Jal Narayan at Swarnagiri - Hyderabad

For Srivaishnavaites – Thiruvarangam is Booloka Vaikuntham and a glimpse of Emperuman   Sri Ranganathar in sayana thirukolam is eternal bliss. 

Hyderabad may be bone dry and hot -  in recent times, there is fresh trouble brewing.  According to the original plan, the Government was to  unveil the new State emblem and the official song penned by noted poet Ande Sri on June 2 during the Telangana formation day celebrations at Parade Grounds. The decision to make changes to the state emblem, the Telangana Thalli statue, the abbreviation from TS to TG, and the release of a new state official song are all projected by opposition  as an attempt by the Government to create its mark overriding and erasing the legacy and footprints of BRS and its chief K Chandrashekar Rao from the history of Telangana. 

According to reports, the government was considering removing the Charminar and Kakatiya arch (Kala Thoranam) from the existing emblem while adding the Telangana martyr symbol. However, the decision to remove Charminar and Kakatiya Arch has met with criticism from the BRS, which had threatened to launch statewide protests. Already, the music to the state official song “Jaya Jaya He Telangana' by Keeravani, who has Andhra roots, was objected to. 

Moving away from controversy, recently in April – the city is blessed with another most beautiful Srinivasa Perumal temple in the outskirts – on the way to  Bhongir (Bhuvanagiri)

Yadadri Tirumala Devasthanam, famously  Swarnagiri Sree Venkateswara Swamy Devasthanam, is situated atop Manepally Hills in Bhuvanagiri, emerging  as a captivating new destination just 47.3 kilometres from Hyderabad and a mere 19.7 kilometres from Sri Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy Temple in Yadadri.  This temple has been built by Manepally Jewellers.  

Miles away,  Budhanilkantha is a municipality in Kathmandu District in the Bagmati Province of Nepal situated at the foot of Shivapuri hill, just 10 kms away from Kathmandu – and it has this beautiful temple dedicated to Sriman Narayana – Jal sayana Narayana – Jal Narayana.  At Swarnagiri too, there is Jal Narayana – here is a picture of Sayana vasa Perumal – more about the beautiful temple later

Sri Devathi Rajar kuthirai vahanam 2024

சிலருக்கு லாட்டரியில் பரிசு விழுகிறது. சிலரை பிரபல டைரக்டர் பஸ் ஸ்டாண்டில் பார்த்து “அடுத்த அமாவாசைக்கு ஷூட்டிங்குக்கு வா” என்கிறார். இப்படித் திடீர் என்று தனிமனிதர்கள் தேர்ந்தெடுக்கப் படுகிறார்கள். ஏதோ ஒரு வகையில் பிரசித்தி பெறுகிறார்கள்.  அம்மாதிரி நானும் பிரசித்தமானேன்.   என தொடங்கிய கதையை படித்து இருப்பீர்கள் !!

Many movies have centred around Horses.  Back a century and two years ago, ‘A Sporting Double’  was  a British silent drama film directed by Arthur Rooke   set in the horse racing world. Two decades ago came ‘Hidalgo’ epic biographical western film based on the legend of the American distance rider Frank Hopkins and his mustang Hidalgo. It recounts Hopkins' racing his horse in Arabia in 1891 against Bedouins riding pure-blooded Arabian horses.  

Horses have been domesticated for centuries and have been traded across Nations.  Imports of horses into India  increased in volume and value during the Vijayanagara period, Military and administrative dominance over the major ports on the Arabian Sea provided Krishna DEvaraya  with a new and different source of state finance that his predecessors ever enjoyed, though exactly how trade profits were appropriated during the fifteenth century cannot now be ascertained. Vijayanagara rulers imported horses from Ormuz !!    and trained  skilled horsemen to use them.  The Kingdom of Ormus  [Hormuz]   was located in the eastern side of the Persian Gulf and extended as far as Bahrain in the west at its zenith.  The Kingdom was established in 11th century  

Back home, in school books we studied the valour of ‘Raja Swarup Singh’ - a Bundela Rajput chieftain, before you wonder who – it is Raja Desingu who commanded Fort Gingee.  Senji in Tamil Nadu has a rich history.   Ballads, stories, puppet shows, dance dramas, stage plays, and therukkoothoo (street plays) have been inspired by the tragic tale of this brave hero of Gingee – Desingu Raja and his horse Neelaveni.  DEsingu  army consisted of only 350 horses and 500 troopers, while the Nawab’s army had 8,000 horsemen and 10,000 sepoys.  Desingu eventually was killed in the battle.    

