’ on May 3 — will transform life for women in America. Near total bans on abortion will come into effect in about half of the country’s states.  The case is sometimes referred to simply as “Roe”, the listed name of the 22-year-old plaintiff, Norma McCorvey. ‘Wade’ was the defendant Henry Wade, the Dallas County (Texas) district attorney at the time. The US Supreme Court on Friday ended the right to abortion in a seismic ruling that shreds half a century of constitutional protections on one of the most divisive and bitterly fought issues in American political life. "The Constitution does not confer a right to abortion; Roe and Casey are overruled; and the authority to regulate abortion is returned to the people and their elected representatives," the court said. In the majority opinion, Justice Samuel Alito said "abortion presents a profound moral issue on which Americans hold sharply conflicting views.  The ruling will likely set into motion a cavalcade of new laws in roughly half of the 50 US states that will severely restrict or outright ban and criminalize abortions, forcing women to travel long distances to states that still permit the procedure !!

Sree Sreenivasa Perumal kovil @ Egmore

The Monitorial System, also known as Madras System or Lancasterian System, was an education method that took hold during the early 19th century, because of Spanish, French, and English colonial education that was imposed into the areas of expansion. This method was also known as "mutual instruction" or the "Bell–Lancaster method" after the British educators Andrew Bell and Joseph Lancaster who both independently developed it. The method was based on the abler pupils being used as 'helpers' to the teacher, passing on the information they had learned to other students.  Andrew Bell   was a Scottish Episcopalian priest and educationalist who pioneered the Madras System of Education in schools. Egmore, in 1796, was the site of the Military Male Orphan Asylum near Madras. This asylum was headed by Andrew Bell, who invented the Madras System for schooling there.  

In last century Egmore was famous for its Railway station – the Egmore Railway Station was the main terminus of the Madras and Southern Mahratta Railway and later, the metre gauge section of the Southern division of the Indian Railways. It continues to be an important railway junction.  Egmore has the famous Government Museum, Police Museum, Chidlrens’ Hospital, Eye Hospital, Rajarathnam stadium, Cooptex and more.  The century old Railway station  stands on a historic site, where the East India Company converted a standing choultry into a fortified redoubt, early in the 18th Century. It later served as a sanatorium for soldiers and then in the 1800s as a Government Press.  The station reportedly was built at a cost of 17 lakhs in 1908.  

ஸ்ரீவைணவம் ஒரு எளிய மார்க்கம்.  நாம் வாழ்வின் காரணமே நம் எம்பெருமான்.  நம் செய்யவேண்டியது - அவ்வெம்பெருமானையே நினைத்து அவனுக்கே கைங்கர்யங்கள் செய்து, அவன் பெயரை எப்போதும் நாத்தன்னால் நவில உரைத்து, அவன் தாள்களை பற்றி அவனிடம் சேர்வதே ! .. .  

மாயோன்!    மாயோன் என்றாலே மணிநீர் நிறக்  கண்ணபிரான். . .. ஆநிரைக்கு வேண்டிய புல்லும் ஆயர்க்கு வேண்டிய வான வாரி அல்லது புன்செய்ப் பயிர்களும் வளர்வதற்கு மழை வேண்டியிருப்பதாலும், மேகத்தை வானத்தோடொப்பக் கொண்டதினாலும், முல்லை நிலத்தார் தங்கள் தெய்வத்தைக் கருமையானதென்று கருதி, மாயோன் என்றும் மால் என்றும் பெயரிட்டனர். திருமால் என்பதில் திரு என்பது அடைமொழி.  

மாயோன் உறையுடமிடம் அற்புத திருமலை திருப்பதி.  முன்னொரு காலத்தில் திருமலை அடர்ந்த காடு, கொடிய வனவிலங்குகள் உலாவுமிடம் - அங்கே சென்று சேவிப்பது கடினம்.  ஆனால் திருவேங்கடமுடையான் பற்பல இடங்களிலே நமக்கு சேவை சாதித்து அருள்கிறான்.  இதோ இங்கே ஸ்வாமி நம்மாழ்வாரின் திருவாய்மொழி பாசுரம் :  

அண்ணல் மாயன் அணிகொள்  செந்தாமரைக்

கண்ணன், செங்கனிவாய்க்  கருமாணிக்கம்,

தெண்ணிறைச் சுனைநீர்த்  திருவேங்கடத்து,

எண்ணில் தொல்புகழ் வானவர்  ஈசனே.  

