செங்கோல் (scepter) என்பது அரசுச் சின்னங்களுள் ஒன்றாகும். மன்னனுக்கு மகுடமும், அரியணையும் போன்றே செங்கோலும் இன்றியமையாததாகும். மன்னனின் ஆட்சி நேர்மையானதாகவும், நெறி வழுவாததாகவும் அமைய வேண்டும் என்பதன் பொருட்டே செங்கோல் எனும் நேரிய தண்டு அரசன் வீற்றிருக்கும் போதெல்லாம் கையில் காணப்படும் .

Almost everyone has heard of Samsung, Sony and LG, but fewer people have heard of Sceptre.  Sceptre is Walmart's top-selling TV brand. Small wonder given the eye-catching prices of the Sceptre TV range. Some Sceptre 4K TVs go for less than $300, but prices can dip below $100 for a HD.  In fact, it might surprise you to know that the California-based consumer electronics brand has been around since 1984, the year that Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom opened in theaters across America.   From its earliest beginnings in 1984 until the mid-90s, Sceptre exclusively specialized in manufacturing and selling computer monitors. As a play on words that represents its focus on computer monitors (monitor lizard), Sceptre adopted the Komodo dragon as its mascot, and named it Brutus.  The company regularly donated a substantial amount of its proceeds to the Zoological Society of San Diego.

A sceptre is a staff or wand held in the hand by a ruling monarch as an item of royal or imperial insignia. Figuratively, it means royal or imperial authority or sovereignty… ..  to us ‘Sengol’ is of higher significance.  Sceptre has assumed a significant role in many mythologies.  It had a  central role in the Mesopotamian world, and was in most cases part of the royal insignia of sovereigns and gods.   The Mesopotamian sceptre was mostly called ĝidru in Sumerian and ḫaṭṭum in Akkadian. The ancient Tamil work of Tirukkural dedicates one chapter each to the ethics of the sceptre. According to Valluvar, "it was not his spear but the sceptre which bound a king to his people."  Where a King whose righteous laws regards, the scepter wields, there falls the showers, there lies rich abundance in the fields, making subjects happy !  

பருவத்தே மழை பெய்தாலும் நல்ல விளைச்சலும் உள்ள நாடு சுபிக்ஷத்துடன் விளங்கும்.  நல்ல மன்னர் நேர்மைத்திறனுடன் ஆட்சி செய்தால் அந்நாடு வளம் பெரும்.  திருவள்ளுவர் தம் வாக்கு இங்கே :

இயல்புளிக் கோலோச்சும் மன்னவன் நாட்ட

பெயலும் விளையுளும் தொக்கு.

நீதி முறைப்படி செங்கோல் செலுத்தும் அரசனுடைய நாட்டில் பருவ மழையும் நிறைந்த விளைவும் ஒருசேர ஏற்படுவனவாகும்.   ஸுகாஸீநம்  ~  அதி ஆனந்தமாக எந்த உபத்ரவமேதும் இல்லாமல் இருக்கும் இடம் ! ~ எது என்ற கேள்விக்கே இடமில்லை ..... நம்பெருமாள்  பள்ளிகொண்ட திருவரங்கமே !!

நம்பெருமாள் திருவரங்கர் ஒரு மாட்சிமை பொருந்திய மகா சக்கரவர்த்தி.  அரசர்களுக்கு எல்லாம் அரசர்.  முதலாம் சுந்தரபாண்டியன்   என்ற அரசன் ஸ்ரீரங்கநாதனிடம் அளவிடமுடியாத பிரேமை கொண்டவன்.  அவனது கைங்கர்யங்களுள் திலகமாய் ஜொலிப்பது,  ப்ரணாவாகார விமானம் பொன் வேய்ந்தது.    சுந்தரபாண்டியன் திருவரங்கத்தில் எண்ணற்ற ஆபரணங்களை சமர்ப்பித்தார்.  சுந்தர பாண்டிய அரசனின் மற்றொரு கைங்கரியம் நம்பெருமாள் அணிந்து கொள்ளும் “பாண்டியன் கொண்டை”.  வைகுண்ட ஏகாதசி அன்றும் உபயநாச்சியார்களோடு திருச்சி  எழுந்தருளும் போதும் இந்த பாண்டியன் கொண்டை சாற்றிக்கொள்கிறார்.  

இத்தகைய வடிவழகிய கொண்டையை  ஸ்ரீபார்த்தசாரதி எம்பெருமானும் - தவன  உத்சவத்தில் ஓர் நாள்; கோடை உத்சவத்தில் ஓர்நாள்; சுவாமி மணவாள  மாமுனிகள் உத்சவத்தில் ஓர் நாள்; இராப்பத்து உத்சவத்தில் ஒரு நாள் -  பாண்டியன் கிரீடம் அணிந்து, கையில் செங்கோலுடன் சேவை சாதிக்கிறார்.

அரசர்களுக்கு எல்லாம் பேரரசனான நம்பெருமாள் ஸ்ரீரங்கநாதர், அவர் உறையும் திருவரங்கம் சிறப்பு  பற்றி திருமங்கைமன்னனின் திருமொழி பாசுரம் இங்கே :

பொன்னு மாமணியும் முத்தமும் சுமந்து பொருதிரை மாநதி புடைசூழ்ந்து*,

அன்னமாடுலவும் அலைபுனல் சூழ்ந்த அரங்கமாநகர் அமர்ந்தானை*

மன்னுமாமாட மங்கையர் தலைவன் மானவேற் கலியன்  வாயொலிகள்

பன்னிய பனுவல் பாடுவார் நாளும்  பழவினை பற்றறுப்பாரே. 

பொன்களையும் சிறந்த ரத்தினங்களையும் முத்துக்களையும் திரட்டிக்கொண்டு  அலையெறிந்துகொண்டு வருகின்ற பெரியநதியாகிய திருக்காவேரியினால் இரு பக்கமும் சூழப்பெற்றும், பக்கங்களிலே அன்னப்பறவைகள் உலாவப்பெற்ற அலைகொண்ட தடாகங்களினால் சூழப் பெற்றுமிருக்கின்ற  திருவரங்கம் பெரிய கோயிலில்  பொருந்தியுள்ள பெருமானைக்குறித்து, சாச்வதமான பெரிய மாடங்களையுடைய திருமங்கையில் உள்ளார்க்குத் தலைவரும் சிறந்த வேலாயதத்தையுடையவருமான  திருமங்கை மன்னன்  விஸ்தரித்தருளிச் செய்த இப்பாசுரங்களை பாடுமவர்கள், முற்பிறவிபயனான தோஷங்கள் கூட நீங்கி, எந்த கடினங்களும் இன்றி ஆனந்தமாக இருப்பார்கள்.
