Aippaisi Magam ~ Thirumazhisaippiran masa Nakshathiram .. .. avathara sthalam

Not all plants are edible ~ yet there is so much of variety !  Humans have cultivated those few that were edible and nutritious or good tasting, and have selectively bred them over thousands of years for a variety of traits including size, flavor, and color. We have also moved them around a lot! The geographic region from which our food crops originated is not always obvious from their present day distribution.  There is also apprehension that genetically modified food (GMO) is taking over the market despite their many dangers to health and environment, as there are invigorated campaigns on the  need for fresh and organically produced vegetables.

Vegetables, fruits, plants, herbs, roots are not something new ! – there are evidences dating back to   the cooking pots of the Harappans (2600 BC).   The state agriculture department at Jharkhand  is working on a plan to fix minimum support price (MSP) for vegetables, similar to paddy.   Jharkhand is a vegetable surplus state, producing over 30 lakh metric tonne annually, as per the department’s data. For the first time in August, the agriculture department, through the Agriculture Produce Marketing Committee (APMC), tied up with a private agency - All Seasons Farm Fresh, to export over a tonne of vegetables for Dubai after procuring directly from the farmers. They consignment included 300kg bitter gourd, 50kg ladies finger, 150kg bottle gourd, 50kg French beans, 100 kg coccinia grandis (kundru), among others.

Back home, the metropolis of Chennai which too has a long history has depended on Kothawal chavadi in Parrys area for its vegetable needs.  Of course there have been local markets like the erstwhile famous Thannithurai market of Mylapore. Then in 1996, Govt wanted shops and bus stop to move out of the Esplanade area and vegetable market moved to Koyambedu that housed 3750 licensed shops at that time.  But that market had to be shut in early May 2020 as it  emerged as one of the largest Covid-19 clusters in the country, with over 2,000 cases being traced back to the market. Such was  the spread that Koyambedu that it was blamed for the exponential rise of cases in the nearby districts of Ariyalur, Perambalur, Cuddalore, Villupuram, Chengalpet, Tiruvallur and even parts of neighbouring Andhra Pradesh.

At that time the Govt moved the wholesale vegetable market to neighbouring Thirumazhisai ~ that has great religious significance for Srivaishnavaites.

Now, wholesale prices of vegetables have fallen further this week after a spike in arrivals of supplies at the Koyambedu Wholesale Market Complex (KWMC) from neighbouring states.  In a related development, the vegetable shops at Koyambedu will be shut on Sunday instead of the weekly closure on Friday for maintenance.

For Srivaishnavaites, Azhwaars and their birthdays  are of great significance.    Bhakthisarar,  well known as Thirumazhisai Azhwar was born in Thirumazhisai and hence is hailed as Thirumazhisai Piran.  This  place is near Poonamallee around 20 kms away from Chennai on the Bangalore High Road. Thirumazhisaippiran’s  works are : Naanmukhan Thiruvanthathi (96) and Thiruchanda Virutham (120).  He was born in the Magam nakshathiram of Thai month.  Today 9.11.2020  is Aippaisi Magam, masa nakshathira celebrations of the Azhwar.

Sri Adhi Jagannatha Perumal Temple at Thirumazhisai is more than 1000 years old, is built in the Dravidian style of architecture. There are many inscriptions in Tamil inside the temple that date back to the Chola period and Vijayanagara period. The inscriptions indicate gift of land, lamps and houses to the temple.   The oldest inscription belongs to Kulothunga Chola III (1179-1216 CE), which indicates gift of land to the temple by one Vijaya Gandagopala, a chieftain. Also found are inscriptions belonging to the Kopperunchenganan during the 13th century, Harhara Raya II (1377-1404 CE) and Virupaksha Rayaii (1465-85 CE), rulers of the Vijayanagara empire.