மிகமிக  அழகு பொருந்திய செந்தாமரை மலர் போன்ற திருக்கண்களையுடையவனும்,  சிவந்த கனிபோன்ற அதரத்தையுடையவனும், நீலரத்னம்போல் திருமேனி விளக்கத்தையுடையவனும், தெளிவையும் நிறைவையுமுடைய சுனைநீர் பொருந்திய  திருவேங்கடம் எனும் திருமலை திருப்பதியில்   எண்ணிறந்த நித்திய கல்யாண குணங்களையுடையவனும் நித்யஸூரிகட்குத் தலைவனுமான எம்பெருமான் - நமக்கு ஸ்வாமியான மாயோன் திருவேங்கடமுடையான் நின்று நமக்கு சேவை சாதிக்கிறான்.  அவன் திருப்பாதம் கண்ட அக்கணமே, அவனது இருப்பிடத்துக்கு சென்று தொழுத அக்கணமே நம் கெடு வினைகள் எல்லாமே மாயமாக மறைந்து போகும்.  

Egmore which perhaps originated from Elumburu has reference in Chola inscriptions as Ezhumur. It was the headquarters of a geographical division called Ezhumur Nadu, which was situated in Puliyur Kottam.  On the Egmore High Road from Hotel Matsya junction to WUS – stands an ancient ‘Srinivasa Perumal temple’ which is more than 600 years old.   The beautiful templs is on LNP Kovil Street on the banks of river Koovum. LNP expands as Lakshmi Narayana Perumal Kovil Street.  Inside the majestic gopuram, there is sannathi of Padmavathi thayar and on the side is the main sanctorum for Lord Sreenivasar.

Vasanthothsavam 4 - Name of Emperuman is the pleasure to ears !!

Muthuveerappan, an idler from Karamadai, falls in love with Devayani, daughter of Carnatic musician Krishnamurthy Shastri. To lure her, Muthu pretends to learn music from Shastri.  Muthu moves  to Madras to earn money and enters a competition with accompaniment of table player Ravikanth . .. under stage name ‘Veera’ !!  - a comedy film starring Rajnikanth, Senthil,  Meena and Roja, reproduction of Allari Mogudu.  Not anything on the film portrayal of a  man who marries twice  but a post on music to ears !! 

ஒலி அலைகள் வெளிப்புற காது புறவழி மற்றும் புறச்செவிக் குழாய் வழியாகப் பயணித்து உட்செவியிலுள்ள நாள நரம்புக்கு கடத்தப்படுகின்றன. பின் இந்த நரம்பு தகவலை மூளையின் தற்காலிக மடலுக்கு அனுப்புகிறது. புறச்செவி வழியாகப் பயணித்து வந்த ஒலி அலைகள் செவிப்பறையை அடைகின்றன.. .. ..  காது அல்லது செவி (Ear) என்பது ஒரு புலனுறுப்பு ஆகும். இது இரு முக்கிய ஆனால் வேறுபட்ட புலன்களை நமக்கு அளிக்கிறது. அவை கேட்டல், சமநிலைப் படுத்துதல் என்பவையாகும். செவிகளால் உணரப்படும் ஒலி நமது சுற்றுப்புறத்தைக் குறித்த தகவல்களை நமக்கு அளிக்கிறது. நாம் அதனுடன் தொடர்பு கொள்ள உதவுகிறது. நாம் கீழே விழாமல் நிமிர்ந்த நிலையில் நிற்பதற்கு தேவையான சமநிலையை காதுகள் நமக்கு அளிக்கின்றன.  

