Thiruthanka Sri Vedanthachar sarrumurai

                                                                            Thirukachi (Kanchipuram) is a beautiful place with so many temples.  Thiruthanka is one of the 108 Divya Desams of Sriman Narayana  situated in Kanchipuram, this temple is just ½ kms away from Ashtabuyakaram divyadesam. More  significantly, this is the birth place of Sri Vedantachar.  Today – Purattasi 11, 27.9.2020  is ‘thiruvonam nakshathiram’ in the month of Purattasi marking the birth of Sri Vedanthacharyar.   The temple is believed to have been expanded during the Medieval Cholas and Vijayanagar kings. The temple has inscriptions on its walls dating from the period of Rajaraja Chola III (1223 CE).  

இன்று  புரட்டாசி திருவோணம்.  ஸ்ரீ தூப்புல் பிள்ளை என்ற கவிதார்க்கிக சிம்மம் என்ற ஸர்வதந்திரஸ்வதந்தரர் என்ற ஸ்ரீமந்  வேதாந்தாசாரியார்  -   கிபி 1268ல் புரட்டாசி விபவ ஆண்டில்  அவதரித்தார்.  752 திருநட்சத்திரம் இன்று ! காஞ்சியில் திருத்தண்கா என்கிற திவ்யதேசம் உண்டு. 'கண்ணன் வெஃக்கா' எனப்படுகிற ஸ்ரீயதோக்தகாரி எம்பெருமான் ஸன்னிதிக்குச் சமீபத்தில் உள்ள ' தேனிளஞ்சோலையே' தண்கா (குளிர் சோலை) என்பர் பெரியோர். அதற்கருகில் இருக்கும் அக்ரஹாரத்தில்   முன்பு, உத்தமமான புரட்டாசித் திருவோண நன்னாளில் உதித்தவர் குருவான வேதாந்தாசாரியார்   எனும் வேதாந்த தேசிகன் !   

திருத்தண்கா எனும்  ‘தூப்புல்’ வேதாந்த தேசிகனின்  அவதாரஸ்தலம்.  'தூப்புல்’ தூய்மையான புல். வைதிகர்கள் உபயோகிக்கும் தர்ப்பத்தை குறிக்கும்.   உபய வேதாந்தத்துக்கும், [தமிழ், ஸம்ஸ்க்ருதம்]  என்ற இரண்டிலும் சிறந்து விளங்கியதால்  'வேதாந்தாச்சார்யர்’.  நமக்கு நல்வழி காட்டிடும் ஆசானை நாம் குரு, ஆசாரியன், தேசிகன் என்று பல பெயர்களால் குறிப்பிடுகின்றோம்.  தேசிகன் என்றால் ஆசாரியன் என்று பொருள். 

Venkatanathan was the  hamsam of  “Thirumani” (bell).  Kidambi Appular, Venkatanathan’s Maternal Uncle, took him to the “Kalakshepam”  of Guru Nadathur Ammal, one day. On seeing Vekatanathan’s “divya thejas” (brilliance), Nadathur Ammal stopped the Kalakshepam and asked the boy to come on stage. Young Venkatanathan grew up to become an astute scholar, a preacher of Srivaishnava siddhantam.  Venkatanathan travelled to Thiruvahindirapuram and did “mangalasasnam” to Lord Deivanayagan and his consort. He then went to Lord Nrusimha’s sannidhi in Oushadagiri, sat under an “Ashwattha” tree and recited the Garuda Mantram.    He also composed  Hayagreeva Sthotra, Garuda-dhandakam, Devanayaga-panchasath, Achyutha-sadakam, and many more literary gems in future.  Swami was well versed in Sanskrit, Prakritham, Tamil and was great in debate earning the title  “Kavitarkikasimham”(A lion among poets). Of his many skills, he confronted a mason in building a well which is now seen at his thirumaligai at Thiruvahindrapuram.

 

Swami Vedanthachar  lived a full and fruitful life for 102 years. In the misfortune when Islamic invaders looted Thiruvarangam, alongwith Swami Pillai Logachar, he emerged at the forefront in protecting our sampradhayam.   In the year 1369, he rested his head on the lap of his son Kumara Varadhachariar and left his mortal coil.  During his lifetime, Swami lived in Karnataka for 12 long years in a place know as Sathyagalam.  

