Jai Sri Badrinath ! ~

The story of Yayati  is mentioned in Bhagavata Puranam as also in Maha Baratham. Yayati,  the son of king Nahusha,  one of ancestors of Pandavas. He ruled over this place.  It is here that the most important rivers of the Nation ~ the Ganges and Yamuna originate. It has the religiously most significant places of Badrinath and Kedarnath.   It is Uttarakhand known  "Land of the Gods" due to the many holy Hindu temples and pilgrimage centres.   This became a State in Nov 1999. The state is divided into two divisions, Garhwal and Kumaon, with a total of 13 districts. The provisional capital of Uttarakhand is Dehradun, the largest city in the region, which is a railhead.  These places were affected so badly due to flash floods and cloud bursts in 2012.  With pilgrims and tourists stranded in flash floods in Uttarakahand, Govts  rushed teams to the hill state to help bring back the affected persons and also announced aid. Good administration by the Central & State ensured that the holy places  recovered so well now.

It perhaps is the ultimate dream of a Srivaishnavaite – darshan at the most holy Sri Badrinath.  It is not easy even in the modern World.  As we travelled, the bus would stop – one would find hundreds of vehicle in a line  (mostly disciplined !) – the gorges on the mountain would offer a very pleasant at the same time a fearsome view !  One could see river flowing all the way – yet the vehicle passing on a ridge could evoke fear.  At many cross-points only one vehicle can go – so vehicles would stop for an hour or so. Then traffic would flow from one side – then from the waiting side.  One could see bolsters falling down; they might fall on the vehicles, at times they would close the road.  Army and Govt agencies would work effectively clearing the debris – everyone will have to wait.  .. .. and if it were to rain, the work could be hampered, vehicles would have to remain as they are – at times they would return back to the nearest city and continue the next day.

The fortunate ones cross this difficult terrain and chilly weather – reach the abode of God, have great darshan.  When we started back and 45 mins travelling hit road block, falling rocks – had to wait for an hour or so – it became too cloudy and had to abandon the return journey. Returned back to the holy Badrinath – the evening looked like night – the cold was not bearable – that offered another opportunity for worshipping at the temple !

Jai Bolo Badrinath.

Of the many divyadesams – Thiruvathari and Salagrammam present difficulties primarily due to their locations. The object in life is to do kainkaryam, have darshan of our Emperuman at various divyadesam and as ordained by Thirumangaimannan – one should travel to Badrinath in their prime of youth, when they are healthy.  Here is a small video showing the travel route :

On the way to ‘Jai bolo Badrinath’ is the beautiful Devaprayag.  A mystic place where the holy rivers Bhagirathi and Alaknanda meet, merge into one and take the name ‘Ganga’. Lord Rama  and his father Emperor  Dasharatha did penance here. The main temple of here is ‘Raghunath Temple’, dedicated to Lord Rama. (Purushothama).  The good city of Khandam stands on the banks of the Ganga which has the power to wash away in a trice the Karmas collected over seven lives.  Before entering the temple, one can have bath at the holy ghat at the confluence of Alakananda and Bagirathi. Devaprayagai is divyadesam ‘Kandam enum Kadinagar’ and next is ‘Thirupiruthi, Thirupriti – Thiru pireethi’ – aka Joshimut.  Joshimath, also known as Jyotirmath, is a city and a municipal board in Chamoli District in  the  state of Uttarakhand.   It is home to one of the four cardinal pīthas established by Adi Shankara.

Joshimath is nestled in the Himalayas at a height of 6150 feet above sea level, enroute to Badrinath from Rishikesh.  Joshimath is considered to be a center of great significance for pilgrims traveling in the Garhwal region of Uttarpradesh. There are temples to Narasimha and Vasudeva, built by Adi Sankaracharya here.  Joshimath, is the first mutt established by Shri Adi Sankara, and is located at a distance of 14 kms from Helang enroute to Badri 6150 feet above sea level. Adi Sankara authored Sri Sankara Bhashyam here.  On the way one crosses Sri Nagar, which is a relatively bigger city with facilities.