In 1960,  film ‘Raja Desingu’ based on this hero’s life, was produced by Lena Chettiar (S. M. Letchumanan Chettiar) under his banner, Krishna Pictures. It was written by Kavingnar Kannadasan  - MG Ramachandran and SSR, Banumathi & Padmini were cast with music of G Ramanathan.    Lyrics were penned by Kannadasan, Udumalai Narayana Kavi, and Thanjai Ramaiah Das.

Trojan horse, huge hollow wooden horse constructed by the Greeks to gain entrance into Troy during the Trojan War. The horse was built by Epeius, a master carpenter and pugilist.   That night Greek warriors emerged from it and opened the gates to let in the returned Greek army. The story is told at length in Book II of the Aeneid and is touched upon in the Odyssey. The term Trojan horse has come to refer to subversion introduced from the outside.  A Trojan horse, or Trojan, is a type of malicious code or software that looks legitimate but can take control of your computer. A Trojan is designed to damage, disrupt, steal, or in general inflict some other harmful action on your data or network

முதல் பாராவில் சொல்லப்பட்டது  - அற்புத எழுத்தாளர் சுஜாதாவின் கதை.  அந்த நாயகன் பிரபலமானது - அவரை ஒரு குதிரை கடித்ததால்.   என்னை ஒரு குதிரை கடித்ததால்!  “குதிரையா?” என்று வியப்புடன் கேட்கிறீர்கள் அல்லவா? உங்களுக்குச் சொல்கிறேன். முதலில் என்னைப் பற்றி. அப்புறம் குதிரையைப் பற்றி.  என்பேர் கிருஷ்ண சாமி அதை கிச்சாமி என்று சுருக்கி மனதில் ஒரு பிம்பம் ஏற்படுத்திப் பாருங்கள். அதேதான் நான். தொழில், தோற்றம் என்று எந்த வகையிலும் எனக்குப் பிரத்தியேகம் கிடையாது. தினப்படி காப்பி குடித்து, பேப்பர் படிதது, துணி மடித்து, பஸ் பிடித்து அங்குலம் அங்குலமாக மாயும் மனித எறும்பு. மனைவி, குழநதை, மாமனார், வாடகை வீடு, பாத்ரூமில் பாட்டு, மண் தொட்டியில் ஒன்றிரண்டு மலர்ச்செடிகள், தவணை முறையில் ரேடியோ என்று பிரகாசமற்ற பிரஜைதான் நான். குதிரை கடிக்கும் வரை! குதிரையும் அவ்வளவு பிரசித்தமில்லாத ஜட்கா வண்டிக் குதிரைதான்.

Moving away from all this – today 27.5.2024 is day 8 of Sri Varadharajar Brahmothsavam  - at  Thirukachi.  At Thiruvallikkenidivyadesam, Sri Varadharaja Perumal was astride   the beautiful gold horse -  Kuthiraivahanam for Devathi Rajar and here are some photos of the purappadu at Thiruvallikkeni.

Thirukachi Devathi Rajar Thiruther 2024

Thiruther is a grandeur occasion ~ thousands of devotees assemble at Kanchipuram to have a glimpse of Sri Devathi Rajan on thiruther. 

 

இன்று 26.5.2024  திருக்கச்சி தேவாதிராஜரின் திருத்தேர் வைபவம்.  காஞ்சி மாநகரத்திலே முன்பெல்லாம் திருத்தேர் திரும்புகைக்கு நாட்கள் கூட ஆகுமாம்.  இப்போது இயந்திரங்கள், மனிதர்கள் உதவியுடன் பெருமாள் தேர் புறப்பாடு சில மணி நேரங்களில் முடிந்து விடுகிறது.  பல்லாயிரக்கணக்கான பக்தர்கள் திருத்தேர் காண வருகை தருகின்றனர்.  காஞ்சியில் தேரன்று பொது விடுமுறை அளிக்கப்படுகின்றது.   - இந்த முறை ஞாயிறுக்கிழமை !