At Thiruvallikkeni divyadesam,  there would be periya mada veethi  purappadu of Acaryar with Sri Parthasarathi Perumal.   However, due to Covid 19, there would be no purappadu today and here are some photos of Swami Vedanthachar at Thiruvallikkeni in the year 2017.

After Mar 2020, humans are living under fear.  Not a day passes without our hearing something negative – especially the count of affected.  Fear is one of the most powerful emotions. There is stress and anxiety.  With the surge in COVID cases worldwide, vaccines may be the only long term solution to control the pandemic. There are a number of vaccines being developed for COVID-19, however, only some of them are in the most crucial phase 3 clinical trials, where the vaccines are tested on thousands of people for safety and efficacy.   

Exactly one hundred years ago, in 1920, the World  wearied by the First World War and sickened by the 1918 flu pandemic desperately sought to move past the struggles and tragedies and start to rebuild lives. People were in search of a “return to normalcy,” nearly every country finds itself in a similar position.  Millions more are going to die before the pandemic is over, was a stark   message of Bill Gates, a co-founder of Microsoft and one of the world’s largest philanthropists, in an interview.  Most of these deaths, he said, would be caused not by the disease itself, but by the further strain on health-care systems and economies that were already struggling. He also lamented the politicisation of the response to the virus.    More than eight months and 900,000 deaths into the COVID-19 pandemic,  people around the world are desparately  longing for an end. The most sought after is an  epidemiological end point when herd immunity is achieved.  The other is solution in the form of vaccine.  Beyond the impatience that most feel to resume normal life, the longer it takes to remove the constraints on our economies, the greater will be the economic damage.  

Now in the present situation, Temples have opened, yet whether there would be Navarathri or Manavala Mamunigal Uthsava purappadu next month is doubtful. We pray that by the year end – things are as normal as they were and we are able to relish Emperuman adhyayana uthsavam.  

இராப்பத்து  உத்சவத்தில் நான்காம் நாள்.  வீதி புறப்பாட்டில் ஆசார்யரின் உபதேச இரத்தினமாலையும், திருக்கோவில் உள்ளே திருவாய்மொழி நான்காம் பத்தும் சேவிக்கப் பெறுகின்றன.   ஸகலஜகத்காரணபூதனான ஸர்வேச்வரன் திருநகரியிலே எளியனாய்க் காட்சி தந்தருளா நிற்க, வேறுதெய்வத்தைத் தேடி ஓடுகிறீர்களே! இது என்ன அறிவு கேடு! என்று வெறுக்கிறார் - ஸ்வாமி நம்மாழ்வார்  

There is only one by name Sri Rama, born in the lineage of Ikshwaku.  He is totally balanced, one in complete control of His words, thoughts and deeds; a man of great valour ~ a person of steadfast character and radiant countenance – Lord Sree Rama*

 

सर्वदाऽभिगतस्सद्भिः समुद्र इव सिन्धुभिः ।

आर्यस्सर्वसमश्चैव* सदैकप्रियदर्शनः ॥  

His great qualities are such that noble persons all over the World are drawn to Him like rivers finding their way to the Ocean.  He conducts himself equably all the time and he is extremely charming ! – the great Sri Rama.  

Adhyayana Uthsavam is a great time – 10 long days of Pagal pathu, followed by 10 days of Irapathu – so much of darshan of Emperuman, hearing arulicheyal.  On day 4 of the Uthsavam occurs Hanumad Jayanthi.   On all days of Irapathu purappadu , it is Swami Nammalwar and  Sri Parthasarathi. On day 4  in addition   Sri Anjaneyar too  as the day would be celebrated as  Hanuman Jayanthi, the birthday of Lord Aanjaneya.  Though Hanumath Jayanthi is celebrated on various dates at various places, at Thiruvallikkeni divyadesam, it is celebrated on chathurthasi / Pournami  and would fall on 4^th day of Irapathu Uthsavam.  

Think about Hanuman,  what strikes immediately is his unparallelled devotion for Lord Rama and his unrivalled physical strength.  Hanumar, by various names Aanjaneyar, Chiranjeevi, Vayu Puthirar, Anjani Mainthan is associated with celibary, wrestling, physical power, intense concentration, mental toughness, single minded devotion and more.  Hanumar is remembered for his spirit of ‘selfless service’; and is believed to be present wherever, whenever there is recitation of the name of Lord Rama.  Hanumath Jayanthi is celebrated in various time of year in various places.   