In olden days of  yore, worshipped by celestials, our Emperuman Sriman Narayana came as a boar and lifted the Earth. Our Lord as Sree Rama  wielded his bow and felled the mighty asura Ravana. Sriman Naranan  is my master. Devas  bring freshly culled Kalpaka flowers from nectared groves wafting with divine fragrance, and worship Him on the banks of the Ganga, in Vadari-Ashrama, the celestial Lord of Sri Badrinath.

Overcoming all the difficulty – endowed with devotion and happiness one enters the abode of Lord Badri Narayan – “Badrinath temple” – part of chardham and most importantly a great Srivaishnava Divyadesam.  The Emperuman here is Sri Badrinath, the temple is open for six months every year (between the end of April and the beginning of November), because of extreme weather conditions in the Himalayan region. The temple is located in Garhwal hill tracks in Chamoli district along the banks of Alaknanda River at an elevation of 3,133 m (10,279 ft) above the mean sea level.

The holy River Ganga had granted Bhagiratha’s request to relieve the people of the earthly realm from all its sufferings and sins. However, if  the river Ganga descended from heaven as one, the entire earth would succumb and be destroyed under its weight.   Lord Shiva had to contain the river inside his matted hair and divided the river in two while acting as a medium to direct the river into the earthly realm. Finally the massive river was divided into twelve holy parts, one of them being Alaknanda that currently flows by the Badrinath dham.

Sitting majestically amidst the lush greenery of the Garhwal Himalayan region of Chamoli district this iconic temple is located at an elevation of 3,133 metres above sea level. With a glorious backdrop of the mighty Nar and Narayan Parbat, the temple structure is of a traditional Indian fashion, consisting of a Garbhagriha which is almost 49 metres tall and brightly colored along with a small cupola on top of it and complete with a golden Gilded Roof. The entire structure is built out of strong mountain stones and consists of arched windows. The main entrance  in the form of a tall and arched gateway is reached via a broad, platform – like stair.  The  walls of the temple are covered in intricate and fragile engravings and carvings from inside out.

The name of the Badarinath tirtha originates from local word Badari which is a type of a wild berry. When Sriman Narayana  sat in penance in these mountains,   Goddess Laxmi took the form of a berry tree and shaded Him from the harsh sun. It is not only the dwelling place of Lord Vishnu Himself but also home to countless pilgrims, saints and sages, who meditate here in search of enlightenment. Badarinath often called as Badari Vishal, was re-established by Adi Shri Shankaracharaya to revieve the lost prestige of Hinduism and to unite nation in one bond.  It is here that  Pandavas along with Draupadi, went on their last  pilgrimage ascending the slopes of a peak near Badarinath called Swargarohini or the 'Ascent to Heaven'.  According to Vamana Purana, the sages Nara and Narayana 'fifth avatar of Lord Vishnu' performed penance here. Great sages of yore like Kapila Muni, Gautam, Kashyap have performed penance here, Bhakta Narada attained salvation and Lord Krishna loved this region.  Our Great Acarya Swami Ramanujar,  Adi Shankara,  Sri Madhavacharya,  all visited this place and performed pooja.

Two mountains were formed as  Ganga, and  Alakananda, flowed out.  Sriman  Narayana, as Acharya, is on one side and  Nara, as disciple, is on the other side!  The Lord demonstrated to people at large, how a disciple should be to learn.   The Lord presented them with an actual demonstration of a disciple!  Centuries later,  Sri Nara and Sri Narayana, were  born as Arjuna and Sri Krishna!

The main entrance gate of Badarinath temple is colourful and imposing popularly known as Singhdwar. The temple is approximately 50 feet tall with a small cupola on top, covered with a gold gilt roof. The Badarinath temple consists of  Garbha Griha (sanctum sanctorum);  Darshan Mandap and the  Sabha Mandap.   At the Badarinath Mandir Gate, directly opposite the main Idol of Lord, is seated idol of Periya Thiruvadi (Garuda) with folded hands.

