One hundred and two years
ago ! ~ in 1918 occurred a big tragedy
that claimed 50 million lives ! The population those days was about a quarter the size of what it is
today and infectious diseases were still the main killer of people. It was a
world that didn't know viruses very well. The first virus had been identified
at the end of the 19th Century. So we had germ theory and people understood
that microbes caused infectious diseases, but almost every doctor in the world
thought they were dealing with a bacterial disease.
It was called ‘Spain flu’ – unjust because it didn't start in Spain. There were cases in US,
Britain, France and probably some other European countries before it was in
Spain. Spain was neutral in the war so
it didn’t censor its press. And when the first cases broke out there in the
spring of 1918, the newspapers reported on them, whereas in these other countries,
it was kept out of the news. Those first Spanish cases included Alfonso XIII,
the King of Spain, and the name stuck. .. .. and compare it with the present ..
.. ‘it started in Wuhan and WHO ensured that the name Covid 19 had no reference
to China !

Covid has
affected the mankind in a big way .. .. India,
with over 9 lakh infections, is the third worst-hit country in the world after
the United States (3,363,056) and Brazil (1,884,967). What generally is not getting highlighted
here is the fact that in India
while 3,11,565 patients are
undergoing treatment, a higher no. of people - 5,71,460 have recovered. Since the start of
this month, 25,866 Covid-19 patients have recovered in Chennai, while the total
number of fresh cases has only been 19,971, official data released by the Tamil
Nadu government shows.
As global cases
of the novel coronavirus crossed the 13 million mark Tuesday, the World Health
Organization (WHO) warned the pandemic would get “worse and worse and worse” if
the basics weren’t followed. Director Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said the
spread of the disease was worsening in many countries and “there will be no
return to the old normal for the foreseeable future”. Over 572,000 people have
died from the virus worldwide. WHO has been sounding negative and has faltered
many a times including hailing China earlier on the way they handled Corona,
which has irritated US and Trump beyond a point.
Amid the rising
coronavoirus COVID-19 cases in India and other parts of the world, Russia's
Sechenov University claimed on Sunday (July 12) that it had successfully completed
the world's first clinical trials of coronavirus vaccine on humans. But experts
are now raising doubts over the claim made by Sechenov University.

தாமரைப்பூப்போன்றவை; திருக்கைத்தலங்களும் அத்தாமரைப் பூப்போன்றவையே;
இவ்வையமளந்த திருவடிகளும் அத்தாமரைப் பூப்போன்றவையே.
கண்ணும்
கைத்தமும் மண்ணளந்த பாதமும் கமலமே - அவ்வளவு சிறப்பு வாய்ந்த எம்பெருமான் தாள்களையே
பணிந்து அவனிடம் சேர்ந்து இன்புறுவோமாக !