 இன்று ஒரு நகைச்சுவையுடன் ஆரம்பிப்போம் (என் அப்பா என் சிறுவயதில் சொன்னது!) -  கச்சி மூதூர் திரும்பிய இடமெல்லாம் திருக்கோவில்கள், பக்தர்களுக்கு பல இடங்களில் அன்னதானம் நடக்கும்.  ஒரு மழை நாளில் சிலருக்கு சரியாக உணவு கிடைக்காததால் பசி !  -   அவர்கள் திண்ணையில் அமர்ந்திருக்க, அவ்வழி சென்ற ஒரு பக்தன் - கோவில் கோபுரத்தை கண்டு இருகை உயரே தூக்கி "கஞ்சி வரதப்பா'; "கஞ்சி வரதப்பா';  என அகவ, திண்ணையில் இருந்தவன் - (உணவு கஞ்சி) எங்கே வரதப்பா ?  என வினவினான் !! 

'தேரு வருதே'  - திரும்பி படிக்கவும் ..  இது -   மாலைமாற்று அல்லது இருவழியொக்கும் சொல் (Palindrome) - பின்புறமிருந்து படித்தாலும் முன்புறம் படித்ததைப்போலவே பொருள் கொண்ட சொல், தொடர் அல்லது இலக்கம் ஆகும். 

தேர் (திருக்கோவில் உத்சவங்களில் திருத்தேர்) - பண்டைய காலத்தில் இருந்தே மக்களை கவர்ந்து வந்துள்ளது.  மஹாபாரதத்தில் காணப்படும் ‘’ரத, கஜ, துரக, பதாதி’’ என்னும் நால்வகைப் படைகளைக் மிக விவரமாக குறிப்புட்டுள்ளனர்.  பாரதப்போர் தனிலே,  இருதரப்பின் பெரிய மற்றும் அற்புதமான படைகளும்,  தங்கத்தால் அலங்கரிக்கப்பட்ட யானைகளும், தேர்களும், மின்னலுடன் கலந்த மேகங்களைப் போல, அபரிமிதமாக நின்று கொண்டிருந்த தேர் படையணிகள் நகரங்களைப் போலத் தோற்றமளித்தனவாம்.

 

Today, 26.5.2024   is day 7 of Sri Varadharajar   Brahmothsavam – and it was thiruther.  At Thiruvallikkeni  the grand big  Thiruther [chariot] rolls twice – one for Sri Parthasarathi and again for Sri Thelliya singar ….. one will realise its grandeur that of rolling juggernaut, if one were to stand near as the 8 or 9 feet wheel rotates by.  Thiruther is a grand occasion of togetherness of people.  Today it was siriya thiruther for Sri Varadhar ~ at Kanchi the events are much bigger – have heard till a decade or so ago, it would take days for the thiruther to return and it would be a holiday in Kanchi district on the occasion.  

Chariots are impressive  - On screen,  we have seen many – one got enamoured by the scene of Arjuna wading through the forces in Mahabaratha  - those chariots were quite attractive.  Ratha is not only fleet-footed mode during war, it symbolizes energy and zeal to move forward.  It was on the chariot steered by Lord Krishna, Geethopadesam occurred to Arjuna, the mighty warrior.  The rath itself according to legend was given by Agni.  The battle formation was unconceivably bigger ~ by some accounts an Akshauhini is described as a formation consisting of 21870 chariots, 21870 elephants, 65160 cavalry and more than a lakh of infantry.

தமிழ் எழுத்தாளர்களில் ஜாம்பவானாகத் திகழ்ந்தவர் கல்கி ஆர்.கிருஷ்ணமூர்த்தி.  மூதறிஞர் ராஜாஜியின் வலது கரமாகவும் திகழ்ந்தார். சோழர்கள் மற்றும் பல்லவர்களின் பொற்கால ஆட்சியை வாசகர்களின் மனத்தில் நிழலாட வைத்த வரலாற்றுப் புதினங்களான "பொன்னியின் செல்வன்', "சிவகாமியின் சபதம்', "பார்த்திபன் கனவு' போன்றவை அவரது சிறந்த பங்களிப்புகளாகும். தலைமுறை கடந்தும் தமிழர்களை இந்த வரலாற்றுப் புதினங்கள் ஈர்த்து வருகின்றன.  சிவகாமியின் சபதம். 12 வருடங்களாகக் கல்கி வார இதழில் தொடர்கதையாக வெளிவந்த பிறகே ஒரு புதினமாக வெளியிடப்பட்டது.  முதலாம் மகேந்திரவர்ம பல்லவன் அரசாண்ட காலத்தில் நடைபெற்ற சம்பவங்களைப் பயன்படுத்தி எழுதப்பட்ட இப்புதினத்தில் முதலாம் நரசிம்ம பல்லவன் என்ற இளவரசன் முக்கிய இடம் வகிக்கிறார். 