The Garbha Griha has its canopy covered with a sheet of gold and houses Lord Badari Narayan, Kubera (God of wealth), Narada  rishi, Udhava, Nara and Narayan. The complex has 15 idols. The most majestic is the mool moorthy   a black stone salagrama  image of Lord Badarinarayan.  From  a cave near the Tapt Kund hot springs, the King of Garhwal moved the murti to the present loction of the temple, centuries ago.  Emperuman is seated in Padmasan.  Lord Badari Narayan has  Conch and Chakra in two arms in a lifted posture and two arms rested in Yogic Pose. Badarinarayan is seen under the Badari tree, flanked by Kuber and Garuda, Narada, Narayan and Nar; on His right  is Uddhava.   Narada Muni is kneeling in front on the right side and is difficult to see.   Surya and Chandra are also seen.

Mata Murti Ka Mela, which commemorates the descent of river Ganges on mother earth, is the most prominent festival celebrated in the Badrinath Temple. Although Badrinath is located in North India, the head priest, or Rawal, is traditionally a Nambudiri Brahmin from  Kerala.  The Nar Parbat mountain is located opposite to the temple, while the Narayana Parbat is located behind the Neelkanth peak.

Before entering the Holy temple one can have bath in ‘Tapti kund’ – in the chilly region where temperature could drop to minus degrees too, the Tapt Kund, is  a group of hot sulphur springs.     The springs have a year-round temperature of 55 °C (131 °F), while outside temperature is typically below 17 °C (63 °F) all year round.  The two water ponds in the temple are called Narad Kund and Surya Kund.  The daily rituals at the Badrivishal temple start very early, around 4.30 am with maha abhishek and abhishek puja, and end at around 8.30 -9 pm with the sayana  aarti. The temple is managed by the Shri Badrinath Mandir Samiti, constituted in 1939 by the Badrinath Temple Act 16, 1939.

The closure of the Badrinath shrine marks the end of the Char Dham Yatra season. However, the devotees can pay respect to the presiding gods of these temples at various locations where they are worshipped during the winter months.  Sri Badrinath moorthi is brought down to Joshimath during the winter days, generally commencing from Deepavali and mid-May the procession back to Badrinath occurs.

On 4.10.2019,  we had the fortune of worshipping at this holy place Badrinath  – with rendering of Thirupallandu, Thiruppavai,  and Thirumozhi  pasurams on the divyadesam

Thiruvallikkeni Irapathu 3 2010 now !!

                                         Thiruvallikkeni - Iraapathu Uthsavam 3  -  2010

In March 2020,  when the first case was identified in Kanchipuram and later when our Prime Minister announced one day token lockdown, things were not viewed in proper perspective – concepts of remaining at home, social distancing were not understood.  Not after 5 months of lockdown too, the educated masses of Metropolis are still at large, walking on the roads without masks and found at many places ! Sad !!   Tamil Nadu on Wednesday reported 5,795 fresh Covid-19 cases taking the overall state tally to 3,55,449. In Chennai, 1,186 cases were reported that pushed the city’s overall tally to 12,256.  – there were few days in between, when the tally of the city was less than 1000 and there were talks that City has flattened the curve – now for the past couple of days and more it is closer to 1200 !  .. .. what is not getting highlighted is the fact that on Wednesday, as many as 6,384 persons were discharged, taking the number of recovered patients to 2,96,171. There are currently 53,155 active cases in the state.

Meanwhile, the national capital recorded 1,398 new coronavirus cases on Wednesday, taking the total count to 1,56,139. With nine more deaths, the toll also increased to 4,235. On Monday, the Delhi High Court expressed concern over the fact that Covid cases are still hovering around the 1,300 mark, “which shows that there must be a concentrated focus on ramping up lab testing in Delhi”.