At Thiruvallikeni divyadesam, there is sannathi of Pavana guru  Hanumar right in front of Lord Rama and is on the way to the Moolavar Sri Venkatakrishnan sannathi.  This Aanjaneyar  has purappadu once in a year and hence rare to get his darshan on the thiruveethi and photograph him too.  Rarer still is the kulakkarai Anjaneyar.  The sannathi for siriya thiruvadi at East Tank Square St is attached to the Temple. In every purappadu, there would be sri sadagopam maryathai for Anjaneya too.  This Hanumar never comes out and hence more tougher to have a photograph, perhaps the only occasion being His balalayam for renovation when he comes to the main temple and goes back on Samprokshanam day.  

ஆழ்வார் திருநகரியென வழங்கப்படும்  திருக்குருகூர் நவதிருப்பதிகளில் ஒன்று.  ஸ்வாமி நம்மாழ்வார் அவதாரஸ்தலம்.  தல அதிபதியான ஆதிப்பிரானை அடையும்படி ஆழ்வார் நமக்கு அளிக்கும் அற்புத அறிவுரை :  

ஒன்றுந் தேவும் உலகும் உயிரும் மற்றும் யாதுமில்லா*

அன்று, நான்முகன் தன்னொடு தேவருலகோடு உயிர்படைத்தான்,*

குன்றம் போல்  மணிமாடம் நீடு திருக்குருகூரதனுள்,

நின்ற ஆதிப்பிரான்  நிற்க,  மற்றைத் தெய்வம் நாடுதிரே !!!.

 

At a period when there were none in existence – nobody  else -  any God, Devas, earthly humans, other living 0rganisms, and nothing existed – Sriman Narayana, created Brahma and with him the other Gods, Devas, Worlds, all living things.  When that supreme Lord stands as Aathippiran  at Thirukkurugur where jewelled houses rise like mountains;  is there is sense or need to think of any other God as savior ?  - asks Nammalwar.  

வானத்திலே வலம் வரும் தேவர்களும், அவர்களுக்கிருப்பிடமான உலகங்களும்.மனிதர் முதலிய உயிர் பிராணிகளும், மற்றுமுள்ள அனைத்தும், சிறிதுமில்லாத அந்த ஊழிக்காலத்திலே, நான்முகனையும், தேவர்களையும்,  உலகங்களையும், அவ்வுலகில் உள்ள உயிரினங்களையும் படைத்தவனும், வேத சாஸ்த்ரங்களில் நிலைத்திருப்பவனுமான ஆதிநாதனென்றும் எம்பெருமான், மலைபோன்ற       திருமாளிகைகள் உயர்ந்திருக்கப்பெற்ற திருகுருகூர் திருநகரியிலே காட்சிதந்து கொண்டிருக்கும் போது, வேறு  தெய்வங்களை தேடியோடும் மானிடர்களை       நினைத்து எப்படி கவலை        கொள்வது  ?  அவர்களை எப்படி திருத்துவது ?? – என  கவலை கொள்கிறார் சுவாமி நம்மாழ்வார்.

Purattasi Thirumoolam ~ Swami Manavala Maamunigal : "ஒருநாயகமாய் ஓடவுலகுடன் ஆண்டவர்' .. ..

சரித்திரம் படித்தோர் இராஜ்யங்கள்  எப்படி மன்னர்கள் கையில் மாறி மாறி இருந்துள்ளன என்பதை அறிவர்.  பேரரசுகள் சிதைந்ததும் பெருமன்னர்கள் மண்டியிட்டதும் கால வரலாறு.   உலகங்கட்கெல்லாம்  ஓரரசாக வீற்றிருந்து வாழ்ந்தவர்களுங்கூட நாளடைவிலே சரிந்து சாம்ராஜ்யம் மண்ணோடானது, காலத்தின் கட்டாயம். ஸ்ரீவைணவம் ஒரு எளிய நெறி.  நாம் வேறு ஒன்றும் செய்ய வேண்டியதில்லை. நித்ய ஸ்ரீமானான எம்பெருமானைப் பணிவதே பாங்கு என்கிறார் ஸ்வாமி நம்மாழ்வார் தமது திருவாய்மொழி தனிலே :  (4ம் பத்து - முதல் திருவாய்மொழி) :  "ஒருநாயகமாய் ஓடவுலகுடன்  ஆண்டவர்' .. .. 