சிவகாமியின் சபதத்தில் - கச்சி மூதூர் விவரிக்கப்படும் பல இடங்களில் இங்கே ஒன்று :  பரஞ்சோதி, ஏகாம்பரநாதர் கோயில் சந்நிதிக்கு வந்ததும் அந்தத் திவ்விய சந்நிதியின் மகோந்நதமான தோற்றத்திலிருந்தே அதுதான் ஏகாம்பரர் கோயிலாயிருக்க வேண்டுமென்று பரஞ்சோதி ஊகித்து தம்முடைய ஊகம் சரிதானா என்று மாமல்லரை வினவினார். "  கொஞ்சம் ரதத்தை நிறுத்தச் சொல்லுங்கள். காஞ்சியின் இருதய ஸ்தானத்தை நன்றாய்ப் பார்க்கிறேன்" என்றார் பரஞ்சோதி.  கோயிலுக்குள்ளே ஒரு தீப வரிசைக்குப்பின் இன்னொரு தீப வரிசையாக முடிவின்றி ஜொலித்துக் கொண்டிருந்த அலங்கார தீபங்களையும் கோயிலுக்கெதிரே கம்பீரமான தேர் நின்ற நாற்சந்தியையும் தேரடியிலிருந்து நாலாபக்கத்திலும் பிரிந்து சென்ற தேரோடும் வீதிகளையும், குன்றுகளைப் போலப் பலவகைப் புஷ்பங்கள் குவிந்து கிடந்த கடைகளையும், தேங்காயும் கதலியும் மலை மலையாகக் குவிந்து கிடந்த கடைகளையும், அற்புதமான சிற்பத்திறமுடைய தூண்களின் மேலே அமைந்த நூற்றுக்கால் மண்டபங்களையும் பரஞ்சோதி பார்த்துவிட்டு, "ஆஹா! புலிகேசியின் காதலுக்குக் காரணம் இல்லாமற் போகவில்லை!" என்றார்.  

அன்றே காஞ்சி நகரத்து வீதிகளும், திருக்கோவில்களுக்கு, தேர்களும் (மன்னர் தம் தேரும் - திருக்கோவில் திருத்தேர்களும்) சிறப்புற இருந்துள்ளன.   பல்லவர் சிறப்பு -கற்தேர்கள்.  கி.பி. ஏழாம் நூற்றாண்டில் மாமல்லபுரத்திலே தனிப் பெரும் கற்பாறைகளைக் குடைந்தும், புராணச் சிறப்புடன் சிற்பங்களைச் செதுக்கியும், ஒற்றைக் கல் கோயில்களாக்கியும் பல்லவர்கள் தமிழகத்திற்குப் பெருமை சேர்த்துள்ளனர்.  இங்கே சிறப்பு பஞ்ச பாண்டவர் ரதங்கள்.  

There have always been evidences that our ancestors were advanced and lived a sophisticated yet contented life .. .. the slow unearthing of evidence only confirms their superiority ..

Swami Nammalwar sarrumurai 2024 - Vaikasi Visakham

As we travel from Thirunelveli towards Tiruchendur – approx. 25 km away – on the banks of Tamirabarani, is this beautiful divyadesam  Thiru Kurugur.  The temple is ‘Aathinadhar Azhwar Thirukovil’. It was one of the largest towns of Pandya dynasty.  The presiding deity is Aathippiran and Utsavar is PolinthuNinraPiran.  Thayar is Aathinaayaki and ThirukurugurNayaki.