US President Donald Trump said he called off last weekend’s trade talks with China and that Beijing’s handling of the coronavirus is “unthinkable”. “I cancelled talks with China,” Trump said Tuesday in Yuma, Arizona. “I don’t want to talk to China right now.”  Trump has been stepping up complaints about China, particularly over the spread of the coronavirus, which he regularly calls the “China virus”. “What China did to the world was unthinkable,” Trump said, but WHO earlier certified China as having taken good measures in preventing the spread and ensured in naming it as ‘Covid 19’ without any trace to its origin city or Country !!

Though the whole World is suffering, China tries to showcase as if things are normal over there.  It is reported that the  Chinese capital Beijing is taking another step back to normality, allowing residents to go mask-free outdoors. Under new municipal disease control and prevention guidelines released on Thursday, people do not need to wear a mask outside if they are only with “companions”.  China claims to have largely brought the pandemic  under control, fighting sporadic outbreaks with mass testing and contact tracing. A Chinese state-owned pharmaceutical giant with two experimental  Covid-19  vaccines in development has priced its doses much higher than its international competitors.  The Chairman of China National Pharmaceutical Group, or Sinopharm  was quoted by Shanghai-based Guangming Daily on Tuesday as saying that the price for a two-dose regimen of its inactivated vaccines would cost around 1,000 yuan (US$145) and would be available in December.

For us though things appear normal and people are out there on roads, Temples have remained closed and there have been no purappadu since 20.3.2020 – we reminisce the earlier good happenings and am posting some photos of yesteryears.

The festivity of Adhyayana Uthsavam is enthralling and today  WE reminisce day 3 of Irapathu Uthsavam of 2010.  During Irapathu, everyday   at around 0545 pm,  Sri Parthasarathi Perumal reaches the Paramapada vasal, where Nammalwar waits for the doors to open and have darshan of Lord coming through the entrance. Devotees throng to have darshan of this significant  event.

In the  mada veedhi, ‘Upadesa Rathinamalai’  of Acharyar Swami Manavala Maamunigal is recited by arulicheyal  goshti.  Upadesa Rathimalai is a legend, a lexicon, a masterpiece of Swami Manavala Maamunigal.   It focusses on the glory of our reverred Azhwargal, Poorvacharyaas and because of whom Sri Vaishnava sampradhayam has flourished over the years.  The literary masterly work Upadesa Rathinamalai, details the months, Thirunakshathiram, Sthalam  of birth [month, day and place of birth] of Alwars and extols their greatness.  Upadesa Rathinamalai is replete with reference to the commentaries of Poorvacharyars; it also extols the greatness  of Sri Pillai Logachariyar [Pillai Ulagariyar] and the sublime commentary of his Rahasya Grantham “Sri Vachana Bushanam” [seer vasana booshanam – in the words of Mamunigal]

In praising the Azhwar, Mamunigal says :

Our peerless Acharyar says : May the Divine Azhwargal live long ! May those Acharyars who have no downside in any manner live long ! May their works ~ Divya Prabandhams; accurate commentaries all of which were made only for the welfare and well-being of the Seven Worlds live long alongside the greatest of Pramanams – the Vedas.

On day 3  evening  Sri Parthasarathy in his radiant splendour had periya maada veethi purappadu with Nammalwar.   Back in the temple, there was  the rendering of 3rdCentum  [moonram pathu]  of Thiruvaimozhi, which concludes with the hymn :

Those who recite and render these 10 songs among the thousand made by Kurugur Sadagopan [Swami Nammazhwar]  extolling the ever remaining Kesavan of undiminished fame,   will be blessed with all riches,  including the ultimate Salvation also.  The  extolled Thiruvaimozhi comprises 1102 verses, grouped in ten parts called  centums referred to as mudal patthu, irandam patthu & the like.  Each centum has ‘decads’ – pathikams known as mudal patthu mudal thiruvaimozhi,  irandam patthu – naankam thiruvaimozhi etc.

Here are some photos of Sri Parthasarathi Perumal & Swami Nammalwar on the occasion of Irapathu uthsavam day 3 on 19.12.2010 taken with Canon powershot A1100IS
