Sri Andal Kanu Purappadu !!!!

At Thiruvallikkeni and in all other divyadesams, in the month of Margazhi it is ‘Dhanur vizha’ – every day there is rendering of Sri Andal’s thiruppavai (there are discourses too on Thiruppavai and so many places by learned people).  In this month occurs the 9 day Neeratta uthsavam and on Bhogi there is Thirukalyana mahotsav of Andal with Namperumal and the next Sankranthi day, there is Urgola uthsavam.  

The divine  month of Margazhi is over – Andal Neeratta Uthsavam is complete – after Bhogi Thirukalyanam and Sankranthi urgola uthsaam – today is Kanu parvettai.   In Tamil Nadu, Pongal is a great festival – after Bhogi, Pongal, 3rd day is celebrated as Kanum Pongal.  After Sankranthi, comes ‘Kanu Uthsavam’ [Kanum Pongal] ~ in the morning there is purappadu of Andal and in the evening Sri Parthasarathi Kanu parvettai purapapdu.     

மார்கழி மாதம் கண்ணனுக்கு பிடித்த மாதம்.  தனுர் மாதம் என கொண்டாடப்படும் இம்மாதத்தின் எல்லா நாட்களிலும் ஸ்ரீஆண்டாளின் திருப்பாவை சேவிக்கப் பெறுகிறது. மேலும் திருப்பாவையின் உரை உபன்யாசங்களும் பல்வேறு இடங்களிலும் நடத்தப்பெறுகின்றன. மார்கழியில்  ஆண்டாள் நீராட்ட உத்சவம் ஒன்பது நாட்கள் சிறப்புற நடைபெறுகிறது.  போகி அன்று திருக்கல்யாணமும், சங்கராந்தி அன்று ஊர்கோல உத்சவமும், மறுநாள் காலை கனு புறப்பாடும் ஆண்டாளுக்கு விமர்சையாக நடைபெறுகிறது.  காலை ஸ்ரீஆண்டாள் நீராட்ட மண்டபத்தில் திருப்பாவை சாற்றுமுறை நடந்து,  பிரசாதங்களுக்கு பின் ஹம்ச வாகனத்தில் புறப்பாடு கண்டு அருள்கிறார்.   

பொங்கல் முடிந்த மறு நாள்  கனுப்பண்டிகை கொண்டாடி, பெண்கள் தங்கள் சகோதரர்கள் நலனை வேண்டி புள்ளினங்களுக்கு  விருந்து வைக்கும் வழக்கம் உள்ளது. நம் பாரதத்தில் கொண்டாடப்படும் பல பண்டிகைகள் உறவுகள் சிறக்க செய்யும் வழிப்பாட்டு முறைகள்.  

On this day crowds would swell at all important places be it Guindy park, Vandalur zoo, Marina beach and more – as tens of thousands of people would gather, Chennai Police would make elaborate arrangements at Marina beach and would have tough time controlling people ensuring that they do not bathe in sea, just to prevent any untoward incidents.  In the past few years have seen that  nearly 15,000 police personnel, in uniform and plain clothes, being  deployed across the city and Marina Beach.

Ever since Mar 2020, all talks lead to Covid only !  - the whole World continues to live under fear though every now and then, there is ray of hope of it getting over !  now is it the third wave or ?  -  Delhi reported 24,383 new Covid-19 infections on Friday, with the number dropping by over 4,000 in comparison to the previous day’s tally of over 28,800 cases that crossed the peak of infections reported in a single day during the delta variant-driven wave in April-May last year. The drop in the numbers on Friday, however, was due to fewer tests being conducted in the capital. The positivity rate, the proportion of samples that return positive, continued its upward trend to 30.6% on Friday. There were only 79,578 tests conducted on Thursday, as reported a day later in Friday’s bulletin, of which just over 64,000 or 80% were conducted using the more accurate molecular methods like RT-PCR and CBNAAT. The reduction in the number of tests, officials say, is because of the change in the ICMR testing guidelines that no longer allows testing on demand. Only those who are symptomatic, have high-risk contacts, or need to travel outside India are to be tested. 98,832 tests had been conducted a day earlier.

Amid the sharp rise in COVID-19 cases across the country, the one question on everyone's mind is – when will this wave peak and end?   Chennai city on Thursday reported an all-time high of 8,218 new Covid-19 cases, nearly a quarter of the total samples tested. But doctors, paramedics and public health administrators aren’t worried because unlike the peak in May 2021, there were no long queues outside hospitals or shortage of oxygen and lifesaving drugs.  We live on hopes amidst statistics which can be interpreted in every possible way !!  Back home in the State, the TN Govt, has closed Marina beach already and in a single stroke closed access of devotees to worship in Temples from 14^th (the all important Pongal) till 18^th (Thai Poosam)!  .. .. thus there would be no Kanu purappadu nor would we be able to go inside and worship Godapiratti.  Sad !!