Great words of our Acharyar Sri Manavala Maamunigal when hailing the birth of Swami Nammazhwar.   Acharyan Manavalamaamunigal in his ‘Upadesa Rathinamalai’ says :   there is no other day matching Vaikasi Visakam; there is none matching Sadagopar; there is nothing equivalent to ‘Thiruvaimozhi’ and there is no place on earth which can be treated on par to Thirukurugai – the birthplace of Swami Nammalwar.  Today 22^nd May 2024   [Vaikasi 9] is a great day – ‘Vaikasi Visakham’ ~ celebrating the birth of Swami Nammalwar.  

" ஈசன் ஞாலமுண்டுமிழ்ந்த எந்தை யேகமூர்த்திக்கே" ~ என   ஸர்வேச்வரானாயும், ஜகத்துக்கு ஸர்வப்ரகார ரக்ஷகனாயும், அந்தத் தன்மையினால் என்னை யீடுபடுத்திக் கொண்டவனாயும் அத்விதீயமான திருமேனியையுடையவனாயுமிருக்கிற எம்பெருமான்  திருவுள்ளம் பற்றுவதே!  என நமக்கு உபதேசித்த அற்புத ஆசார்யர் ஆழ்வார் ஸ்வாமி  நம்மாழ்வார்  அவதரித்த நன்னாள் இந்நாள் .   

 

திருக்கச்சியிலே ஸ்வாமி நம்மாழ்வார் சன்னதிக்கு தேவப்பெருமாள் எழுந்து அருள்வது விசேஷம்.  நம் திருவல்லிக்கேணியில் ஆழ்வார் சாற்றுமுறை அன்று ஸ்ரீபார்த்தசாரதிப்பெருமாளுடன் பெரிய வீதி புறப்பாடு நடைபெறும்.   ஆயினும் ஆழ்வார் உத்சவம்  ஸ்ரீஅழகிய சிங்கர் ப்ரஹ்மோத்சவத்தில் வரும் போது  ஆழ்வார் அழகியசிங்கருடன் புறப்பட்டு கண்டு அருள்வார்.  சென்ற 2019 வருஷம் இரண்டாம் நாள் இரவு சிம்ம வாஹனம்.  ஒரு அசந்தர்ப்பத்தாலே திருவீதி புறப்பாடு நடைபெறவில்லை.   ஸ்ரீதெள்ளியசிங்கர் நம்மாழ்வார் சன்னதியிலேயே இரவு முழுதும் தங்கி இருந்து திருவாய்மொழி சாற்றியவருடன் உசாவி இருந்தார்.   மறுநாள்  அவருடனேயே திருமஞ்சனம்  கண்டருளி அருளிச்செயல் இசைக்கப்பெற்று, சாயங்காலம் 4 மணி அளவில் கருடசேவை புறப்பாட்டிலே உடன் செல்லும் பிரபாவம்.  திருவல்லிக்கேணியில் அப்படி ஒரு திவ்யசேவை.    

Of the Nava Thirupathi divyadesams, ThirukKurugoor is hailed as “AzhwarThirunagari”-  as this is the Avatharasthalam of  Swami Nammalwar.   Madura Kavigal saw the leading light from Thiru Ayodhya, travelled all the way to Kurugoor, identified  Nammazhwar in the Puliyamaram [tamarind tree].  Mathurakavigal was so attached to Nammazhwaar that he sang only in praise of Nammazhwaar and considered his duty to spend life devoted to Nammazhwaar. 

 

நவதிருப்பதிகளில் ஒன்றான ஆழ்வார் திருநகரி ஆதிநாதர் ஆழ்வார் கோயிலில் உள்ள "உறங்கா' புளிய மரம் பூக்கும், காய்க்கும் ஆனால் பழுக்காது.  இன்றும் கோவில் உள்ளே இந்த மரத்தை சேவிக்கலாம்.   

The Greatest among Alwars preached to us – “ ஒழிவில் காலமெல்லாம் உடனாய் மன்னி ,வழுவிலா அடிமை செய்ய வேண்டும்நாம்,” – that when we do kainkaryam to Lord (to Him at Thiruvenkadam), we must do service by being with HIM throughout our life and do as a slave would serve his master.    Swami Nammazhwaar was born on the auspicious poornima day of Tamil Vaikasi month in Visakha nakshathiram at Thirukurugur, now famously known as ‘Azhwar Thirunagari’.  He was born to Kari and Udayanangai. Nammazhwaar has greatly contributed and his works are Thiruvaimozhi (1102 verses), Thiruvirutham (100), Thiruvasiriyam (7) and Periya Thiruvanthathi (87) 