பாலூட்டிகளின் காது பொதுவாக மூன்று பகுதிகளாகப் பிரிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது. அவை புறச்செவி, நடுச்செவி, உட்செவி என்பனவாகும். . காது என்ற சொல் பெரும்பாலும் வெளிப்புறமாகத் தெரியும் புறச்செவியையே குறிப்பதாகக் கருதப்படுகிறது. செவிக்கு இன்பமானது  யாது ?  -  இன்று ஒரு திருக்குறள்.  மாந்தர்க்கு தம் மக்கள் கூறும் மழலை சொற்கள், பொருள் தந்தாலும் அல்லாவிடினும் இன்பம் பயக்க வல்லது என்கிறார் செந்நாப்போதார். : 

மக்கள்மெய் தீண்டல் உடற்கின்பம் மற்று  அவர்

சொற்கேட்டல் இன்பம் செவிக்கு. 

தம் குழந்தைகளைத் தழுவி மகிழ்வது உடலுக்கு இன்பத்தையும், அந்தக் குழந்தைகளின் மழலை மொழி கேட்பது செவிக்கு இன்பத்தையும் வழங்கும் என்கிறார் வள்ளுவர். 

The adage – ‘music to one’s ears’ means something pleasing.  Elsewhere, the sounds of sloshing lava are music to a volcanologist's ears. The reverberating belches and burps can help reveal what's going on deep within a volcano's belly. Putting an ear to the Kīlauea volcano in Hawaii has allowed researchers to track the temperature of magma and the migration of volcanic gasses as they bubble to the surface.  For 10 years, between 2008 and 2018, the Kīlauea volcano experienced gentle eruptions of lava on a near-continuous basis.  Then, suddenly, two dozen vents above the east rift zone exploded, shooting fountains of molten rock into the air. The eruption was followed by several years of silence, until September of 2021, when the oozing of lava began again.

Kīlauea is often said to be the most active volcano in the world, and much of that fussiness comes from within the Halema'uma'u crater. This crater sits on the top of the volcano and is filled with a lake of lava. The lava lake is thought to be constantly topped up by an underground chamber of magma. But how those deeper dynamics work is still largely unknown.  By positioning seismic sensors around the crater, researchers are hoping to penetrate the boiling hot abyss.

The Sound of Music released in 1965 made waves – the movie   directed by Robert Wise, and starring Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer, was an adaptation of the 1959 stage musical of the same name, composed by Richard Rodgers with lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II.   Based on the 1949 memoir The Story of the Trapp Family Singers by Maria von Trapp, the film is about a young Austrian postulant in Salzburg, Austria, in 1938 who is sent to the villa of a retired naval officer and widower to be governess to his seven children  After bringing love and music into the lives of the family, she marries the officer and, together with the children, finds a way to survive the loss of their homeland to the Nazis.  In 1966, the movie was the  highest-grossing film of all-time—surpassing Gone with the Wind—and held that distinction for five years.  The Sound of Music received five Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director, Wise's second pair of both awards, the first being from the 1961 film West Side Story. 

Perhaps we have drifted much – it is all about what makes our ears happy – and what in life should we be doing.  Today 6^th June 2022 is day 4 of Vasanthothsavam at Thiruvallikkeni and Sri Parthasarathi Emperuman had periya mada veethi purappadu.  It was Thirumazhisai azhwar’s Nanmukhan thiruvanthathi in the arulicheyal goshti. 

செவிக்கின்பம் ஆவதுவும் செங்கண்மால் நாமம்,

புவிக்கும் புவியதுவே கண்டீர்,- கவிக்கு

நிறைபொருளாய் நின்றானை நேர்பட்டேன், பார்க்கில்

மறைப்பொருளும் அத்தனையே தான். 

நம் காதுகளுக்கு இனிமையாக ஒலிக்க வல்லது எம்பெருமான் ஸ்ரீமன் நாராயணின் திருநாமங்கள் மட்டுமே !   அந்த இனிய திருநாமமே  இப்பூவுலகில்  வசிப்பவரெல்லாம் கவலையற்று  ஒதுங்குவதற்கு  இடமாகவும் அமையும்.  மகா புருஷனான ஸ்ரீமன் நாராயணன் ஒருவன் மட்டுமே பாசுரத்திற்கு நிறைந்த பொருளாயிருப்பவன் .  அவனையே தெய்வாதீனமாக அடையப்பெற்றேன், ஆராய்ந்து பார்த்தால் வேதங்களில் தேர்ந்த பொருளும் அவ்வளவே.