இன்று (24.9.2020)   புரட்டாசி திருமூலம் - சரியாக ஒரு மாதத்தில் (ஐப்பசி திருமூலம்) நம் ஆசார்யன் ஸ்வாமி மணவாள மாமுனிகள் சாற்றுமுறை வைபவம். ஸ்ரீ வைஷ்ணவம் எனும்  ஆலமரம் தழைக்க   தோன்றினவர்  நம் ஆச்சார்யன் ஸ்வாமி  மணவாள மாமுனிகள் ~ அவரது திருவவதாரத்தால் இந்த ஐப்பசி மாசம் சிறப்புற்றது.  பூர்வாசார்யர்கள்  பரம்பரையில் நாம் கொண்டாடுவது நம் ஸ்வாமி  மணவாள மாமுனிகள். ஆதிசேஷனுடைய அவதாரமாகவும், பகவத் இராமானுசரின் அவதாரமாகவும் அவதரித்தவர் மாமுனிகள்.    

Hailed as Periya Jeeyar, Mamunigal who  established our Thennacharya Sampradhayam believed and practised the tenet of following the words of early Acharyars as they are [munnor mozhintha murai thappamal kettu].   At Thiruvallikkeni and other divyadesams, 10 day Thiruvavathara Uthsavam of our Acharyar is   celebrated grandly.    

ஸ்ரீவரவரமுனி என்று கொண்டாடப்படும் நம் ஆசார்யர்  பாழ்பட்டு கிடந்த  ஸ்ரீரங்கம்   கோயில் நிர்வாகத்தை ஏற்று  இராமானுஜர்  காலம்  போன்ற நிர்வாகத்தை ஏற்படுத்தியவர். தன்  ஆச்சாரியர் திருவாய் மொழி பிள்ளை  ஆணையின்  பேரில் ஆழ்வார் திருநகரியில் ஸ்ரீராமானுஜர் விக்ரகத்தை  நிறுவி இராமானுஜர் பற்றிய இருபது பாக்கள் கொண்ட யதிராஜ விம்சதி இயற்றியதனால் யதீந்த்ர ப்ரவணர் என போற்றப்பட்டவர்.

மாமுனிகள் தம் விசாலமான ஸத் ஸம்ப்ரதாயப் புலமையை எல்லார்க்கும் பயன்படும்படி அனைத்து சாஸ்த்ரங்களையும் சேர்த்து மிகச் சுருக்கமாக வழங்கினார், மாமுனிகளின் ஔதார்யத்தையும் மஹாவித்வத்தையும் அவரது வாழ்க்கையும், அவரது நூல்களும்,  அவர்தம் ஏற்படுத்திய நெறிமுறைகளும், தெள்ளத்தெளிவாக விளக்குகின்றன.   அவரது  ஸம்ஸ்க்ருத க்ரந்தங்கள்:  யதிராஜ விம்சதி –   எனும் இருபது ச்லோகங்கள் கொண்ட இந்த ஸ்தோத்ரத்தை எம்பெருமானார் விஷயமாக ;   தேவராஜ மங்களம் – அழகான மங்களாசாஸன க்ரந்தம் ஆன இதில் மாமுனிகள் காஞ்சி தேவப்பெருமாளுக்கு மங்களாசாஸனம் செய்கிறார்.   

தமிழ் ப்ரபந்தங்கள்:  உபதேச ரத்தின மாலை – பிள்ளை லோகாசார்யர் மாஹாத்ம்யமும் ஸ்ரீவசன பூஷண மாஹாத்ம்யமும் காட்ட என்றே முக்யமாக எழுந்த இக்ரந்தத்தில் மாமுனிகள் மிக ஆச்சர்யமாக ஆழ்வார்கள்/ஆசார்யர்கள் அவதரித்த நாள்கள்/மாதங்கள்/ஸ்தலங்கள் இவற்றை விவரித்து, எம்பெருமானார்க்கு ஸம்ப்ரதாயத்திலுள்ள விசேஷஸ்தானமும், வ்யாக்யானங்கள் எல்லா அருளிச்செயல்களுக்கும் அமையவேண்டும். இவ்வழி நடப்பவர்கள் எம்பெருமானாருக்குப் பிரியமாக இருப்பர் என தளைகட்டியுள்ளார்.   ஆர்த்தி ப்ரபந்தம் – மாமுனிகளின் எம்பெருமானார் பக்கலுள்ள பரமபக்தியின் தூய வெளிப்பாடு இது. அவரின் சரம காலத்தில் எழுதப்பட்டது.  ஜீயர் படி திருவாராதனம் – எளிய முறையில் பகவதாராதனம் செய்யும் முறையை மாமுனிகள் இதில் காட்டியருளுகிறார்.