வைகாசி விசாக நட்சத்திரத்தில் காரி மாறனுக்கும் உடயநங்கைக்கும்  (இவர் திருவண்பரிசரத்தில் பிறந்தவர்) - நம்மாழ்வார் அவதரித்தார். இவர் பிறந்த போது அழவே இல்லையாம்.  சடம் என்றால் காற்று.  வாயுவை முறித்ததனால் சடகோபன் என பெயர் பெற்றாராம்.  இந்த சடகோபர் ஆழ்வார் திருநகரி ஆதிநாதர் ஆழ்வார் கோயிலில் உள்ள புளிய மர பொந்தில் எந்த அசைவுகளும் இல்லாமல் வாசம் செய்தார்.  

ஆழ்வார்திருநகரி எனப்படும் திருக்குருகூர் – நவதிருப்பதிகளில் ஒன்றான அழகான திவ்யதேசம்.   நம்மாழ்வார் இத்திருத்தலத்தை 11 பாசுரங்களால் 'ஸ்ரீமன் நாராயணனையே பற்றுதல்பற்றி அறுதியிட்டு மங்களாசாசனம் செய்து உள்ளார். 

திருவாய்மொழி தனியனில்:- “திருவழுதிநாடென்றும் தென்குருகூரென்றும், மருவினிய வண்பொருநல் என்றும்,”  -  என பாண்டியநாட்டு தாமிரபரணிநதியின் பெருமையும் குருகூர் திவ்யதேசத்தின் பெருமையும் விளக்கப்படுகிறது.   இத்தலம் நம்மாழ்வார் அவதரித்த தலமானதால் “ஆழ்வார்திருநகரி”  என்றழைக்கப்படுகிறது.  திருவாய்மொழி திராவிட வேதசாகரம் என போற்றப்படுகிறது.  ஸ்ரீமன் நாராயணனின்  பரத்வத்தையும் அவனுக்கு மட்டுமே கைங்கர்யம் செய்ய  வேண்டியதையும் மிக   சிறப்பாக  அழுத்தமாக   ஆழ்வார்  நிலை  நாட்டியுள்ளார்.    இதோ இங்கே ஒரு துளி     :   

 

கொள்ளும் பயனில்லைக் குப்பை கிளர்த்தன்ன செல்வத்தை,*

வள்ளல் புகழ்ந்துநும் வாய்மை இழக்கும்   புலவீர்காள்,*

கொள்ளக் குறைவிலன் வேண்டிற்றெல்லாம் தரும் கோதில்,என்*

வள்ளல் மணிவண்ணன் தன்னைக் கவி சொல்ல வம்மினோ.

 

குப்பையைக் கிளறினாற்போல் குற்றம் குறைகளே தோற்றும்படியான செல்வமுடைய  அற்பரைக் குறித்து, வள்ளல்  என்றும்  உயர்ந்தவன் என்றும் போற்றுவதால்  நீங்கள்  பெறும் பலன் சிறிதுமில்லை. உங்கள்  வாய்மையை  இழப்பதை தவிர;  நீங்கள்  பாடுகிற துதிமொழிகளுக்கு மிகப்பொருத்தமானவன் -  பக்தர்களுக்கு வேண்டிய எல்லாவற்றையும் தந்தருள்பவனும்  எவ்வித குறைகளும் இல்லாதவன்  ஆன மிக சிறப்பான நீலமணிவண்ணனுமான மணிவண்ணன் மட்டுமே;  நம் நா அவனை மட்டுமே  எவ்வெப்பொதும் துதிபாட வேண்டும் ! 

ஆனதிருவிருத்தம் நூறு மருளினான் வாழியே !!

ஆசிரியமேழு பாட்டளித்த பிரான் வாழியே !!

ஈனமறவந்தாதி யெண்பத்தேழீந்தான் வாழியே !!

இலகு திருவாய்மொழியாயிரத்தொரு நூற்றிரண்டுரைத்தான் வாழியே !!

வானணியும்மாமாடக் குருகைமன்னன் வாழியே !!

வைகாசி விசாகத்தில் வந்துதித்தான் வாழியே !!

சேனையர் கோனவதாரஞ் செய்தவள்ளல் வாழியே !!
