In the grand Brahmothsavam, each Vahanam, every purappadu has its  own charm, yet, if one were to ask the most majestic and most crowd-pulling ones,  it would be Thiruther and Garuda vahanam. !!  .. .. ..  The Brahminy kite  is considered to be the contemporary representations of Garuda; Indonesia adopts a more stylistic approach  depicting a Javanese eagle (being much larger than a kite).

In the ongoing Brahmothsavam at Thiruvallikkeni divyadesam today  21.4.2019  is the third day – a very important day ~ it is Garuda Vahanam for Perumal.  Garuda is depicted as having the golden body of a strong person, has a white face, wings,  prominent beak, wears a crown – massive, strong – and more than anything else – ever devoted to Sriman Narayanan, carrying Him on his shoulders all the time. His devotion and being close to Emperuman all the time – Garuda, is admired as ‘Periya Thiruvadi’

எம்பெருமானுக்கு எப்போதும் கைங்கர்யம் செய்யும் கருடாழ்வார் பெரிய திருவடி என சிறப்பிக்கப்படுகிறார்.  அழகான பட்டு உடுத்திய கருடனின் மீது பெருமாள் எழுந்து அருளும் கருட சேவை மிக அழகும் கம்பீரமும் நிறைந்தது.   கருடன், காச்யபர் என்கிற மகரிஷிக்கும் வினதைக்கும் பிறந்தவர்.  'வினதை சிறுவன்' என பெரியாழ்வார் மங்களாசாசனம்.  வினதையின் மற்றொரு புதல்வன் அருணன், சூரியனுக்கு தேரோட்டி என்றும் ஐதீஹம். 

நாவாயில் உண்டே*  'நமோநாரணா' என்று,*

ஓவாது உரைக்கும் உரை உண்டே,* - மூவாத-

மாக்கதிக்கண் செல்லும்*  வகை உண்டே,*  என் ஒருவர்-

தீக்கதிக்கண் செல்லும் திறம்?

பக்தியோகம் ஒரு எளிய மார்க்கம்.  எம்பெருமானின் தாள் பணிந்து அவனை அடைவதே நம் லட்சியம்.  நற்கதி பெற என்ன செய்யவேண்டும் என்ற கேள்வி எழுகிறதா ? 

மிக எளிய உபாயம். மிக எளிமையாக  செய்யக்கூடியது. நம்மிடமே இருக்கும் அவயங்களை உபயோகிப்பது!  நாம் உண்பதற்கும், உணர்வதற்கும், உரைப்பதற்கும் உள்ளது நாக்கு.  நாம் சொல்லும் நாமம் – ஓம் நமோ நாராயணா எனும் திருவஷ்டாக்ஷரம். நாம் அறிந்த எளியவன் நாராயணனாகிய எம்பெருமான். இப்படி உயர்வான எம்பெருமானை ஏத்துகைக்கென்று ஏற்பட்ட நாவைக் கொண்டு  -அவனை மட்டுமே உயர்வாக உரைப்போம்.  மந்தமதிப்புவி மானிடர்கள்,  உபயோகமற்ற விஷயங்களைச் சொல்லுகைக்கு தங்கள் நாவை உபயோகித்து அநர்த்தப்படுகின்றார்களே! இஃது என்ன ஆச்சரியம்! என்று ஆழ்வார் வியக்கின்றார். உண்ணும்சோறு, பருகும்நீர், சொல்லும்சொல்,  எண்ணும்எண்ணம். எல்லாம் நாராயணனே என்று ஓயாமல் துதிப்போம். களைப்பில்லாமல், வேறுஸ்மரணை இல்லாமல் திரும்ப திரும்ப சொல்வோம் 'நமோநாராயணா ' என்ற நாமம்.  அந்த திருமந்திரம் நம்மை திரும்பப் பிறவாமல்  வைகுண்டத்திற்கு இட்டுச் செல்லும். ~ பொய்கைப்பிரான், முதல்திருவந்தாதி.

  

Here are some photos taken  at Thiruvallikkeni during the Garuda Sevai purappadu.   At 05.30 am, people waited to have the glimpse of Lord coming out of Gopura vasal, then there was the ‘aesal’ – halt at Gangaigondan – the purappadu takes so many hours and the lengthy duration only benefits the devotees, as they could have darshan of Lord on Garuda.