 திருவாய்மொழி நூற்றந்தாதி –  தேன் போன்று இனிமையானது.   ஸ்வாமி  நம்மாழ்வாரின் திராவிட வேத சாகரமான திருவாய்மொழி.  100 பதிகங்கள் கொண்டது.  இதில் உள்ள ஒவ்வொரு பதிகத்துக்கும் ஒரு வெண்பா என 100 வெண்பாக்கள் மணவாள மாமுனிகள் திருவாய்மொழி  நூற்றந்தாதியில் நமக்கு அருளிச்செய்துள்ளார். ஆழ்வாரின் ஒவ்வொரு பதினோரு பாசுரமான ஒரு திருவாய்மொழிக்கு அப்பாசுரங்கள் அனைத்தையும் ஒரே வெண்பாவில் அதாவது பதினைந்து சொற்களில் மாமுனிகள் ஆக்கிவைத்தது உலக இலக்கிய அதிசயம்.ஒவ்வொரு பதிகத்திலுமுள்ள தொடக்கச் சொல்லை அப்பதிக வெண்பாவின் முதற்சொல்லாகவும், பதிகத்தின் இறுதிப் பாடலிலுள்ள இறுதிச் சொல்லை வெண்பாவின் ஈற்றுச் சொல்லாகவும் அமைத்து வெண்பா வரும்படி அமைத்து நூற்றந்தாதி,  நம்மாழ்வாரின் புகழைப் பாடுகிறது. 

முதலில் கண்ட - "ஒருநாயகமாய் ஓடவுலகுடன்  ஆண்டவர்' .. ..பதிகத்திற்கான திருவாய்மொழி நூற்றந்தாதி பாசுரம் இங்கே :

ஒரு  நாயகமாய் உலகுக்கு, வானோர்

இருநாட்டில் ஏறியுய்க்கும் இன்பம் – திரமாகா,

மன்னுயிர்ப்  போகந்தீது   மாலடிமையே  இனிதாம்,

பன்னியிவை மாறனுரைப் பால். 

இவ்வுலக இன்பங்களும் ,  அதே போல், சுவர்க்க இன்பங்களும் (வானோர் இரு நாட்டில் ஏறி உய்க்கும் இன்பம்) ஸ்திரமாகா -நிலைத்திருப்பவை  அல்ல.  ஸ்திரமாக என்றென்றும் நிலைத்திருப்பவை,  மன்னு  இருக்ககூடிய ஆத்மாவை அனுபவிக்கும் உயிர் போகம் தான். எம்பெருமான் ஸ்ரீமன்நாரணனுக்கு  அடிமை செய்வதே (மாலடிமையே) இனிமையானது என  இவைகளை (இவை) விளக்கி மாறன் நம்மாழ்வார் உரைப்பது இந்த திருவாய்மொழி.

பொன்னிவர் மேனி மரகதத்தின்' ~ Golden Thirumeni of Emperuman

எம்பெருமானது திருமேனி வடிவழகை அழகிய பளபளக்கும் பைம் பொன்னோடு ஒப்பிடுதல் வழக்கம்.  திவ்விய தேசமான நாகையில் எழுந்தருளி உள்ள சௌந்தரராஜ பெருமாள், வர்ணிக்க முடியாத பேரழகுடன் திகழ்பவர்!’ என்று சிலாகிக்கிறார் திருமங்கை ஆழ்வார்.   'பொன்னிவர் மேனி மரகதத்தின்' என்று ஒரு பாசுரம் திருமொழியில். 

तं सन्तः श्रोतुमर्हन्ति सदसद्व्यक्तिहेतवः।

हेम्नः संलक्ष्यते ह्यग्नौ विशुद्धिः श्यामिकाऽपि वा॥

~ a sloga from Ragu Vamsam [tam santaH shrotum arhanti sat asat vyakti hetavaH hemnaH sa.mlakshyate hi agnau vishuddhiH shyAmikA api vA ||]

Sagacious people who are the resolvers in clarifying merit and demerit are apt to listen this, as fire indeed can distinguish whether the gold is pure or impure.

