Heard of ‘Chrysopogonzizanioides’ and wonder what is has to do with
a Temple related post, especially one on the last day of Sri Parthasarathi
Swami Brahmothsavam at Thiruvallikkeni.
On the concluding day of Brahmothsavam is - ‘Siriya Thiruther’
famously known as ‘Vettiver Chapparam’… occurring after ‘Sapthavaranam’- ‘dwadasaaradhanam’.It is an exceptional site to
have darshan of five Emperumans at one place ~ and at around 8.45 pm, Alwars,
Acaryas and Perumals had purappadu back to their sannathi. At 9.30 pm Sri
Parthasarathi Perumal had purappadu in siriya thiruther – whence
Thiruvarangathu Amuthanaar’s ‘ Ramanuja Noorranthathi’ was
rendered.
பாருருவில் நீரெரிகால்
விசும்புமாகிப் பல்வேறு சமயமுமாய்ப் பரந்துநின்ற**
ஏருருவில் மூவருமேயென்ன
நின்ற, இமையவர்தந் திருவுரு வேறெண்ணும்போது**
ஓருருவம் பொன்னுருவம்
ஒன்று செந்தீ ஒன்றுமாகடலுருவம் ஒத்துநின்ற,**
மூவுருவும் கண்டபோதொன்றாம்சோதி
முகிலுருவம் எம்மடிகள் உருவந்தானே ***.
Thirumangaimannan, in his Thirunedunthandagam, sings of the
glory of Sriman Narayana - to him, the most benevolent Sriman
Narayana when contemplated, appears as the tri-murti of this fair universe and
the gods, the sun and the Moon, the mighty ocean, the formless elements Earth,
fire, water, air and space, and the various schools the theology, The Lord who
pervades ALL ~ the most unique Sriman Narayana is my
master. He is the dark cloud-hued one who protects us all.
இந்திரன், சந்திரன், வருணன், குபேரன் என்று பலப்பல தெய்வங்கள் இருந்தாலும்
விஷ்ணு, பிரமன், சிவன் என்கிற மூன்று மூர்த்திகளே முக்கியமாக வழங்கப்பெறும்; அம்மூன்றுமூர்த்திகளின்
உருவங்களை ஆராயுமிடத்தில், ஒருவனுடைய (நான்முகனுடைய) வடிவம் பொன்னின்
வடிவாகவுள்ளது; மற்றொருவனுடைய (பரமசிவனுடைய) வடிவம் சிவந்த நெருப்பின் வடிவாகவுள்ளது;
இன்னுமொருவனுடைய (ஸ்ரீமந்நாராயணனுடைய) வடிவம் கருங்கடல் போன்றுள்ளது. மேற்சொன்ன மும்மூர்த்திகளையும் பிரமாணங்கொண்டு பரிசீலனை
செய்யுமிடத்து, பஞ்சபூதங்களையுண்டாக்கியும் பலவகைப்பட்ட சமயங்களையுயைம் ஜகத்தையும்
ஸ்ருஷ்டித்தும் ஸ்ருஷ்டிக்கப்பட்ட ஜகத்திலே அந்தர்யாமியாய் வியாபித்தும் நிற்கிற பரஞ்சோதியான
எம்பெருமானுடைய உருவம் காளமேகவுருவமாயிருக்கும் என்று சொல்லுகிறபடியால் முகிலுருவமுடையவனே
எம்பெருமான் என்றாயிற்று.
On Sapthavaranam day 28.4.2019, it is ‘siriya Thiruther’ famously
known as ‘VettiverChapparam’… the scientific name of vettiveris - ‘Chrysopogonzizanioides’, a type of grass of Poaceae family, native
to India. Also known as ‘khus’ Vettiver can grow up to 1.5
metres high and form clumps as wide. This Ther is known as ‘VettiverChapparam’
– as it would have many sheets made of
this grass placed on the temple car. One could feel the divine fragrance
from a distance itself. These vettiver mats were earlier even
used in houses and as the air passes through it, there would be fragrance and
natural cooling of air.
A couple of years back, plantation of vettiver
grass to check soil erosion was renamed as Sabujayan project by West
Bengal Chief Minister. Nearer home, the traditional weavers of Anakaputhur
turned to ‘vettiver’ as raw material for a fabric, after trying their hands at
several natural fibres, including aloe vera, coconut husk, banana, and jute.
They were marketing sarees made out of vettiver .. .. one may try them too. Here are some photos taken during the purappadu.