கொரோனா தீ நுண்மி மக்களையும் அவர்களது வாழ்க்கை முறையையும் பாதித்துள்ளது எனினும், வீட்டடங்கு உத்தரவு சற்று தளர்ந்தவுடன், மக்கள் கடைகளில் கூட்டம் கூட ஆரம்பித்துவிட்டனர். காய்கறி, பால், மளிகை கடைகள் அல்ல - தங்கம், துணிமணி கடைகள் !! 

எக்காலத்திலும் மக்களை கவர்ந்து இழுப்பது 'தங்கம்' - பொன்னாலான ஆபரணங்கள். கோவிட் 19 பாதிப்பில் மக்களிடையே பணப்புழக்கம் இல்லை என புலம்புவர்கள் ஒரு பக்கம் இருக்க, தங்கம் விலை கிடுகிடுவென உயர்ந்து வருகிறது.  கடந்த 2016 பிப்ரவரி மாத காலத்தில் தங்கம் ஒரு வரலாற்று உச்சத்தைத் தொட்டது. 24 கேரட் 10 கிராம் ஆபரணத் தங்கம் விலை 28,149-க்கு விற்பனை ஆனது. ஆனால் இந்த வரலாறு என்பது அடிக்கடி மாறும் நிகழ்வு !!     மார்ச் 2020 மாத தொடக்கத்தில், உலக சுகாதார அமைப்பு, கொரோனா வைரஸை, Pandemic (பெரும் தொற்று நோய்) என அறிவித்தது. இதன் பிறகு  தங்கம் விலை இன்னமும் உயர்ந்து  04032020  அன்று 24 கேரட் 10 கிராம் தங்கம் விலை 45,310 ரூபாயைத் தொட்டது.   இன்றைய நிலவரப்படி,  சென்னையில் 22 கேரட் ஆபரணத் தங்கத்தின் விலை   குறைந்து ரூ.39,040 க்கும்  24 கேரட் ரூ 42,584க்கும் விற்கப்படுகின்றன.

This symbol is a tribute to the Latin word, aurum, loosely translated "glowing dawn" which was used to describe gold in Ancient Rome.  Gold (Au), chemical element, a dense lustrous yellow precious metal   has several qualities that have made it exceptionally valuable throughout history.  Or is it simply a perception that has taken to the top !!   It is attractive in colour and brightness, durable to the point of virtual indestructibility, highly malleable, and usually found in nature in a comparatively pure form.    People tend to store in quantities more than what one would require; buy more of it, keep in lockers ..   [not for ordinary mortals, who only read Gold rate and say, it is going up, up and up]   

The purity of gold is defined either in karats or fineness. A karat is 1/24 part of pure gold by weight, so 24-karat gold is pure gold. To find the percentage of gold in an object when the purity is stated in karats, multiply the number of karats by 100 and divide by 24.    Alloys are mixtures of two or more metals, and many metals form alloys with gold. Most gold alloys are mixtures of gold, copper and silver. Gold alloyed with copper takes on a reddish color and is commonly 18K or less. If some of the copper is replaced with silver (keeping the gold content constant), the alloy takes on a yellow green hue or a rose color, depending on the mixture of copper and silver.

Refining with flame is one of the oldest methods of refining metals.  In ancient times, this form of refining involved a craftsman sitting next to a hot fire with molten gold in a crucible being stirred and skimmed to remove the impurities or dross that rose to the top of the molten metal. With flames reaching temperatures in excess of 1000 degrees Celsius, this job was definitely a dangerous occupation for the gold refiner.

Raghuvamsha is a Sanskrit mahakavya (epic poem) by the most celebrated Sanskrit poet Kalidasa. It narrates, in 19 sargas (cantos), the history of  the Raghu dynasty, namely the family of Dilipa and his descendants up to Agnivarna, who include Raghu, Dasharatha and Rama. The earliest surviving commentary written on the work is that of the 10th-century Kashmiri scholar Vallabhadeva.  The most popular and widely available commentary, however, is the Sanjivani, written by Mallinatha (ca.1350-1450).

The warrior Raghu leads a military expedition to Transoxiana. He defeats and subjugates local people along the way (presumably on his march through Central Asia) until he reaches the Vakshu, as the ancient Indians called the Oxus River. There, Raghu's army battles the Hepthalites, or White Huns, and defeats them. After crossing the Oxus, Emperor Raghu and his army encountered the Kambojas, and won them over too.  Canto 9 – is of  Dasharatha, and the accidental death of Shravana Kumara and in the following cantos comes the ithihasa purana Ramayana.
